Chapter 35:
Chicago, 7 p.m.
Night had fallen, streetlights dim.
Since the holiday began, the school had been deserted and unusually quiet.
Meng Shuyou had eaten dinner outside and returned to the dormitory early.
The luggage hadn’t been packed yet.
She pulled out the dusty suitcase from the corner, wiped it clean with a cloth, and first packed away some clothes, bags, and shoes.
While organizing the wardrobe, she noticed that expensive suit jacket still hanging in the corner.
Besides that man, no one could wear a suit with such presence—ascetic, steady, noble, yet so nonchalant.
The owner of the jacket had long forgotten about this piece of clothing.
It was too expensive; throwing it away would be a waste.
Meng Shuyou thought that when she was short of money, she could perhaps sell it at a second-hand luxury store.
The mobile phone on the table rang.
She put down the clothes in her hand and saw it was Aunt Xue’s call, so she quickly answered, “Aunt Xue, what’s wrong? Is something happening with Older Sister?”
Aunt Xue’s voice was somewhat heavy, “Sorry, Yaoyao, I’m only telling you now. Xiao Man fell yesterday and hit the back of her head; she’s been unconscious.”
Meng Shuyou’s chest tightened, “How could this happen?”
Aunt Xue was full of guilt, “This is my fault. That day at noon, I had an emergency at home. I saw Xiao Man taking a nap, so I left for an hour. Who knew that Miss Meng came later, took Xiao Man out, and I don’t know what happened—Xiao Man got injured.”
She had checked the surveillance at the elevator entrance and confirmed that Meng Yan had come and it was she who took Shu Man out.
Meng Shuyou’s left hand braced on the desk, her knuckles turning white.
Meng Yan, what exactly was she trying to do.
“I’m worried about Xiao Man now…”
Aunt Xue hadn’t finished speaking when she was suddenly interrupted.
“Aunt Xue, who are you talking to on the phone?”
Meng Yan walked straight toward her.
Aunt Xue paused, “I…”
The next moment, the mobile phone was snatched away.
Meng Yan glanced at the screen and slowly said: “Meng Shuyou.”
“Meng Yan, what did you do to my Older Sister?”
“I didn’t do anything; she fell on her own by accident. Who can she blame?”
Meng Shuyou gripped the mobile phone tightly, “You were the one who took her out.”
“She wanted to go out and play, so I kindly took her downstairs for a walk. Who knew she would fall just walking.” Meng Yan shifted all the blame away, “You’d better hurry back. Your Older Sister is like this now; are you really going to keep doing that internship there?”
With that, she immediately hung up the call.
“My mobile phone.” Aunt Xue wanted to take it back.
Meng Yan didn’t give it back to her, “Aunt Xue, you need to figure out who your employer is. Your salary is paid by the Meng Family. What do you mean by siding with Meng Shuyou like this?”
She even threatened, “I’m telling you, during this time, you’re not allowed to contact Meng Shuyou, or else you can forget about this job.”
The incoming call rang again.
Meng Yan directly hung up and powered off the phone.
Aunt Xue watched helplessly as she took her own mobile phone away.
On the other end, Meng Shuyou was frantic; she couldn’t get through no matter how she called.
She knew Meng Yan was using this method to force her to return to the country.
If she didn’t go back, who knew what that lunatic Meng Yan would do to Older Sister.
What should she do—return to the country and accept the engagement?
A thought suddenly flashed through her mind.
If she had to marry someone, Ellen was indeed a better choice.
This was a dead-end escape route.
Once Older Sister was involved, she couldn’t care about anything else.
Meng Shuyou opened her contacts, found Ellen’s number, and dialed it.
After more than ten seconds of ringing, the other side picked up.
“Mister Ellen, are the words you said last time still valid?”
The man chuckled softly, “Of course, I’ve been waiting for your reply, Miss Elara.”
Meng Shuyou’s voice was tense, “But I have conditions.”
Ellen said: “Let’s talk in person. I’m at King Club.”
Meng Shuyou: “Okay.”
