Chapter 96: Hiring A Wolf
“Definitely nonsense,” A Le said. “How could Young Master Lu possibly fear—”
“Not fear,” Lu Chengjing said. “It’s respect.”
He slowly recounted the matter of coincidentally encountering Yan Rui and his group in the Wood Workshop that day.
Hearing that the insolent scholar had been beaten, Qiao Yu’an clapped his hands in delight and rarely praised Shang Wan, “Well beaten!”
A Le secretly clicked his tongue. How had he not noticed before that Shang Wan knew martial arts?
Pushing the wheelchair up the hillside, Qiao Yu’an looked back at the village and sighed, “Why do you live so far from the village? If something happens, there’s no one to help.”
No sooner had he spoken than a Gray Wolf darted around the wooden shed ahead, scaring the ewe into bolting. A Le couldn’t hold it back at all. “Ah! Young Master, save me!”
Qiao Yu’an quickly turned back to help pull the rope tight, shouting, “Don’t run with it! Pull back!”
“Baa~” The ewe kicked a hoof back at A Le behind her. A Le gripped the rope tightly and reflexively closed his eyes. Before he even felt the pain, he shouted first, “Ah—Huh?”
Why doesn’t it hurt?
“Ah!”
His head was suddenly knocked once—definitely not by the sheep’s kick!
A Le immediately opened his eyes and saw a graceful figure standing ahead, one hand grabbing the ewe’s hind leg, the other pressing down on the ewe’s back.
The ewe’s hind leg twitched wildly but couldn’t match the strength of the hand gripping it. In the end, it unwillingly relaxed and became docile.
“Baa~”
“Good sheep, good sheep.” Shang Wan praised with a beaming smile. Her own little one’s rations had finally arrived.
Qiao Yu’an rubbed his eyes hard. Could this woman fly? How did she whoosh over here like that?
“Good baby, come, get familiar with the rations.” Shang Wan picked up Yuan Yuan and placed her on the ewe’s back, only letting go once the little one was seated steadily.
Because it was a gift, the ewe had been washed very clean by the people at the manor.
A Le couldn’t help reminding her, “This sheep bites people.”
“No problem.” Shang Wan’s tone was relaxed. “If it dares to open its mouth, I’ll stew it.”
Her words carried a hint of murderous intent. The ewe seemed to shudder. When A Le looked again, it seemed like an illusion.
“Sheep sheep!” Yuan Yuan reached out her little meat hand to hug the ewe’s neck and nuzzle it. A strange glint flashed in her eyes, and her little mouth popped out a word: “Go!”
Under A Le’s astonished gaze, the ewe actually carried Yuan Yuan toward the wooden shed.
But when passing the Gray Wolf, the ewe took a semicircular detour, her fear evident in her hesitant steps.
Qiao Yu’an’s attention was entirely on Xiao Hui. He praised, “This dog is really handsome.”
Lu Chengjing: “…”
His friend might as well gouge out those eyes.
Qiao Yu’an squatted down and extended his palm upward toward Xiao Hui. “Come, shake.”
Xiao Hui glanced at him, a cold glint flashing in its green wolf eyes.
“Still green eyes, really…” Qiao Yu’an’s praise trailed off. Wait, do dogs have green eyes?
Something with green eyes that looks like a dog seems to be…
At the same time, Shang Wan’s voice echoed eerily, “This is a wolf.”
“It really is a wolf…” Qiao Yu’an’s pupils shrank. He jumped three feet high on the spot. “Wolf!!!”
He stumbled on landing, his body instantly losing balance as he began to roll down the hillside.
Shang Wan, having anticipated it, reached out and yanked his belt, flinging him back beside A Le with a reverse toss.
A Le reached out to steady him but was knocked backward. In his panic, he grabbed Qiao Yu’an’s pants.
“Rip—”
Qiao Yu’an was feeling dizzy when a breeze blew, suddenly making his legs feel chilly.
He looked down and saw two big white legs…
“Ah!!!”
“Ah!!!”
