Chapter 238: Love Letter
Wen Zhixing and Meng Yi had been married for quite some time, so her pregnancy wasn’t unusual.
“The first three months were very unstable, with signs of miscarriage. It’s only stabilized now,” Xue Shufan continued gossiping with her Junior Sister in a low, steady voice.
The others were busy with their own affairs; even if they heard, they wouldn’t react. They all knew this matter well and it wasn’t worth discussing.
“Four months already?” Lian Li glanced at Meng Yi’s belly, completely unable to tell she was pregnant.
Xue Shufan thought for two seconds and said, “A little over four months.”
Jin Shiyue was discussing official business with Pei Qingji and Zhong Yang. Lian Li wasn’t interested, so she chatted with Xue Shufan while digging into ice cream.
“The scent on you is different from before. It smells rich, opulent, and luxurious. The middle and base notes hide wisps of sweetness.” Xue Shufan’s nose was incredibly sensitive. She sniffed her Junior Sister closely, “Did you change your perfume?”
“It’s a salon fragrance from ROJA,” Lian Li smiled. “I didn’t spray much, and you could still smell it.”
Inside the luxurious and elegant clubhouse, because a certain Second Young Master disliked strong perfume scents, everyone who came defaulted to not wearing perfume, mostly just carrying the lingering scent of incense from their clothes.
To accommodate the pregnant woman, no one smoked in the clubhouse that night. A brass incense burner hung in mid-air, and fragrant mist drifted down like a waterfall, gradually filling every corner of the room.
Lian Li hadn’t smelled her own scent, so she was somewhat surprised by Xue Shufan’s keen sense of smell.
“It smells good,” Xue Shufan said, eating black swan cake with a spoon, praising generously, “It suits you very well.”
It was both fragrant and soft, yet possessed a sense of strength.
Wen Zhixing greeted them, then got up and walked to the terrace. A short while later, he returned, his arm around Meng Yi’s waist.
Meng Yi sat on the Sofa opposite Lian Li. Wen Zhixing draped a wool blanket over her, reminding her to stay warm and take care of herself.
Lian Li looked at Meng Yi and smiled, offering congratulations, “Congratulations.”
“Same to you,” Meng Yi’s delicate hand gripped the soft blanket, meeting Lian Li’s gaze. “You’re preparing to go abroad.”
Lian Li and Jin Shiyue’s relationship was something that surprised everyone.
Lian Li was clearly entangled with Jin Yanting, so how did she end up with Jin Shiyue overnight?
Wen Zhixing mentioned that Jin Shiyue had a girlfriend, and it was her roommate Lian Li. Meng Yi found this unbelievable upon hearing it.
Meng Yi didn’t live in the dormitory, and she had virtually no interaction with Lian Li at school. Naturally, she never imagined they would meet so often after graduation.
Zhong Yang asked the waiter to bring Louis XIII and Hennessy, and poured a glass of wine for everyone except Meng Yi. Holding a wine glass in one hand and tapping the crystal glass with a spoon in the other, he chattered a few words, raising his glass to wish Li Mei a bright future.
Lian Li was not reserved and accepted the blessing with a smile.
As the wine flowed and spirits rose, others went off to enjoy themselves – eating, playing billiards, singing, and playing… everyone had a companion.
Lian Li leaned back against the Sofa, turning to look for Jin Shiyue. He seemed to sense her gaze, hung up the phone, and walked towards her.
Jin Shiyue rested his palm on the edge of the Sofa back, leaning forward slightly from behind Lian Li. Her hair brushed against his chin, cool and light, like a floating feather.
“Bored?” the man’s voice sounded by her ear, his hot breath brushing past her ear, making it tickle.
Lian Li turned her head, tilting her face up slightly to meet his gaze. “No, I just wanted to see where you were.”
Pei Qingji had called Xue Shufan away for something. Lian Li didn’t want to rack her brain playing cards, nor did she want to exert herself playing billiards, so she sat there alone eating pastries.
Their faces were very close. Jin Shiyue could clearly see her long eyelashes, each one distinct, thick and curled, like a beautiful little fan.
White light seemed to be a veil covering her face, yet her eyes held something more dazzling than the light.
Jin Shiyue’s lips curved into a lazy smile, and he asked with an ambiguous tone, “Afraid I’ll run off?”
Lian Li stared at him for three seconds, then hooked his tie with her fair, slender fingers, twirling it around her fingers. She pulled gently and asked in a level tone, “Would you?”
Her strength wasn’t enough to move Jin Shiyue, but he still followed her pull, closing the distance between them.
Rushing in headfirst was one thing, but aggressiveness was another. Lian Li had rarely shown any aggressiveness.
This was the first time she had shown aggressiveness in front of him, as if defending something that belonged solely to her.
Their faces were inches apart. Jin Shiyue gazed at her, chuckling softly, “No.”
Upon hearing this, Lian Li let go and, with an unchanged expression, straightened his tie back to its original position.
Jin Shiyue’s dark eyes reflected her face, the smile in his eyes deepening, relaxed and leisurely.
Lian Li lightly patted his chest, being very understanding. “Alright, you can go back to your business.”
In relationships, Lian Li’s gaze was always a straight line, fixed on her target. Correspondingly, the other person had to be the same, not getting entangled by stray lines.
Jin Shiyue stood up straight but didn’t leave. Instead, he walked around the Sofa to Lian Li, took her hand, and pulled her up.
“Where are we going?” Lian Li asked, following him, confused.
“To watch a movie.”
The four-story Chinese-style villa had a private cinema on the third floor and rooms for the elite to rest on the fourth floor.
The spacious private cinema was empty. A waiter brought in food and fruit drinks, placed them on the Chinese-style coffee table with a lacquered rosewood surface, and then withdrew.
Lian Li chose the movie, an old art film depicting the quiet and bittersweet love of a deaf-mute young man and woman.
Jin Shiyue leaned back relaxedly against the Sofa, pulled her into his arms, holding her steadily as if holding a doll.
Lian Li’s back touched the man’s firm chest. She took off her shoes, brought her legs together, and sat cross-legged. She held a glass of pomegranate juice, biting the straw and drinking slowly.
The screen played the shimmering sea, and as time passed, it was reflected frame by frame on their faces.
The female protagonist sat quietly on the beach, gazing at the male protagonist surfing on a surfboard in the azure sea. The film’s visual language was artistically beautiful, with every scene filled with poetic and emotional tension.
Jin Shiyue lazily propped his temple with his long fingers, his mind not on the movie. He looked at Lian Li’s profile with interest, and after a moment, reached out and pinched her ear.
Lian Li looked back at him. “Aren’t we going to watch the movie?”
“I’m watching you,” Jin Shiyue nudged her hair with his nose, speaking as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
“I’ve seen this movie before,” Lian Li said. “The male protagonist dies in the end, and the female protagonist doesn’t cry. She pastes the male protagonist’s photograph on her surfboard and calmly accepts her lover’s passing.”
Jin Shiyue inhaled her scent, holding her in his arms, and chuckled softly, “That tragic?”
“It’s alright,” Lian Li turned her head, looking at the female protagonist in bright clothes on the screen. “Life isn’t always perfect. You have to calmly accept the departure of those around you. Neither the one who leaves nor the one who stays is wrong.”
“Comforting me?” Jin Shiyue’s smile faded, and he kissed the top of her head.
