Chapter 4: Reborn
Before Nie Qiu could even think, she saw the woman bring a doctor and a nurse into the hospital room. The doctor, as usual, asked Nie Qiu a few questions, such as where she felt uncomfortable, and then the nurse took Nie Qiu’s temperature before preparing to leave.
Nie Qiu frowned, “Excuse me.”
The doctor and nurse stopped and looked at Nie Qiu, and even the woman looked at Nie Qiu with confusion. Nie Qiu took a deep breath, “Excuse me, where is this? Who… am I?”
This is too strange! This is really too strange! How could this happen? How could it be like this? She is Nie Qiu! She is a university professor! She is a professor with dual degrees in education research and law! How could she be here? What happened in between? Why is she here?
Upon hearing Nie Qiu’s questions, the middle-aged woman, the doctor, and the nurse were all startled. The doctor quickly stepped forward and asked as if to confirm, “You… don’t remember who you are?”
Nie Qiu shook her head, then nodded, and then shook her head again. Who is she? Of course, she is Nie Qiu! But whose body is this? Why is she here?
The nurse became a little anxious, “Do you remember or not?”
Nie Qiu shook her head blankly. Seeing this, the middle-aged woman standing by the hospital bed began to cry. With teary eyes, she looked at the doctor and said softly, “Doctor… what is going on?”
The doctor frowned and stood up straight, “We checked the injuries on your body when you were admitted. The child has been in a coma for so long, her brain should also be injured. Let’s take the child for a scan first!”
“Scan what?”
The doctor frowned and said to the middle-aged woman, “First, let’s check her blood pressure and blood routine. If these are normal, we’ll need to get a brain CT scan.”
“Then… how much does a CT scan cost?” the middle-aged woman asked somewhat nervously.
The doctor thought for a moment and said, “For blood pressure and blood routine, come to my office tomorrow morning without eating breakfast, as you need to be fasting for the examination. The CT scan also requires a fasting state. There are five items in total. If you want to proceed with the checks, come to my office to get the slips. The total cost will be around one thousand to two thousand.”
Nie Qiu saw the middle-aged woman’s shocked expression and knew that this woman likely couldn’t afford the money. She sighed and rubbed her temples, “I just can’t remember what happened before. I don’t think any checks are necessary.” She also knew that many hospitals profited from medical equipment checks. She thought that since things were already like this, the checks might not reveal anything.
The nurse frowned, “How can that be? If you can’t remember what happened before, it means you have amnesia. Amnesia means there’s a problem with your head. If there’s a problem, of course, we need to check it to treat it. Once you’re treated, you’ll be able to remember what happened before. If we don’t treat it, what if there’s another issue?”
Nie Qiu remained silent, instead looking at the middle-aged woman who had started to cry silently, covering her face.
Seeing all three looking at her, the woman quickly forced a smile and said, “Okay, we’ll do the checks.”
The doctor and nurse nodded with satisfaction and turned to leave. The middle-aged woman turned around, sat on the edge of the bed, gently stroked Nie Qiu’s head, and forced a smile, “Qiu Qiu, don’t worry, Mom will have the doctor cure you. Don’t worry.”
Nie Qiu was stunned. Such a touch felt like it came from her dreams. The gentle hand, the loving gaze, the caring expression – everything made Nie Qiu feel deeply attached.
