Chapter 19: Impulse Toward Death
Yu Lianyun frowned tightly as she finished looking at those photos of bizarre death scenes. Even though she was a “battle-hardened” forensic doctor, she couldn’t help but shiver with fear after seeing those extremely anomalous death methods.
It was hard to imagine how a person could squeeze themselves into a five-centimeter crack. The corpse dug out from the crack was no longer human-shaped; simply put, it was pulverized bits of meat.
Additionally, there was a deceased person who died in a head-back running posture crashing into a door. No one knew how he managed it, but he had somehow smashed his head to the back of his skull, with the back of his head pressed against his spine. This once again demonstrated the flexibility of human skin, as the deceased’s neck wasn’t excessively broken.
The death methods of the other two were relatively normal. They bit into electrical wires to cut off the power to the mechanism…
“Speaking of which, aren’t you guys going a bit overboard?” After finishing the death photos, Yu Lianyun paused for a moment and said with a mix of anger and amusement, “Although my main job is a forensic doctor, I’m a patient now, wrapped up like a mummy. You still want me to help with the autopsy.”
“Hey, the capable should do more work, and besides, you’re the professional.” He Jia’an said with a cheerful laugh, showing the typical goofy leader face of every smiling tiger.
“I’m basically on vacation right now.”
“Sigh, as long as you haven’t left the work area, it doesn’t count.”
Yu Lianyun was somewhat speechless, but she knew she couldn’t resist, and she didn’t have the thick skin of this bald captain. She could only help take a look. However, she also had some small revenge of her own: she would make He Jia’an hold the tablet computer for her, then pretend to look carefully and take a long time…
He Jia’an held it until his arms ached, but there wasn’t the slightest resentment on his face; he kept smiling cheerfully.
But one sentence from Yu Lianyun almost made He Jia’an’s mentality collapse.
“Nothing much to say. Besides dying in an eerie way, the corpse’s body shows no abnormalities on the surface.” Yu Lianyun analyzed and concluded calmly, “Of course, for more precise data, dissection analysis is necessary. Just by looking, that’s about it.”
After speaking, Yu Lianyun looked at He Jia’an doubtfully: “By the way, the Mysterious Group isn’t so poor that it doesn’t even have a forensic doctor, right?”
“We do have one, but Captain He wants first-hand information.” Wei Jiang explained, “And Captain He is in a hurry; he can’t wait.”
“Why?” Yu Lianyun asked curiously. Since the organization had a forensic doctor, and one trained by the organization at that, they should be more professional than her, who had only dissected normal corpses. What was there to be impatient about?
“Captain He feels a lot of self-blame. After all, those four people were indirectly saved by him, and he had even told them they were fine. But then last night, this happened.” Li Yingqi sighed softly.
He Jia’an frowned, displeased: “Don’t say those unnecessary things.”
Hearing this, Yu Lianyun couldn’t help but look at He Jia’an with renewed respect. She hadn’t expected this bald man to surprisingly have a sense of responsibility. Well, his sense of responsibility was probably as high as his hairline.
“Has there been any change in the corpse?” Yu Lianyun asked from another angle. “This incident doesn’t seem simple. If the corpse still has that kind of power, I shouldn’t have had a chance to escape alive back then.”
“You actually got it right. There has indeed been a new change with the corpse.” He Jia’an operated the tablet and opened another photo.
Yu Lianyun strained to look up at the photo. It was still that beautiful young girl in the red wedding dress, with the familiar appearance. The difference was that a vibrant lycoris radiata had grown in the girl’s mouth, fresh red as blood and full of vitality.
While Yu Lianyun was looking at the photo, He Jia’an explained beside her: “This was captured by high-definition camera this morning. There was no flower yesterday; it suddenly grew out of the corpse’s mouth last night at midnight.”
With that, He Jia’an asked in return: “Are you sure you and your father dissected the corpse? Was there really no seed or anything like that in her body?”
“No.” Yu Lianyun was very certain. She had checked very carefully during the corpse examination, and she had confidence in her inspection analysis, just like a coder has confidence in their code product.
However, Yu Lianyun added: “But that’s all based on the premise that my father and I weren’t affected by hallucinations during the forensic examination process. After all, after we finished examining the corpse, it returned to its original state, like a monster that respawns periodically in a game. If the corpse didn’t have strong self-healing regeneration ability, then it’s very likely that my father and I were under hallucination, and the examination results aren’t absolutely reliable.”
He Jia’an crossed his arms in thought for a long time, then said to Yu Lianyun: “Alright, no matter what, you’re now the sole survivor who didn’t die after contacting the corpse. From now on, the three of us will take turns watching over you every day. There will also be other organization companions guarding outside the hospital room. If anything happens, as soon as there’s the slightest anomalous commotion from you, they’ll rush in immediately to help.”
Yu Lianyun understood and nodded in agreement.
“We plan to transfer the corpse, but as you know, it’s very dangerous. Transferring it from the containment room upstairs to another shelter—if anything goes wrong during this, it will cost lives. So it needs some preparation time. At least tonight, it will stay here for another day.” He Jia’an comforted Yu Lianyun, saying, “Therefore, tonight will be a sleepless night for you. If I’m not mistaken, everything you felt last night at the same time slot will happen again.”
Yu Lianyun felt numb all over. As long as the corpse issue wasn’t resolved, she would forever be a miserable victim, with the dimensional life lurking menacingly at her.
The daytime passed quickly. To recover from her injuries faster, Yu Lianyun rested more. Almost as soon as she closed and opened her eyes, it switched from day to night, and the person accompanying her changed from Li Yingqi to Wei Jiang, who was on night watch duty.
Wei Jiang was a man who looked burly and fierce on the outside but was actually somewhat honest and upright. Having him by her side made Yu Lianyun feel at ease inwardly.
“How long have I slept?” Yu Lianyun asked Wei Jiang curiously, who was sitting beside her.
Wei Jiang glanced at the time on his mobile phone and said: “It’s 9:55 now. You’ve slept almost four or five hours. You ate lunch and took a nap, then slept until now.”
“That should be about right.” Yu Lianyun said. She had noted that the impulse arose when the clock on the table showed exactly ten o’clock.
The two then kept their eyes open, looking at each other silently, quietly waiting in the hospital room for ten o’clock to arrive.
Suddenly, Yu Lianyun felt her limbs twitch violently, causing her face to contort in pain. It was her broken limbs trying to move again, and that wasn’t behavior from her brain.
This impulse was even stronger!