The master and servant’s screams rang out simultaneously.
Qiao Yu’an flushed red with shame and hurriedly pulled up his pants, anxiously looking toward Shang Wan.
Shang Wan very conscientiously turned her head aside. Ignoring her constantly shaking shoulders, she seemed as usual.
She swore she really hadn’t expected Qiao Yu’an’s pants to be pulled down.
Gripping the wheelchair armrest, she stifled endless laughter. Seeing her struggling, Lu Chengjing helplessly said, “If you want to laugh, just laugh. Yu’an won’t hold it against you.”
“Pffthahaha!”
Qiao Yu’an: “…”
Forget friends for a beauty! Friendship over!!!
“Young Master, good thing the robe is long enough,” A Le said while helping Qiao Yu’an tie his belt. “I advised you earlier not to use this belt, but you insisted, saying you were used to it. Regret it now?”
A vein popped on Qiao Yu’an’s forehead. “Shut up!”
A Le pursed his lips and deliberately tied the belt extra tight, lest his young master embarrass himself again later.
Finally sorted out, seeing Shang Wan still laughing, Qiao Yu’an irritably said, “Had enough laughing yet?”
“No.” Shang Wan thought of Qiao Yu’an’s legs and pictured white radishes. For some reason, she just wanted to laugh and couldn’t stop.
Worried she might laugh herself breathless, Lu Chengjing placed his left hand on the back of Shang Wan’s hand and patted it gently, helplessly calling, “Niangzi.”
“Just a bit longer.” Shang Wan laughed a while more before taking a deep breath and slowly steadying her breathing until it normalized.
Qiao Yu’an walked over with a sulky face, glancing sideways at her especially flushed face from laughing.
This woman just loved others’ misfortune!
Shang Wan pretended not to see his sulky face and pushed the wheelchair forward. “Let’s go. Xiao Huan has already boiled the medicinal tea.”
Xiao Hui rose and followed, its tail occasionally brushing Shang Wan’s hem, looking perfectly docile.
Qiao Yu’an looked at Xiao Hui, curiosity itching like a cat scratching inside. He hurried a few steps forward. “Chengjing, where did this wolf come from?”
Lu Chengjing was hesitating whether to tell the truth when Shang Wan admitted herself, “I hired it.”
“Hired?” Qiao Yu’an eyed Shang Wan suspiciously. “I’ve heard of hiring cat servants, but who hires wolves?”
Shang Wan wasn’t provoked by him. “Believe it or not.”
Qiao Yu’an: “…”
Was it that hard to tell him where she hired it from?
Raising a wolf was way more impressive than a dog. He wanted to hire one too!
But asking Shang Wan directly felt awkward.
He glanced back at A Le, signaling him to ask quickly!
A Le had some tacit understanding with his young master and got it. “Young Madam, where did you hire the wolf? My young master wants to hire one too.”
Qiao Yu’an: That last sentence was totally unnecessary!
“Over there.” Shang Wan pointed toward the expanse of mountain forest. “The method is simple too. Find a wolf den, pick one you like, hoist it and run. If you outrun it and it doesn’t bite, you’ve successfully hired it.”
Master and servant: “…”
Qiao Yu’an felt Shang Wan was toying with him and seized the chance to badmouth her in front of Lu Chengjing. “Listen to her. She lies without even blinking.”
“She blinked,” Lu Chengjing said calmly. “I saw it.”
Qiao Yu’an: “…”
Had his friend been fed a love potion by this woman?
He got to the point. “So, you think she’s lying too?”
Lu Chengjing denied it without blinking. “No, I believe everything Niangzi says.”
Qiao Yu’an, force-fed a mouthful of dog food: “…”
He fumed, “Lu Chengjing, you’ve changed! You weren’t like this before!”
Lu Chengjing remained unmoved. “So?”
“I…” Qiao Yu’an squeezed his eyes shut and blurted it out. “I want to hire a wolf too!”
Shang Wan was speechless. So after all that circling, this was the point.
