Chapter 48: Keeping A Beloved In A Golden House
The girl in front of her was Mister Pei’s previous marriage alliance partner, Miss Jenny.
Meng Shuyou spoke up to greet them, “Hello, I’m Madam Kasa’s assistant Elara, please come inside.”
Jenny obviously remembered her too, “Aren’t you Mister Ellen’s friend? We meet again.”
Meng Shuyou smiled politely, “I’m actually not close to Mister Ellen.”
Just hearing Ellen’s name again was almost giving her psychological trauma; Mister Pei was too terrifying when he got angry.
Jenny was unsure if the girl she saw talking to Mister Kerwin that night at the club doorway was her.
Meng Shuyou poured two cups of water and gave them to each of them, “What type of paintings are you two looking to see today?”
The other girl Ivy said: “Birthday gifts suitable for female elders, any recommendations?”
“Yes, please follow me.” Meng Shuyou led them to the display case and introduced: “This piece ‘Blooming’ is Madam Kasa’s work from two years ago. The painting features many flowers of different seasons and varieties combined into an ideal bouquet, just like women, who have unique charm at any age, blooming passionately.”
“It’s indeed nice.” Ivy admired it while asking: “Jenny, what do you think?”
“Mm.” Jenny looked to the other side, “This piece ‘Gaze’ is also very good.”
Meng Shuyou added, “That painting tells the story of a blind madam who devoted her life to accompanying a group of abandoned children in an orphanage. Though she couldn’t see, her gaze always had warmth, hoping this warmth could be passed on forever.”
Jenny could tell she was very knowledgeable about the artwork, and her explanation was spot on.
Afterward, they looked at quite a few more paintings, picking and choosing, and ultimately decided on the first one, ‘Blooming’.
188,000 US dollars, signed on site, paid by card.
Meng Shuyou carefully took out the painting, packaged it securely inside and out in three layers to avoid damage.
Jenny still voiced her doubt, “Do you know Mister Kerwin?”
Meng Shuyou said frankly, “Mm, I know him.”
Jenny hesitated to speak, unsure if she should continue asking, after all, it was her private matters.
Ivy nearby chimed in, “You know Mister Kerwin too? Has he bought artwork from you here?”
“Mm.” Meng Shuyou just wanted to brush it off; just then her mobile phone rang, and she used it to excuse herself, “Sorry, I need to take this telephone call.”
Jenny and Ivy left the art gallery, waiting at the doorway for the driver to arrive.
Ivy asked: “Jenny, are you and Mister Kerwin really going to have a marriage alliance?”
Jenny lowered her eyelids, “He has no intention of a marriage alliance.”
Ivy didn’t understand, “What is he thinking? You two are a perfect match in every way; who could be more suitable than you?”
Jenny didn’t want to give up.
Admiring Kerwin was one thing, but more importantly, she valued his strength. She wanted to gain a foothold in the group, climb to a higher position, and replace her brother, so she needed a man like Kerwin to help her seize power.
Unfortunately, his heart seemed impossible for anyone to win.
–
Though living under the same roof, Meng Shuyou hadn’t seen Pei Yuzhou for the past few days.
He went to the company very early in the morning and didn’t return until after ten at night; their times just missed each other.
On her day off, Meng Shuyou slept in until nine-thirty, then went downstairs for breakfast.
Unexpectedly, Mister Pei was home today, and Mister Zhao was there too.
Seeing Meng Shuyou come down from upstairs, Zhao Hesong was extremely surprised, “Brother Zhou, you’ve got a hidden beauty at home? You’re living together this quickly?”
Pei Yuzhou lifted his eyes to glance at him, his voice as lazily casual as ever, “You got a problem with that?”
Zhao Hesong shook his head, “I don’t have a problem; what problem could I have?”
Meng Shuyou greeted him somewhat embarrassedly, “Mister Zhao.”
Zhao Hesong claimed merit, “You two being together, is that thanks to me?”
Pei Yuzhou’s gaze was indifferent, “You mean giving out my address without my permission?”
Zhao Hesong coughed lightly, “That’s not important; what’s important is you’ve now got the beauty. This is what they call doing a favor for others. Right, Miss Meng?”
Meng Shuyou couldn’t respond to that.
“I think I should go be the Matchmaker.” Zhao Hesong touched his chin, “But the Matchmaker is from China; he probably can’t manage the marriage fate of half an American like you.”
Pei Yuzhou issued an eviction order, “If nothing’s up, you can leave.”
“Weren’t we going to play golf?” Zhao Hesong had just learned a few moves and didn’t believe he’d lose to him every time, “Miss Meng, want to come play with us?”
Meng Shuyou really wanted to go out to gather some inspiration, “Will it be a bother?”
Zhao Hesong grinned, “Of course not, it’ll be fun.”
–
Suburbs, golf club.
Overcast day, mild light, perfect for outdoor sports.
A vast expanse of green turf stretched out, with putting greens, lakes, and sand traps stretching continuously, undulating terrain, fresh air.
Meng Shuyou didn’t like playing golf, but she liked the environment of the golf course; it was very relaxing.
She just watched from the sidelines as the two men played and discussed projects.
What entertainment; it had turned into business again.
One par-five hole; Zhao Hesong hit an eagle, three strokes into the hole, exceptional performance, thinking victory was in hand, but Pei Yuzhou hit an albatross, one stroke better than him.
Zhao Hesong lost miserably again, “Playing with you is no fun.”
Pei Yuzhou replied coolly, “That’s what I should be saying.”
“…”
Too insulting.
Zhao Hesong turned his gaze aside, “Miss Meng, do you play golf?”
Meng Shuyou sipped her cup of juice slowly, “I haven’t played in a long time.”
“No problem, since you’re here, give it a try.” Zhao Hesong handed her a golf club.
“Alright.” Meng Shuyou gave her cup to the caddie.
Not far behind, an electric golf cart drove by.
Ivy sat in the car taking photos; her lens swept over the putting green and caught a familiar figure, “Jenny, look, isn’t that Mister Kerwin?”
Jenny looked up and gazed in the direction she pointed.
In her view, the man’s figure was tall and straight, dressed in black-and-white casual clothes, shedding his usual oppressive aura for a touch more refined gentleness.
And beside him was a back view of a girl in a pink sun protection jacket and baseball cap.
The girl looked up saying something to him; he leaned down slightly to listen, showing no impatience.
As she spoke, the wind blew off the girl’s hat; the man bent down to pick it up and put it back on her head.
Ivy couldn’t see the front face, “Who’s that girl? Why is she so close to Mister Kerwin?”
Jenny clenched her palm.
So this was Mister Kerwin’s reason for refusing her.
She’d never seen this side of him; turns out he could be so attentive and considerate too.
Meng Shuyou hadn’t played golf in a long time, her feel rusty, but luckily her luck was good. She asked Mister Pei for some tips and sank it in regulation strokes.
Zhao Hesong finally won a hole and was satisfied, “Miss Meng, next time I should play golf with you; playing with someone has no thrill.”
Meng Shuyou returned the golf club to the caddie and smiled faintly, “I don’t like playing golf; maybe you can play with Winnie, she likes it.”
Zhao Hesong chuckled lightly, “Then I’d have to go back to China to find her.”
