Chapter 6: Don’t Waste Your Efforts On Me
As soon as the words fell, the car fell silent.
Pei Yuzhou raised his eyebrows slightly, “How so?”
“If you have a girlfriend, it seems a bit inappropriate for me to get in your car.”
Although online sources said he was unmarried and single, she still wanted to confirm, lest she make a fool of herself.
Pei Yuzhou lifted his chin, “Then you can get off now.”
“…”
Such a handsome guy, why did he have to open his mouth.
Meng Shuyou was not giving up, “Do you really have a girlfriend?”
Pei Yuzhou did not answer.
Meng Shuyou thought it was default, her heart sinking halfway, all her efforts wasted.
Thinking of her own situation, her nasal cavity began to ache uncontrollably.
PUA Dad, vicious stepmother, sick older sister, and herself barely hanging on.
Was she destined to just accept her fate?
Mister Pei had a girlfriend, so what she was doing was ultimately improper.
Meng Shuyou sniffled softly, suppressing her sob, “Then have the driver stop, I’ll go back to school by myself.”
Pei Yuzhou watched as she was fine one second, and the next her eyes were red.
Her emotions changed faster than turning a page.
Mark spoke up: “Miss Meng, we can’t stop here.”
“…”
Meng Shuyou looked outside the window, they had just passed the traffic light intersection, ten minutes to school.
Coming back from the club without a word, she would definitely offend Ellen, and then how to explain to Meng Zhenhua.
Pei Yuzhou pressed his brow with his fingertip, his thin lips parting lightly, “I don’t have a girlfriend, but don’t waste your efforts on me either.”
Meng Shuyou automatically ignored the second half, hope igniting in her heart, “You don’t have a girlfriend?”
It seemed her plan still had opportunity.
Pei Yuzhou’s patience was limited, “Keep making noise and get off.”
Meng Shuyou immediately shut up, not daring to disturb him further.
Soon, the car came to a steady stop.
“Miss Meng, we’re here.” Mark pushed open the car door, held an umbrella, and went around to the back seat.
“Okay.” Meng Shuyou turned to look at the man resting with eyes closed, “Thank you, Mister Pei, I’ll be going.”
He was too lazy to even open his eyes.
Meng Shuyou didn’t know if she had annoyed him, she sighed softly, lifted her foot, and stepped out of the car.
Her ears were filled with the noise of raindrops hitting the umbrella.
Mark: “Miss Meng, take the umbrella.”
Meng Shuyou said “thank you”, paused, then asked: “Can I add your contact info? I’ll wash the coat clean and return it to Mister Pei later.”
“The mister said it’s not necessary to return.”
“But the clothes are too expensive.”
Mark’s tone was all business, “Sorry, Miss Meng, without the mister’s permission, I can’t give you the contact info.”
Meng Shuyou lowered her eyes in disappointment, “Okay.”
Back at the dormitory, most of her body was wet.
She took off the coat and hung it separately on the full-length coat rack.
Something unknown fell out of the pocket, hitting the ground with a thud.
Meng Shuyou bent down to pick it up.
A metal lighter, small and exquisite, with a compass carved on the outer wall, exquisite craftsmanship, clearly valuable.
Thinking of that man, she was at a loss.
To cling to Pei Yuzhou, she had thrown away all dignity, tried every trick, but it was still no use.
He didn’t give any opportunity at all.
Meng Shuyou was exhausted all over, took a shower and changed out of her dirty clothes, threw herself into the bedding, and emptied her mind.
Right now she just wanted to sleep well.
–
At one in the morning, the incoming call rang incessantly, accompanied by “buzzing” vibrations assaulting her eardrums.
Meng Shuyou was woken up, groggily reaching for the mobile phone on the bedside table, forcing her eyelids open to barely make out the caller ID, instantly sobering up.
She sat up on the bed and pressed to answer.
As expected, it was to come demanding accountability.
“You messed things up?” An angry voice came through the receiver.
Without waiting for Meng Shuyou’s explanation, he berated her, “Can’t even handle such a small thing, what can you do?”
Meng Zhenhua could not hide his anger, “Meng Shuyou, do you never want to see your older sister again?”
Meng Shuyou listened numbly, only stirring at the mention of ‘older sister’, a ripple in her eyes, she moved her lips, her throat slightly dry, “Sorry Dad, it wasn’t intentional, an accident happened…”
Meng Zhenhua impatiently interrupted, “I don’t care about any accident, reflect properly, next time the consequences are on you.”
The telephone call ended.
He threw down the mobile phone, face ashen with rage.
His wife came down from upstairs, approaching to soothe, “Husband, what’s worth getting so angry? Don’t ruin your health.”
Meng Zhenhua’s chest heaved, “Who else, that girl is getting more disobedient, can’t even handle a small task without screwing it up.”
He had gone to great lengths to connect with Ellen, now all for nothing, and even offended him.
“You’re talking about Yaoyao, she’s still young after all.” Lin Peilan poured him a cup of tea and handed it over, “She’ll graduate from university next year, why not find her a suitable marriage alliance partner, women will mature after marriage.”
Meng Zhenhua took a sip of tea and nodded, “You’re right.”
While still under control now, later when she grew stronger wings, she wouldn’t obey.
Lin Peilan smiled, “Don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye out for candidates for her.”
Meng Zhenhua set down the tea cup, “Good, thanks for the trouble.”
Lin Peilan said considerately: “What are you saying, Yaoyao is my daughter too, I naturally hope she does well.”
“Boom—”
Outside the window a thunderbolt struck, lightning tearing through the sky, ripping open the night.
Meng Shuyou clutched the quilt tightly, tossing and turning sleeplessly.
The day Mother left was also a thunderstorm day.
She went to buy Mother’s favorite jujube cake, got stuck in traffic on the way back to the hospital, and missed Mother’s last moments.
From then on she only had her older sister as family.
But later her older sister had an accident too, also on a stormy day.
So she disliked heavy rain, disliked the piercing thunder, it made her feel suffocated.
Sleepless all night.
Until nearly dawn when the rain stopped outside, Meng Shuyou fell asleep again.
She did not sleep soundly.
Her dreams were full of childhood events.
Before ten years old, she had always lived with Mother and older sister, she and her older sister shared the same mother but different fathers.
A small sixty-square-meter house, the three of them crowded together, very happily.
Back then she loved rainy days, deliberately wearing raincoat and rain boots to go out and get soaked in puddles, coming home with wet clothes and getting scolded by Mother, older sister always protected her.
The two sisters had been inseparable since childhood, with deep feelings.
But later everything changed.
Back at the Meng Family, she became a pitiful thing everyone could bully.
At eleven, her half-sister Meng Yan locked her in the basement storage, shut in for a night.
It happened to be a thunderstorm day, thunder roaring deafeningly, she curled up in the corner, covering her ears and trembling all over.
The next day discovered by the servant, high fever of 40 degrees, seriously ill.
It was older sister who took leave from school to take care of her at the hospital.
The scene shifted, older sister lying in a pool of blood.
“Older sister—”
Meng Shuyou jolted awake from her sleep, forehead covered in a thin layer of sweat, pupils dilated staring at the ceiling.
She had dreamed of the day older sister had her accident again.
