Chapter 12: I Want Mister To Protect Me
Miss Meng was grabbed by the wrist and struggled fiercely, “Let go of me, I said I don’t gamble, why are you forcing me?”
The man dragged her to the gambling table, his actions rough, “Who here doesn’t give me some face? I’ve given you an opportunity. Since you won’t drink with me, then we can only play cards.”
Miss Meng’s lower abdomen bumped into the edge of the table, causing her nerves to tremble in pain.
Bystanders saw it but didn’t dare intervene, not wanting to wade into this muddy water.
The man leisurely shuffled and dealt the cards, “Pick a set of cards.”
Miss Meng clutched her stomach, slowly straightening her body, her voice hoarse, “I’m not picking.”
“Don’t be ungrateful…”
Before he finished speaking, he was suddenly kicked hard by someone and sent flying several meters.
Mark looked down at him coldly, “I think you’re asking for death.”
The man was in so much pain he lost his voice, as if his bones had shifted, “Mister Mark…”
His face showed shock and fear.
The others were also stunned by the scene.
Everyone knew that Mark was Mister Kerwin’s personal special assistant, and his every word and action represented Mister Kerwin’s meaning.
What exactly was the relationship between this girl and Mister Kerwin?
Mark walked to Miss Meng’s side and asked about the situation, “Miss Meng, are you alright?”
“I’m fine.” The taut string in Miss Meng’s mind finally relaxed.
The man on the ground was scared pale and apologized repeatedly, “Sorry, I didn’t know she was Mister Kerwin’s person. I won’t dare do it again…”
“No matter whose person she is, that’s no reason for you to bully her with your power.” Mark ordered the bodyguards to throw him out, so he wouldn’t be an eyesore here.
The scene was quickly cleared up.
Mark kindly reminded her, “Miss Meng, it’s not safe for you to come here alone.”
Miss Meng pleaded, “Can you take me to see Mister Pei? I have something to say to him.”
“The mister is busy.”
“I can wait, no matter how long!”
Mark didn’t dare make the decision on his own and first took her to another empty private room.
The waiter prepared tea and snacks and a fruit platter and brought them over.
Miss Meng took a sip of water and leaned back on the sofa to catch her breath.
She had no confidence in her heart whether Mister Pei would give her an opportunity.
Last time he asked what she wanted from him.
She wanted power to back her up, to protect herself and help her older sister escape the Meng Family, nothing more.
After waiting half an hour, there was a knock at the door.
Miss Meng came back to her senses, got up, and went to open the door.
Mark stood at the doorway, “Miss Meng, come with me.”
“Thank you.” Miss Meng slung her bag over her shoulder and followed him.
It wasn’t far, just a few steps.
Mark stopped in front of the door and lightly knocked three times.
A magnetic low voice came from inside, “Come in.”
Mark pushed open the door and gestured, “Miss Meng, the mister is inside.”
Miss Meng tightened her grip on the shoulder strap and stepped inside.
The private room door closed.
Straight ahead in her line of sight, the man wore a black silk shirt with a loose collar, his collarbone outline half-exposed, lounging there lazily with his long legs crossed, one hand resting on the sofa back.
He looked more noble and sexy in black than in white, unrestrained and uninhibited.
Miss Meng approached and greeted softly, “Mister Pei.”
“Looking for me?” Pei Yuzhou raised his eyes, his gaze indifferent, “How did you know I was here?”
Miss Meng didn’t dare lie, “My friend saw you downstairs.”
Pei Yuzhou’s thin lips moved, “Didn’t learn your lesson from last time?”
She still dared to come here.
“I…” Miss Meng was speechless.
He reached for the cigar on the coffee table and clipped the cap.
Miss Meng remembered something and looked down into her bag to pull out a lighter, “Mister Pei, your lighter. You left it in your coat last time.”
Pei Yuzhou glanced at her, “It’s just a lighter. Is it worth all this trouble?”
Miss Meng pursed her lips and boldly stepped forward to light it for him, “The mister’s belongings should be returned to their owner.”
She leaned in close, the unique jasmine freshness from a girl’s body brushing his nose, different from pungent perfume, more like body scent.
Pei Yuzhou watched her slide the wheel inexpertly.
A small flame flickered up, firelight reflected in his eyes, swaying lightly.
Miss Meng held her breath in concentration, lit his cigar for him, then slightly stepped back, brewing her words in her heart.
“Mister Pei, about the question you asked me last time…” She paused, clenched her palm, and said bluntly: “I admire the mister and want the mister to protect me.”
As soon as the words were out, her heart pounded chaotically, full of anxiety.
Pei Yuzhou took a drag on the cigar, slowly exhaling smoke, his adam’s apple rolling, “What makes you think I’d protect you?”
Their eyes met.
Gazed at by his deep dark eyes, Miss Meng’s heart drummed like thunder, “The mister shouldn’t dislike me, right? Otherwise, you wouldn’t have helped me twice.”
He neither confirmed nor denied.
“Since you don’t dislike me, why not give me an opportunity?” Miss Meng spoke straightforwardly, “I want to stay by the mister’s side. If one day the mister no longer needs me, I absolutely won’t cling to you.”
She was very clear about the gap between them and wouldn’t fantasize about anything else.
Pei Yuzhou narrowed his eyes slightly, “You sure have guts.”
Miss Meng said softly: “I’m actually very timid.”
If she weren’t pushed to the end of her rope, she wouldn’t dare say these things in front of him.
Pei Yuzhou tapped ash from his cigar, “Mountaintop racing, nightclub drinking, and now you even dare to casually enter a casino.”
“That wasn’t a nightclub.” Miss Meng refuted, not wanting him to misunderstand, “That day I went with friends and didn’t know beforehand it was that kind of bar.”
Pei Yuzhou asked deliberately: “What kind of bar?”
“The kind… with handsome guys dancing.” Miss Meng said euphemistically, then added, “But I wasn’t interested at all. Their figures were average, definitely not as good as Mister Pei’s.”
Pei Yuzhou’s lip corner twitched up, “You’ve seen them?”
Miss Meng shut her mouth, “…”
The more said, the more mistakes.
After a moment of silence, she brought the topic back, “What I said earlier, can you consider it?”
“Depends on your ability.” Pei Yuzhou’s tone remained lukewarm.
He indeed didn’t dislike this girl, but that was merely not disliking her.
Miss Meng blinked.
What did that mean? Was he agreeing to give her an opportunity to approach?
She moved her lips to speak but was interrupted by a knock at the door.
Pei Yuzhou said casually, “Come in.”
Mark pushed open the door, “Mister, Mister Arthur has arrived.”
Pei Yuzhou nodded.
Miss Meng thought about whether she should excuse herself, but had no chance to speak.
The visitor was an elderly gentleman who looked over sixty, with graying temples and wrinkles piled at the corners of his eyes.
The other man had trouble walking and leaned on a cane, “Kerwin, long time no see.”
Pei Yuzhou rose slowly, “Mister Arthur, please sit.”
Miss Meng quietly moved to the corner, minimizing her presence.
Arthur’s gaze swept over her and he walked to the sofa to sit, “Who’s this pretty young lady?”
“I’m Mister Kerwin’s friend.” After replying, Miss Meng glanced at Pei Yuzhou.
He said nothing.
Arthur smiled meaningfully.
A woman who could appear by Kerwin’s side was probably not just a friend.
