Chapter 6: Worse Than a Beast
Xia Chenge arrived at the room of the original owner’s grandparents.
As soon as she pushed the door open, a foul odor assaulted her nostrils, and Xia Chenge frowned slightly.
Two beds were placed in the room, with a withered and aged elder lying on each.
Xia Chenge walked forward, and both elders opened their cloudy eyes.
“Xiao Ge.” Old Madam Xia saw her and started crying, “Did your aunt scold and hit you again?”
Old Master Xia said nothing, looking at her with heartache.
After the original owner’s parents passed away, the two elders fell seriously ill. They have been bedridden for over ten years. They knew about the original owner’s encounters but were powerless.
However, now that the Xia family’s young lady was her, she would treat the elders as her own family.
“I’m fine,” Xia Chenge shook her head, “I’m very well, Grandmother!”
Old Madam Xia was stunned, unable to believe that Xia Chenge had actually spoken!
Seeing this, Xia Chenge understood and smiled, then said, “Grandmother, I will protect you and Grandfather from now on.”
The Old Master was full of shock, “Xiao Ge, you’re talking?”
“Yes, I’ll chat with you from now on,” Xia Chenge gently turned her head.
It took the old couple a long time to digest this information, and they were so excited they couldn’t stop crying, “My Xiao Ge, my child…”
Xia Chenge, upon learning of the original owner’s experiences, couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness.
“Don’t cry,” Xia Chenge softly comforted the old couple, “I will protect the Xia family.”
“Good, good, protect the Xia family, my good child.” Old Master Xia stared intently at Xia Chenge, as if afraid she would change back in the blink of an eye.
“Hmph, you old undying things, I knew you were biased, leaving everything to Xia Mingxuan!” Xia Minglan suddenly kicked open the room door, barging in furiously, pointing at her own parents and cursing, “Am I not your biological daughter?”
“Maternal Grandfather, Maternal Grandmother, no matter what, my mother is your daughter. Why are you favoring that dead uncle? Haven’t I been taking care of you all these years?” Xu Jingyun also came in to scold.
Both elders trembled slightly, their eyes red with anger, full of pain and disappointment.
Xia Chenge knew that although the original owner was withdrawn and didn’t communicate with others, she had always taken meticulous care of the two elders.
As for the so-called biological daughter, besides pestering the elders to give the Xia family to her, she never even served them by their bedside, let alone brought them a cup of water.
“Since that’s the case, don’t blame me for being impolite and kicking you out,” Xia Minglan said sinisterly.
“I already told you, this is the Xia family!” Xia Chenge turned around, looking sharply at Xia Minglan, “Xia Minglan, your surname is Xia, but you are blind and have become a heartless beast.”
“Who are you calling names?” Xia Minglan questioned sharply.
“I’m calling you, a dog worse than a beast!” Xia Chenge calmly released her killing intent, causing Xia Minglan and Xu Jingyun to suddenly feel a chill.
The mother and daughter instinctively took a step back.
“Get out, don’t make me invite you!” Xia Chenge said sternly, “If you want to die, stay.”
Xia Chenge’s command to “get out” made Xia Minglan and her daughter feel a fear as if a knife was hanging above their heads, ready to fall and kill them at any moment. They instinctively retreated out of the room.
Bang!
The room door closed in front of them, blocking their sight.
“Grandfather, Grandmother, we don’t need to be afraid of them,” Xia Chenge half-knelt by the bedside, “Xiao Ge has grown up and can protect you.”
Upon hearing this, the two elders wept loudly.
“Don’t cry, Xiao Ge has really grown up.” Xia Chenge didn’t know how to comfort people; she just wanted to tell them that Xia Chenge had the ability to protect anyone she wanted to protect.
No matter how terrifying Xia Minglan and the others were, they weren’t zombies from the apocalypse!
It’s just a pity that this body is too weak. Even though she was once the most powerful genius girl among evolved humans in the apocalypse, she couldn’t exert any abilities now. Dealing with those who bullied her today had already taken a toll, let alone using her healing power to cure the two elders!
“My poor child,” Old Madam Xia heard her words and her tears flowed even more.
Born in the apocalypse, with parents who died early, her life was reduced to fighting zombies. She had become numb to life and death and had no emotions. However, the elders’ gazes and tears brought Xia Chenge an unprecedented sense of heartache and sadness.
“Grandfather, Grandmother, don’t worry, our Xia family will always be the Xia family!” Xia Chenge clasped Old Madam’s hand, making a vow-like promise.
Xia Chenge imitated the original owner’s daily routine, taking care of the two elders somewhat clumsily. Accustomed to fighting, it was her first time taking care of two elderly people in their twilight years, and it was more exhausting than fighting zombies all day.
After comforting the elders, Xia Chenge was so hungry her stomach was sticking to her back.
And the Xia family’s servants hadn’t called her down for a meal yet!
Xia Chenge left the room and went downstairs to find something to eat.
Xia Minglan and Xu Jingyun were not there. When the servants saw Xia Chenge, they acted as if she were invisible, continuing their conversations.
“I’m hungry,” Xia Chenge said to the servants.
The three servants glanced at her contemptuously, “Can’t you go to the kitchen and eat yourself?”
“I’m hungry!” Xia Chenge repeated word by word.
“I said there’s food in the kitchen, are you deaf?” The servant who replied said impatiently, “Do you really think you’re some young lady? Laugh…”
Before she could finish speaking, a gust of wind swept past the three servants.
The next moment, the servant who had spoken rudely had her throat gripped, her remaining words choked off.
This scene happened in the blink of an eye. The other two servants stared at Xia Chenge in disbelief, their eyes wide with terror they couldn’t control.
“I said, I’m hungry,” Xia Chenge said calmly, emphasizing her previous statement again.
“Let, let, let go of me…” The servant whose throat was gripped turned red in the face, speaking with difficulty.
“I’m hungry,” Xia Chenge acted as if she hadn’t heard her, looking indifferently at the other two servants.
As soon as the two servants met Xia Chenge’s gaze, they felt a surge of killing intent. Their bodies instantly went weak, and they stammered, “I, I’ll go make food right away.”
With that, they rushed into the kitchen as if escaping, leaving the suffocating hall.
Xia Chenge released the servant, whose eyes were already rolling back, and warned coldly, “I hate people who don’t know their place the most. Remember, the master of the Xia family is me!”
“I, I know I was wrong, Little Miss, please spare me.” The servant, having narrowly escaped death, was no longer arrogant. She believed that Xia Chenge would truly kill her!
Xia Chenge smiled gently, “If you know you’re wrong, correct your mistakes and don’t do things you shouldn’t, understand?”
“I, I understand!”
“Go help in the kitchen,” Xia Chenge waved her hand.
The servant, as if granted a great pardon, scrambled up and rushed into the kitchen.
As soon as the servant turned away, Xia Chenge immediately clutched her chest in pain, a trickle of blood seeping from the corner of her mouth, her face pale.
After a while, she recovered, and her complexion improved slightly.
She got up and walked towards the kitchen. The busy servants in the kitchen were so startled when they saw her that they dropped their knives with a clatter, trembling all over.
