Chapter 62: Beauty saves the hero
The examination report was fine, and there was no concussion. Lian Li’s head wasn’t missing anything, just had a bump.
It was past eleven when they left the Military Region General Hospital. After some thought, Lian Li decided to stay at her apartment for the night.
The car stopped downstairs from the apartment building. Lian Li, carrying the ointment, got out and politely bid farewell to Jin Shi Yue by the car side, “Thank you today, goodbye.”
Li Ye, in the driver’s seat, didn’t start the car and remained on standby, watching his boss through the rearview mirror.
A hand with slender bones rested on the windowsill, a faint red glow flickering between the fingers. Jin Shi Yue glanced sideways at Lian Li’s retreating back.
Perhaps she felt cold. Her walking pace was a little faster than usual. From the moment she turned until she disappeared, she didn’t look back once.
When Lian Li returned home, she found Jin Shi Yue’s jacket was still on her. She hit her forehead in annoyance, but accidentally hit her injury, causing her to gasp in pain.
She might have a concussion… sleepy and concussed, her intelligence quotient simply went on strike and quit.
To avoid doing anything foolish, Lian Li took a shower and slept. She sent Jin Shi Yue a message the next morning after waking up.
Lian Li: 「Shi Yue Ge, your jacket is with me. When is it convenient for me to bring it to you? 」
Lian Li: 「Or your people can come pick it up. 」
She waited for five minutes with no reply. She stopped waiting and put down her mobile phone to go to the bathroom.
Lian Li stood at the washbasin, looking at the medical gauze taped to her forehead in the mirror while brushing her teeth, pondering last night’s events.
Zhao Lizheng’s wails sounded pathetic; he was likely seriously injured.
Jin Shi Yue had been so heavy-handed with the Jin Family’s only grandson, showing no concern, as if he was certain the Zhao Family wouldn’t dare to make a sound.
…Did he have something on the Zhao Family?
Lian Li thought this was highly possible, but she couldn’t rack her brain to figure out what it could be.
After washing up and having breakfast, Lian Li checked her mobile phone messages before leaving.
Jin Shi Yue hadn’t replied.
He might have rushed to his next event after sending her home, partied all night, and only slept at dawn; it was also possible he went on a yacht trip to an island overnight.
In short, the Eldest Young Master had countless entertainment activities. It was normal for him not to be awake yet.
Lian Li received Jin Shi Yue’s message while practicing the piano in the orchestra’s practice room. She put down her instrument, picked up her mobile phone, and saw two simple words:
「Wait. 」
Wait for what.
Lian Li was bewildered, unable to fathom his way of doing things.
If the Eldest Young Master wasn’t in a hurry, then she had even less reason to be.
Lian Li put the jacket out of her mind and continued playing the piano. Her injured hand affected her playing, so she switched to her studies, her fingers tapping slowly on the keyboard.
Having an injured hand really impacted daily life.
Once her hand recovered, Lian Li planned to bury herself in the practice room to practice her music. However, Xue Shufan reminded her not to forget Wen Zhixing’s engagement party.
The engagement banquet for Wen Zhixing and Meng Yi was small, attended only by the elders of the Wen and Meng families.
Upon hearing this, Zhong Yang enthusiastically offered to host an engagement party for him.
Last time at the STAR bar, Xue Shufan had mentioned it to Zhong Yang.
With Zhong Yang as the host and Wen Zhixing as the main guest, Jin Shi Yue should attend.
Lian Li held his clothes, feeling like she was holding a hot potato, wanting to return them quickly and be done with it.
The party venue was set at a hot spring villa in the eastern suburbs, a secluded sanctuary carved out on a mountaintop, surrounded by mountains and water, boasting a unique landscape.
The abbot of the temple would regularly lead his disciples to chant scriptures and pray for good fortune and ward off bad luck. Although Dong Tan Yi Hao was named a villa, it was never open to the public and was exclusively used to entertain distinguished guests.
