Chapter 22: Engaged To Gu Lanli
Jiang Ning was called up by Madam Jiang on the weekend.
They two returned from out of town in the early morning.
After eating breakfast in the morning, she was told to go to the Sui Family.
Jiang Ning put on a blue-based white plaid dress.
That pile of white princess dresses was cast aside by her, and she bought a lot of colorful clothes these past few days.
Her pocket money instantly shrank by tens of thousands.
Jiang Ning wilted completely.
Thinking that going to the Sui Family might get her some money, she immediately became full of spirit again.
This time Jiang Yan was going too, and he sat in the living room, flipping through a book in his hand.
Seeing Jiang Ning come down, his gaze lingered more on her skirt.
He hadn’t spoken to Jiang Ning for a whole week already.
But he still couldn’t help paying attention to her every day.
He discovered that she had locked away all the white princess dresses she used to love the most.
Every day, her routine of school, home, and back was a straight line without causing any trouble.
She had to buy a spicy starch sausage from the grilled sausage stall across the street every day after school.
She never used to eat this kind of junk food before, thinking it was for poor people.
But now she ate it without hiding from anyone.
She even didn’t fuss about finding Gu Lanli, nor did she go make trouble for Su Wanyuan again.
These were originally good deeds, but Jiang Yan was somewhat preoccupied.
Jiang Ning turned her gaze and met Jiang Yan’s inquiring eyes.
She wasn’t panicked at all and just carried on with what she was doing.
Now that her foot was better, the fierce tiger was about to leave its den.
Father Jiang was dressed neatly and even specially adjusted his wig, smiling as he said: “Ning Ning, Xiao Yan, let’s go, to the maternal grandparents’ home.”
Madam Jiang frowned slightly, her gaze falling on Jiang Yan, but in the end she didn’t say anything.
The car soon arrived at the Sui Family.
The two families weren’t far apart, convenient for Madam Jiang to return to her parental home.
Jiang Ning spotted her maternal grandfather and maternal grandmother at first glance.
Temples graying but full of spirit.
Old Madam Sui waved towards Jiang Ning: “Ning Ning is here.”
Seeing Old Madam Sui, Jiang Ning thought of her own grandmother; she walked forward, hugged Old Madam Sui, and lingered a bit longer in the warm embrace with reluctance.
“Maternal Grandmother, I missed you so much.”
Old Madam Sui smilingly stroked Jiang Ning’s hair: “Silly child, if you miss Maternal Grandmother, come anytime; the door of the maternal grandparents’ home is always open for you.”
Old Master Sui coughed lightly in dissatisfaction.
Jiang Ning immediately hugged him too: “Maternal Grandfather, I missed you too.”
He laughed out loud: “Little clever one, right, I heard you got into the math competition class at school—not unworthy of being my granddaughter, so smart!”
Jiang Ning: “…”
They really didn’t want to think about the original body’s previous grades and just believed it wholesale.
Old Master Sui waved his big hand: “Reward!”
Jiang Ning didn’t react until the Alipay notification of 100,000 arrived.
It was rewarded just like that?
So imperial?
Jiang Ning leaned in close, thickening her face: “Maternal Grandfather, this exam I beat the whole school second place; I think the next whole school first place will be me!”
Old Master Sui ate the big, round, fragrant pie, and with another wave of his big hand, rewarded Jiang Ning another 100,000.
“Good granddaughter, whether our Sui Family can bring honor depends entirely on you; that girl Sui Tang can’t be relied on.”
Jiang Ning delightedly looked at her account balance, coughed lightly, patted her chest in guarantee: “You’ve found the right person; starting tomorrow, I’ll study diligently!”
Sui Tang twitched her mouth at the side, turned her head and asked Jiang Yan in a low voice: “Why do I feel like she’s scamming money.”
Look at her beaming with joy.
Don’t they know what Jiang Ning is like at school?
But Sui Tang was a firm cousin party; no matter how bad the cousin was, she was still good.
Jiang Yan said flatly: “Remove the ‘feel’.”
