Chapter 35: Messing With The Missile Unit
“With my skills, how could I possibly be caught by the Blue Team?”
Chang Ning said indifferently.
“Alright, can we stop bragging? The main business is more important!”
Seeing that Chang Ning had not been eliminated, Chen Guotao was happy inside, but he didn’t show it. He waited until the two had finished talking before making his presence known.
“Platoon Leader, are you planning to target the Blue Team’s Missile Unit?” Chang Ning asked.
Chen Pai smiled and asked, “How did you know we’re targeting the Missile Unit, and not the combat readiness gas station right in front of us?”
“Do I need to say it? Targeting the combat readiness gas station has too low a cost-performance ratio, and the Missile Unit is not far from it nearby. Hitting the rabbit while grabbing the grass isn’t a matter of convenience?
Don’t forget, when you were writing intelligence for Xiao Zhuang, I was right next to you.”
After hearing Chang Ning’s analysis, Chen Guotao understood in his heart. It turned out that he had let the cat out of the bag on his side, allowing this kid to guess it.
“Alright, since you know, share any ideas you have. Everyone brainstorm to finalize the plan.”
Chen Guotao said seriously. To target the Missile Unit next to the combat readiness gas station, without a detailed plan, they definitely wouldn’t even be able to enter their camp.
“Chen Pai, I guess you and Xiao Zhuang are definitely planning to go all out, both sides perish.”
Without Chen Guotao saying anything, Chang Ning knew he was right just by seeing Xiao Zhuang’s shocked expression.
Because with just two people trying to target their Missile Unit, how could it possibly succeed without paying some price? It might even be that the fish dies but the net doesn’t break.
“Keep going.”
Seeing that Chang Ning had more to say, Chen Guotao didn’t interrupt him and gestured for him to continue.
“Chen Pai, first tell me your plan.”
Chang Ning didn’t share his own idea but instead asked about Chen Guotao’s plan first.
“Xiao Zhuang and I plan to first steal the gas truck from the combat readiness gas station, then drive straight to the Missile Unit Barracks, and finally blow up the gas truck. That should be enough for the Operations Department to rule the Missile Unit out of the exercise.”
Chen Guotao briefly explained his plan to Chang Ning.
“Platoon Leader, your plan has way too many loopholes.
First, although it’s not far from here to the Missile Unit, there’s still some distance to cover. If you steal their truck, won’t they report it to their superiors?
Once this is exposed, everyone will know you’re heading for the Missile Unit—it’s too obvious.
Secondly, driving the truck makes too much noise. How can you guarantee you’ll get it into the Missile Unit Barracks? You’re exploiting the exercise loophole. In actual combat, you two wouldn’t even get close to their barracks before being taken out.”
Chen Guotao’s plan was too crude. Chang Ning didn’t know how it succeeded in the original plot. Did they really think the guns in their hands were fire sticks?
Was the protagonist halo really that powerful? Now he didn’t dare bet whether Xiao Zhuang still had the protagonist halo. It was better to play it safe.
“So what do you say we do?”
Chen Guotao was well aware of these issues, but he had no better way and could only exploit the rules loophole.
Besides, he was exploiting the loophole with real strength. Why couldn’t the Operations Department make the correct ruling?
“You said earlier you’re planning to blow up the gas truck?”
“Yeah, what’s up?”
Chen Guotao was a bit confused by Chang Ning’s jumpy conversation.
“How many hand grenades do you have left on you?”
Chang Ning continued to ask.
Chen Guotao: “Not many, only three left.”
Chang Ning: “Enough to use.”
“No, Chang Ning, if you have something to say, just say it straight. Can you stop with the vague, roundabout talk!”
Chang Ning kept not getting to the point, which frustrated Xiao Zhuang. He started protesting from the side.
“My plan is simple: I’ll cover you. You and the Platoon Leader directly infiltrate the Missile Unit Barracks, then detonate the missile vehicle. This plan is way more reliable than your previous one.”
Chen Guotao recalled Chang Ning’s marksmanship and realized it could indeed work. He immediately beamed with joy: “This plan is good. What are we waiting for? Let’s get started.”
After the three cleaned up the traces they left behind, they headed toward the Missile Unit.
At exactly six o’clock in the afternoon, wisps of cooking smoke rose over the Blue Team Missile Unit Barracks. They were having dinner.
The guards at the barracks were somewhat lax, and the patrol work of the outer security platoon had also become sloppy.
A lone soldier was meticulously checking his assigned area with his rifle in hand. If anything went wrong, the leader would hold him accountable.
His peripheral vision caught a black shadow flashing by. The soldier immediately gripped his rifle tightly and turned to look, but found nothing—only weeds swaying in the wind.
He felt some doubt and walked toward the swaying weeds.
Suddenly, a gale blew from behind. Before he could react, his throat was seized.
Immediately after, a black shadow leaped up from the weeds in front of him. His rifle was snatched away. The hand choking his throat didn’t let up at all. He couldn’t say anything and could only watch wide-eyed.
The one who acted was Chen Guotao. He dragged the soldier into a deep ditch, folded his hands behind his back and tied them with rope, then taped his mouth: “We’re Red Team scouts, brother. Sorry to trouble you. Please follow the exercise rules, or we’ll have to knock you out.”
Hearing that these two would knock him out, the soldier quickly shook his head, indicating he would follow the exercise rules. Being knocked out would make his head hurt badly when he woke up—he didn’t want to go through that.
Seeing the man was cooperative, Chen Guotao finally released the hand that had been pressing on his neck, picked up the rifle from the ground, and waved to Xiao Zhuang: “Let’s go!”
The two sneaked away, sticking to the tents along the way to avoid patrolling Blue Team members. If they couldn’t avoid them, they would cut open a tent with a dagger, slip inside to hide for a while, and come out once the people had passed.
Of course, if they ran head-on into the Blue Team, there was no need to fear. Chang Ning, set up outside with an 85-style sniper rifle, was providing cover for them.
It was just that the current grassroots units’ equipment wasn’t great and lacked radio earpieces. Otherwise, the three of them could communicate anytime to identify and fill gaps. No need for all this trouble.
Chen Pai and Xiao Zhuang casually tore off Blue Team insignia and stuck it on their military uniforms, then swaggered into the area near the missile vehicles.
At times like this, the more relaxed, the less likely to be discovered.
“Someone’s coming!”
Xiao Zhuang, just about to throw the hand grenade, flinched in fright. He hurriedly stuffed the hand grenade into his pocket and pretended to chat with Chen Pai. If you looked closely, you could see the cold sweat on his forehead.
“That was close.”
After the people walked far away, Xiao Zhuang immediately pulled the pin on the hand grenade and ran off with Chen Guotao. This time was no time to worry about exposure.
“Stop!”
The two were sneaking around and running randomly in the barracks, which looked suspicious. Their odd behavior drew the guards’ attention.
Xiao Zhuang and Chen Guotao hadn’t run far when thick blue smoke rose from a row of missile vehicles, indicating the Missile Unit was scrapped.
“Grab those two!”
Now everyone knew Xiao Zhuang and Chen Guotao were suspicious and all closed in on them.
Now it was time for Chang Ning to shine.
