Chapter 29: Good Temper Doesn’t Mean I Won’t Get Angry!
(Busy with farm work today, just finished updating now, really sorry.)
“Stop right there, spare me, I don’t want to suddenly have a big son out of nowhere.”
Cao Weida rolled his eyes speechlessly. To tell the truth, this dog thing was really shameless; whatever he said just came out of his mouth.
Still calling me big son? I don’t count on you to take care of me in old age and send me off.
Besides, I’m Cao Weida, a transmigrator after all, with a system backing me up—can’t I outlive you?
Isn’t this cursing me?
He really wanted to smash an electric lamp bulb into this bastard’s face!
He waved his hand impatiently. “Alright, alright, if you can’t flatter, don’t. It’s embarrassingly awkward.”
“You just want to make money, right? Fine, who let you be my neighbor? I still have to give you this bit of face.”
“Come closer, let me tell you something.”
Making money isn’t embarrassing. He’s not helping for free; instead, he’s taking the bigger share, so no loss either way.
After whispering a few words in his ear, Wang Ba Ye’s eyes immediately lit up. “Oh my, so that’s how it is, Cao’er—no, Cao Ye, you’re really going to strike it rich!”
“Thanks to Cao Ye for giving me this chance to make money. Just watch me—this Tianqiao area, there’s nothing Wang Ba Ye doesn’t know. I’ll go find it for you right now!”
With that, he ran off, immediately full of excited spirit.
Watching the departing figure, Cao Weida’s gaze deepened. Was Wang Ba Ye really a special agent of the Military Statistics Bureau?
If he really was, then he was hidden way too well.
If not, then in the TV series, how to explain Wang Ba Ye’s seemingly casual but everywhere sarcastic remarks about the Communist Party?
Could he really just be a petty local thug with a small mind?
Unable to figure it out, Cao Weida slapped his forehead. He amused himself. “I’m really going crazy, thinking about this crap for what!”
“That’s something for the Communist Party’s underground party to consider after Beiping’s liberation. Why should I worry about it?”
Just as he was about to continue enjoying the noon sunlight, Third Sister-in-law came in carrying a vegetable basket, smiling warmly.
“Cao’er, finally seeing you.”
“Third Sister-in-law, come in quick, please sit, please sit.” After all, she was the matchmaker who helped him find a girl—uh, introduce a match. Cao Weida still gave her plenty of face.
Third Sister-in-law sat down with a cheerful smile. “I mentioned it to Master Duo last night. Did he talk to you today?”
“He did, he did. Third Sister-in-law is capable. See, I’ve already sent someone to keep an eye out for a house. Should have news in a couple days.”
“That’s good. You hurry it up. Once she comes through the door, you treat her well. She’s had a hard life too. You bringing her out counts as saving her from hardship.”
Cao Weida felt a bit weird inside. Clearly it was to temper a beauty and bring her back to fill the concubine spot, but unexpectedly it turned into saving someone from hardship. Who to reason with?
He was understanding too. He said “wait a moment” and went back into the house.
When he came out again, he had an extra money bag in hand, jingling crisply as he walked.
He handed over the money bag. “This is the promised one hundred silver dollars. Third Sister-in-law, be a good person to the end and trouble you to run the errand again.”
Third Sister-in-law took the money bag. Cao Weida clearly saw her pupils tremble slightly, then brighten faintly, like a cat staring at a moving fish shadow.
But soon, she retracted that greedy look.
Cao Weida nodded silently. If there was just a suitable platform, with Third Sister-in-law’s sharpness, she definitely could make something of herself.
He pulled another much deflated money bag from his pocket and handed it over. “Third Sister-in-law running back and forth isn’t easy. Not much money, don’t mind it.”
Third Sister-in-law’s smile grew warmer. She didn’t pretend politely and took it casually. After all her busywork this long, wasn’t one reason exactly this?
Everyone knew it tacitly. Too much pretense would just be tacky.
“No wonder they say Cao’er you’re made for big things. Alright, then Third Sister-in-law will shamelessly accept it.”
The next morning, Duomen and Cao Weida went to the police station to report in.
Just at the entrance, they saw a man in his twenties with red cried-out eyes, yelling to get into the police station, but violently pushed out by the gate guard, who pointed at his nose and told him to scram or be locked up.
“Easy, easy, what’s going on?” Duomen hurried over to stop it.
The gate guard looked sullen: “Someone died at home. Our people inspected; it’s suicide. He insists it’s murder. Came to the police station entrance at dawn making a fuss.”
“I said it’s not suicide! My dad was really killed! I heard noise in the courtyard last night. I clearly saw a black shadow flipping over the wall and leaving!”
The gate guard immediately got impatient. “Who knows if your ears and eyes are bad. We said the police station’s verdict is suicide. Go die wherever you came from—scram!”
Cao Weida: “.”
Good grief. Someone died at home, suspects murder, even saw someone flip over the wall, and it’s still ruled suicide?
How was it ruled?
Isn’t this talking nonsense with eyes open!
“Xiao Zhou, is there some misunderstanding here?” Duomen wanted to speak up for the victim’s family, but Xiao Zhou shot him down without face:
“Master Duo, the scene is our jurisdiction area. Don’t bother with this matter. Our team has been up early and late for days, tired enough. Can you not add trouble?”
Duomen opened his mouth, but in the end could only shake his head with a bitter smile. “Fine, I spoke too much.”
Looking at the man again, he was shaking with anger all over, face flushed red, faintly showing signs of exploding.
Cao Weida hurried to hold him back, turned to the gate guard. “Xiao Zhou, I understand your hardship. How about this: Master Duo and I will run this errand for you.”
“Mind your own business?” Xiao Zhou sneered. “Our area’s matter, who are you to interfere? Get lost!”
Cao Weida’s eyes narrowed slightly, forehead throbbing a bit. Getting chewed out like this first thing in the morning—he wasn’t a saint; how could he not get angry?
“Buddy, no need for such a big temper, right? Ate firecrackers this morning?”
“What do you care what I ate? Do whatever you want.”
Xiao Zhou spat disdainfully, not even looking straight. He was Sang Liuji’s man, used to being arrogant and overbearing following Sang Liuji.
Though Duomen was patrol captain, he never took him seriously.
No wonder they say good people get bullied. Duomen was too honest usually; facing a rogue like Xiao Zhou, he wasn’t feared at all.
If he mouthed off at others, even Duomen himself, it would be brushed off with a smile. But as Cao Weida’s boss, and key treating him as one of his own, this faceless behavior completely enraged Duomen.
Duomen just had a good temper, but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t get angry!
The usual smile vanished from his face, replaced by iron-blue.
Stern-faced Duomen still had some deterrence. “Xiao Zhou, leave some room in dealings, so you can meet again later.”
“We’re all colleagues at the same police station, seeing each other up and down. This is too much, right?”
Xiao Zhou wanted to retort, but facing Duomen’s cold gaze, he suddenly froze.
What was this?
How did the usual nice guy Duomen suddenly get so tough?
The harsh words at the tip of his tongue suddenly wouldn’t come out. The scene stalemated awkwardly.
Just then, Sang Liuji’s arrival broke the deadlock. “Yo, Master Duo, what’s with the big fire first thing in the morning? Who provoked you? Takes some skill to piss you off.”
Sang Liuji came over hands behind back, striding bow-legged. Clearly backing up Xiao Zhou.
