Chapter 3: Bird’s Nest?
Her brain was a complete mess at this time, but she finally relaxed a little.
Especially after feeling the werewolf continuously gently stroking her back with its hand, and inadvertently catching sight of the fluffy tail behind it swaying slightly.
Su Ran became even more certain of her guess.
This action was almost identical to that of the big wolf dog she raised at her grandmother’s house in the countryside, both being canine animals, so this should also be a sign of the werewolf being happy.
Su Ran secretly breathed a sigh of relief; it seemed she should still be safe for the time being.
Meanwhile, the werewolf probably sensed that she was no longer trembling and finally slowly stopped licking her face, but it still didn’t let go of the action of rubbing its cheek against her while holding her.
Su Ran felt a bit embarrassed.
Because she suddenly realized that the beastman holding her right now was still naked.
Although she didn’t feel anything she shouldn’t right now, looking at the stunningly beautiful face in front of her, she still couldn’t help but see it as a human male like herself, making the position between them feel so shameful.
However, she also got to observe the werewolf’s appearance up close.
The werewolf had the look of the currently most popular domineering puppy in Asia, with thick eyebrows and deep eyes, wide mouth and thin lips, and its wheat-colored skin making the evenly proportioned muscles on its body appear even more robust.
Its hair was light brown, with a few faint strands of white mixed in. The hair length reached only the neck, very similar to the popular wolf tail hairstyle on Earth.
Its ears were a bit larger than those of ordinary large dogs, with a color basically the same as its hair and tail. Its eyes were light green, with large black pupils that kept repeatedly contracting and dilating.
For some reason, it inexplicably reminded Su Ran of another animal.
Cats.
Or… she looked at the wings behind the werewolf and thought of another bird—owl.
A combination of owl and wolf?
Wasn’t that a bit too far-fetched?
But she couldn’t think of any animal combination more fitting for the werewolf’s physical features; even the nails on its hands, though not hooked long like those of a bird of prey, were black and shiny, clearly sharper than those of ordinary canine animals.
Su Ran’s brain had been working rapidly ever since the werewolf leaned in close; she even greatly admired herself for being able to clearly analyze the other’s situation and her own predicament in such circumstances now.
Now it seemed the werewolf hadn’t brought her back as food, so besides food, what reason would make the werewolf notice her?
Same kind? Pet? Or… thinking of the depictions in some popular human-beast novels on the internet from her original world, she felt a breath stuck in her chest.
It couldn’t be!
Although she occasionally drooled over those exceptionally valiant male characters in novels on a whim, she couldn’t actually do it!!
This was cross-species!
Thinking of this, she suddenly shivered, then tentatively tried to pull herself out of the still completely naked werewolf’s embrace.
The werewolf, sensing her movement, immediately stopped the gentle stroking and comforting action, its two thick brown eyebrows raising upward as it tilted its head and looked at her, letting out a low “wu?” from its throat.
Su Ran felt the expression on the werewolf’s face now was almost no different from that of a normal human; she could even understand it as if it were saying, “What’s wrong with you?”
Just as Su Ran didn’t know how to end this embarrassing position between one human and one beast, the werewolf holding her suddenly seemed to sense something and abruptly turned its head back!
Su Ran only felt a gust of wind brush past her ear, then saw the werewolf’s figure disappear at the bird’s nest entrance, and disappearing with it were several heads with animal ears that were backlit and whose faces couldn’t be seen clearly.
Immediately after, Su Ran heard faint sounds coming from under the bird’s nest—several whimpering animal cries like “ying ying ying” full of pleading fear, and the “thud thud” sounds of bodies colliding.
Su Ran stood in place stunned for a moment, then moved her already stiff legs and cautiously walked toward the bird’s nest entrance.
The closer she got, the brighter the light outside became, and she finally got a clear look at the bird’s nest construction materials.
They were tree branches as thick as a baby’s arm, interwoven with each other, some still bearing dry leaves. Su Ran reached out and touched the inner wall of the bird’s nest, discovering that although these branches looked messily intertwined, they were actually very tightly and firmly weaving together.
Then she walked to the entrance and cautiously poked her head out to look. The height below the bird’s nest was as she thought, a good twelve or thirteen meters. The tree supporting the bird’s nest had a grayish-white trunk that was very thick; Su Ran estimated it would take at least seven or eight people to encircle it.
And the canopy above had branches spreading very wide; this was probably why the werewolf could build such a large bird’s nest here.
Her gaze shifted to other places outside, and she found that all around were such trees, clearly not the same species as the trees growing near her previous cave.
And besides the bird’s nest she was in, there were several other bird’s nests of similar size not far away, each built on the trees like an upside-down pot.
While Su Ran was carefully surveying the surrounding environment, the thin screams from under the tree came again. Su Ran quickly looked down and, unsurprisingly, discovered there were other beastmen under the tree.
One beastman with a slender tail was being pinned to the ground and rubbed hard by the werewolf; beside the two beastmen, there were several others either standing or clinging to the tree, stretching their necks to watch them.
But what surprised Su Ran was that the other beastmen didn’t have wings.
So not all beastmen have wings?
The fight under the tree seemed to have ended with the werewolf’s victory.
It let go of the beastman pinned beneath it, then let out a long “Ao wu~ ao wu~” howl at it, and spread its wings.
Those wings didn’t look very large when folded behind the werewolf’s back, but when spread out, they were over two meters long.
Seeing the werewolf about to return up top, Su Ran quickly retreated into the bird’s nest and picked up the entrenching pickaxe the werewolf had casually left at the entrance.
Based on the werewolf’s earlier behavior, it didn’t seem to intend to harm her, but it was still more reassuring to have the weapon in her own hand.
The werewolf soon flew back into the nest.
As the werewolf’s tall figure entered, Su Ran felt the light in the bird’s nest dim considerably.
And after the werewolf came in, Su Ran heard several swishing sounds of climbing and jumping; in just a few seconds, four more beastmen jumped in from outside…