Sui Tang: “…”
Next came the main topic.
Everyone sat in the living room; seeing all present, Old Master Sui said loudly: “Next, I have good news to tell everyone.”
Jiang Ning looked full of expectation, just waiting for the word “reward” from Old Master Sui’s mouth again.
“Ning Ning will turn eighteen next year too; the Gu Family just came to ask my opinion, so I’ve decided to let the two families’ children get engaged first, and marry after finishing university.”
Jiang Ning’s full-eyed expectation shattered, and she petrified in place.
Only Sui Tang, the sweet and naive one, bounced in place: “Then Gu Lanli will really be my cousin-in-law? Great!”
Great my ass!
She was young, hadn’t even dated, and now had to step into the marriage hall?
Could this book be a bit more logical?
Jiang Ning stiffly pulled out a smile: “Maternal Grandfather, I’m still young, and… we can’t just act on our own; what if Lan Li Gege doesn’t agree?”
Old Master Sui snorted coldly: “Whether he agrees or not, who cares about him; as long as my granddaughter is happy, this marriage is nailed down.”
Jiang Ning cried; she cast a pleading gaze towards Madam Jiang: don’t, Mom, say something.
Madam Jiang furrowed her brows, somewhat concerned: “Isn’t it a bit too hasty? My Ning Ning does like that Gu Family boy, but I don’t know Lanli’s opinion.”
“His opinion isn’t important; in a family, marriage alliance is the right choice.”
Hearing this, Madam Jiang felt it made sense and agreed: “Alright then, I’ll make an appointment with Madam Gu to meet.”
Jiang Ning: “…”
Could they be a bit more firm in attitude; it was decided just like that—her opinion was important too, okay.
“I think…”
Old Master Sui waved his big hand: “Don’t worry, everything is handled by Maternal Grandfather; rest assured, that boy can only be yours.”
Actually, it wouldn’t matter if not…
Jiang Ning had bitterness she couldn’t voice.
All for this character setting.
If she suddenly didn’t like Gu Lanli, that would be the strangest.
Jiang Ning came back excitedly and returned with a stern face.
Listlessly returning to her room, she suddenly felt arranged into a marriage.
Her heart was full of sorrow.
Little Honey couldn’t hold back and spoke: 【Host, don’t worry; this engagement won’t happen.】
Jiang Ning: “Damn, why didn’t you say so earlier; made me worry for so long.”
She recovered her spirit again, deeply afraid of getting engaged to Gu Lanli and it becoming a stain on her life.
So she took out her mobile phone and switched to her alternate account.
The chat with Meng Jing had stopped three days ago.
This kid’s replies to her were either “mm” or “oh”.
Anyone with eyes could see he was refusing her overtures.
No wonder; had her intention to hook him been discovered?
Jiang Ning couldn’t figure it out.
Top grade was hard to hook.
Suddenly noise came from downstairs.
Jiang Ning opened the door and went down.
She discovered an uninvited guest had come to the house.
An elegantly dressed old lady with silver-white hair mixed with a bit of black combed neatly; she sat stern-faced in the center of the sofa, with Father Jiang and Madam Jiang sitting in front of her.
Father Jiang looked ashen-faced, while Madam Jiang was very cold, showing no welcoming attitude towards the old lady in front of her.
Jiang Ning blinked, quietly hiding at the stairwell on the second floor, observing the situation downstairs.
Muttering in her mouth: “Who is this.”
“Our grandmother.”
Jiang Yan’s voice came from behind.
Jiang Ning got scared and her foot slipped.
Jiang Yan quickly grabbed her collar with swift hands, avoiding the tragedy of her nearly tumbling down.
Jiang Ning wiped the sweat that broke out in aftershock; her foot bandage had only been removed not long ago—she couldn’t afford to limp again.
“Thanks.” She said.
Jiang Yan looked down at her.
She even knew to say thanks—truly a rare sight.
Then Jiang Ning pointed at him and cursed: “Also, don’t appear behind me like a ghost, or if I fall to death, as a ghost I won’t let you go!”
