Chapter 16: The Curtain Rises!
In the world, sky, earth, and ocean formed a trinity constituting the world. He, now without any reservations, directly targeted the ocean and earth this time, eroding their core authorities.
The ocean’s incarnations Pontus and Oceanus governed the inner sea and ocean currents respectively, each mastering different laws and concepts of water.
Now, Cronus had intercepted part of the conversion results from virtual to real of the ocean currents, creating the outer sea that supports the earth, incorporating the authority of water laws into his grasp.
This move not only openly contended for the authorities of Pontus and Oceanus, but also struck at Pontus, as well as at Oceanus, with whom he had always had a cold( almost hostile) relationship.
There was also the earth-shaking, further restricting Mother Goddess of All Things Gaia.
Striking at Oceanus was because Oceanus had married his daughter Clymene to the God King’s staunch ally, Weaver of Death Iapetus, which greatly dissatisfied Cronus.
As for striking at Pontus, it was because he had directly married his eldest daughter Eurybia to Cosmic Framework Crius.
Eurybia was a powerful Titan birthed by Pontus together with earth, Pontus’s eldest daughter, the essence condensed from earth and inner sea, representing the vast power within the world.
Her power was extremely formidable, no less than that of the Primal Titans; otherwise, Crius would not have accepted this marriage alliance.
Regarding this marriage alliance, Cronus, who had not yet fully centralized power at the time, had nothing to say; everyone was acting rightfully and legitimately, and he could not interfere.
Pontus’s action back then was also for self-preservation, seeking allies amid the strife of the gods.
Among the twelve Titans, each had marriage alliances; he, as an “outer god,” had always been on tenterhooks within the emerging order.
Especially after Cronus grew increasingly greedy and brutal, he became even more afraid, thus actively forming marriage alliances with the Titan Gods to seek shelter.
As the inner sea, he was not of a violent nature, relatively peaceful in temperament, but the tree desired stillness while the wind did not cease; before the greedy God King, he could not stay out of it alone.
Possessing the great authority of the sea was, in the God King’s eyes, an original sin.
After Cronus’s move that killed many birds with one stone, Pontus dared not voice any objection, but fear and anger had already enveloped his heart.
But that was all; he would never dare to rebel.
Cronus had not pushed further for the time being; though increasingly brutal, he still retained rationality, his methods growing ever more cunning, not forcing Pontus to the brink of death, grasping the measure just right and maintaining a delicate balance.
Pontus could only manage self-preservation; he did not want to offend Crius over such a trivial matter, which would be too unworthy.
The gods truly had no way to deal with Cronus; he had indeed grasped the measure perfectly.
But more and more Titans were leaving Mount Othrys and not often returning for feasts and gatherings.
And now Mother of Earth, Mother Goddess Gaia, was truly furious, anger enveloping her heart.
She had endured so many previous matters, but in return only got pushing one’s luck, bullying the gods too far!
She had tolerated the erosion of earth’s authority, after all, Mother Goddess Gaia’s essence was the origin of all things, matter.
But now creating an earth-shaking authority—what was this supposed to mean?
Greedy Cronus! Exactly like his Father God!
This filled her with bone-chilling coldness and rage.
Equally unable to endure was Goddess Queen Rhea.
After Cronus devoured “ocean” once again, the intolerable Mother Goddess Rhea could no longer bear Cronus’s greed and brutality.
No mother could tolerate all her children being devoured one by one.
Moreover, such events would have no end, endless!
Thus, she sought an audience with Mother Goddess Gaia, and under shared indignation and expectation, the two goddesses hit it off.
Then Mother Goddess Gaia went to seek Night God Nyx.
The three great mother goddesses together devised a scheme to shake the universe.
After receiving shelter from Gaia and Nyx, during the God King’s gestation laws once again, this time Rhea did not fully let Cronus weave the laws; amid everything as usual, she infused her own will.
She used her own great authority to steal control of one of Cronus’s own laws within the laws he wove, integrating it into her own laws, ultimately gestating her last child, that god who bore hope and the future.
Mother Goddess Gaia, to protect this secret, meticulously created an unremarkable little island.
On a dark night, Lady of Night Nyx exhausted her divine power, shielding all probing gazes in the universe, turning this area into absolute darkness and secrecy.
In a secret cave on this little island, she tearfully gave birth to this child in hiding.
Then she took the great Earth Law—abundance, prosperity—that Mother Goddess had given her, condensed it into a stone as the powerful law’s embodiment, and presented it to Cronus as her newly gestated child.
Though Cronus felt it was not quite as he had envisioned, since this time the law he sought to erode and gestate was sky.
That symbolized supreme authority, the only thing he still lacked.
For the upper heaven forever high above, overlooking all, his great Father God Uranus, that supreme authority—he was forever filled with longing and awe.
The desire to possess it had never diminished, and as time passed, as he grew more powerful and more centralized, he desired it even more.
He envied his Father God’s absolute power reigning over all too much!
He wanted to take that one more step too badly!
Though it had failed now, he did not suspect Rhea, after all, gestation laws had great randomness—not whatever one wanted would appear.
Moreover, sky dome was such a formidable authority; it was reasonable not to succeed easily!
The God King thought smugly.
Besides, having centralized power to this extent, he had nothing left to fear, feeling himself invincible in the world.
These two laws seemed extremely powerful to him, perfectly fitting his own, and he was very satisfied, greedily incorporating them.
He once again unhesitatingly devoured this newly gestated law; for him, it was routine.
Watching Cronus still unhesitating, Goddess Rhea’s heart turned to ashes; this time her inner world had no ripples left, only endless despair and calm.
This great hero she had once deeply loved and worshiped had, after gaining power, over the long years, now become a God King exactly like his Father God—equally greedy and brutal, ruthless and venomous.
He allowed no one to defy him and would not listen to any kind voices.
And he had learned to do as he pleased, greedily to the extreme, without any bottom line.
As time slowly passed, the secret infant on Crete had grown up.