Lian Li arrived with Xue Shufan. Zhong Yang had already arranged rooms for them. Xue Shufan, full of energy, headed straight for the hall. Lian Li, feeling a bit tired from the car ride, decided to rest in her room first and go out later.
In the hall, filled with the sounds of waltzes, there was music and dancing. Wen Zhixing held a glass of wine, sitting next to Pei Qingji. Following Pei Qingji’s gaze, he saw Xue Shufan dancing with someone.
“Miss Xue left the Xue Family when you were abroad, right?” Wen Zhixing mentioned.
Zhong Yang, standing nearby, said directly, “Spit it out if you have something to say, stop meddling.”
Wen Zhixing pulled at the corner of his mouth and smiled, “I heard you donated millions in experimental equipment a while ago. When did President Pei become so generous?”
Pei Qingji glanced at him and retorted, “When did a few million become considered generous?”
A few million indeed wasn’t considered generous for the heir of Zhongtai Bank.
However, it was rare for Crown Prince Pei, who had returned from a ruthlessly capitalist country and was always driven by profit, to be so willing to spend money.
Wen Zhixing shifted his gaze to Xue Shufan in the center of the dance floor and said, “She’s changed dance partners again. Aren’t you going to make a move?”
“Did you misunderstand?” Zhong Yang said. “Miss Xue is Old Pei’s childhood friend. She saved Old Pei’s life when they were kids.”
Wen Zhixing: “A life-saving grace?”
Zhong Yang recounted as if listing treasures, “When Old Pei was nine, he fell into the lake in the courtyard and almost drowned. Xue Shufan jumped into the lake without a second word and desperately dragged him ashore, saving his life.”
“A damsel saving a hero,” Wen Zhixing uttered four words after listening.
Pei Qingji smiled faintly, appearing refined and gentle.
Zhong Yang omitted many details in his storytelling, such as the fact that if the guards hadn’t appeared, Xue Shufan and he would have died; or that Xue Shufan got water in her ear and lost her hearing for a period.
“The Young Master crippled that Zhao kid. Now the Zhao family is looking for a renowned doctor to treat him,” Wen Zhixing said, taking a sip of champagne.
“That grandson Zhao Lizheng has too long a reach. He’s asking for trouble and no one can save him,” Zhong Yang said. “That donkey kicks everything it doesn’t like, it’s so stupid. Who else could he have provoked but the Young Master?”
“Is Shi Yue coming today?” Pei Qingji asked.
“He’s busy.” Zhong Yang lit a cigarette and put it in his mouth. “The Old Master suddenly summoned the Young Master back to the Mansion Compound. It must be something important, so he won’t be able to come for a while.”
The Jin Family’s status as the power center of Sijiucheng was largely due to Old Master Jin. The scions of noble families of their generation grew up hearing about Old Master Jin’s glorious deeds, and they both respected and feared him, wanting to see him yet also being afraid to.
There was a moment of silence when this was mentioned.
Until Zhong Yang exclaimed with delight, “Li Mei is here!”
Under the clear moonlight, Lian Li stood on the courtyard steps, looking through the glass curtain wall to observe the situation in the hall.
More than a dozen young masters and ladies from prominent families were gathered, making it exceptionally lively and luxurious.
As she walked into the hall, a waiter carrying a wine tray asked if she wanted a drink.
She took a glass of champagne.
“Li Mei, what happened to your head?” Zhong Yang walked over and noticed a small area on Lian Li’s forehead with an unusual color.
“I bumped it accidentally, it’s nothing serious.” Lian Li’s head didn’t hurt anymore, but her skin tone hadn’t recovered yet.
“That’s good then.”
Zhong Yang enthusiastically told Lian Li about the fun things at the villa, mentioning that the hot springs here were good and she could try them.
As Lian Li listened attentively, a questioning voice suddenly reached her ears: “Lian Li?”
