Chapter 16: Why Are You So Hard To Pursue
The server removed the bottle opener and pulled out the cork, gripped the bottle body, and tilted the bottle mouth.
Red wine poured into the glass, and the rich wine aroma spread in the air.
Meng Shuyou picked up the wine glass and took a sip.
Slight bitterness on the tip of her tongue, followed by a sweet aftertaste.
The taste of fruity aroma intertwined with oak scent activated her taste buds, with a lingering aftertaste.
She hadn’t tasted enough and drank a few more sips until the glass was empty.
Probably due to her emotions acting up, the alcohol hit her, and she forgot that her alcohol tolerance wasn’t good.
Normally, three glasses would get her drunk, five would knock her out; she never dared to drink more outside, but today she greedily drank nearly half a bottle.
Her cheeks flushed slightly from the alcohol, and her vision gradually blurred.
She hugged the wine bottle, preparing to drink another glass.
Before the wine could pour out, the bottle was suddenly snatched away by someone.
“Stop drinking.”
A figure appeared above her head.
Meng Shuyou looked up discontentedly, her gaze blurry, unable to see the face clearly, but the voice was very familiar.
The voice was low, clear, and magnetic.
She murmured softly, “Mister Pei…”
Pei Yuzhou frowned, “If your alcohol tolerance is poor, don’t drink.”
Meng Shuyou rubbed her eyes and looked around, “Where’s the girl you were dining with? Why is she gone?”
Pei Yuzhou: “She left.”
“How many girls did you invite to play with?”
“…”
“You clearly promised me.” Meng Shuyou gazed at him with drunken, hazy eyes, “Did you promise others too?”
Pei Yuzhou didn’t want to waste words on a drunkard, “You’re drunk, go back to your room.”
“I’m not drunk.” Meng Shuyou’s voice was slurred, her nasal tone carrying an indescribable grievance, “I waited for you so long, yet you were dining with someone else.”
She muttered under her breath, “Scumbag.”
“…”
–
Pei Yuzhou only learned upon arriving at the restaurant that there was an extra person at this meal.
Peter looked apologetic, “I’m really sorry, Kerwin, my sister insisted on coming along for dinner. You don’t mind, right?”
Pei Yuzhou’s expression was calm as he sat down composedly, “Please carry on.”
Peter gave a look, “Daisy, greet Mister Kerwin.”
The girl quickly spoke, “Hello, Mister Kerwin, my name is Daisy.”
Pei Yuzhou nodded lightly.
Peter’s tone was quite helpless, “My sister was spoiled at home, I can’t do anything about her; I wish she’d get married soon to save her from causing trouble for me at home.”
“Brother, what are you saying.” Daisy said coquettishly, “I don’t like any of the boys you introduced me to.”
Peter chuckled, “Then tell me what kind you like.”
Daisy shyly lowered her eyes, her gaze stealing glances at the opposite side intentionally or not.
Her intentions were obvious.
She had never seen such a handsome man; not only was his appearance and figure one in a million, but his aura and presence were unmatched, with a noble demeanor that came naturally.
She admired the strong and appreciated outstanding men.
But no matter how she hinted, the other party showed no reaction.
Pei Yuzhou didn’t speak throughout.
Peter had to change the topic and talk about something else.
Daisy awkwardly lowered her head and drank water.
The dishes were served one after another.
Midway through the meal, Peter’s mobile phone rang; he looked at Pei Yuzhou, “Sorry, I need to take this call outside; you two eat first.”
Once he left, the atmosphere became completely quiet.
Daisy put down her tableware and tried to make conversation, “Mister Kerwin, are you free tomorrow? I heard there’s a zoo here, we…”
“Very busy.” Pei Yuzhou was concise.
Daisy refused to give up, “Then when are you free? Can we have afternoon tea together, or go boating on the lake?”
He was even more direct, “Don’t waste time on me.”
“Is there something not good enough about me?” Daisy felt frustrated; from childhood to now, she never lacked suitors, and this was the first time she experienced refusal.
Pei Yuzhou leaned back relaxedly, “Those who appreciate you will naturally see your merits, but that person isn’t me.”
With that said, Daisy understood.
–
Pei Yuzhou never explained himself to anyone; he called two servers to send Meng Shuyou back to her room.
“I don’t want to; I haven’t had enough.” She refused to go and reached to grab the red wine back, “This wine is so good; can I have another bottle? I want to bring some back for Winnie and Mia to try.”
The server came to support her, “Miss, we’ll take you back to rest.”
Meng Shuyou shook her head, “Don’t touch me; I’m not leaving.”
Pei Yuzhou said in a deep voice, “If you won’t leave, I’ll throw you out.”
“Go ahead and throw me.” Meng Shuyou, drunk, feared nothing and went all out, “No one cares about me anyway…”
A sudden surge of emotion welled up in her chest; as she spoke, tears welled up in her eyes, “If you throw me out, I won’t have to go back to that hateful home.”
Pei Yuzhou stood by the table watching her; tears fell like a broken string, her eyes drenched.
He never knew that a girl’s tears could be so abundant.
Meng Shuyou didn’t want to cry, but she couldn’t control it.
Her emotions had been suppressed too long and needed an outlet.
Pei Yuzhou was at a loss with her; she was here with his tacit approval, so he couldn’t just leave her, “What will it take for you to leave?”
Meng Shuyou wiped the tears from her face, her throat choked, “You carry me.”
Pei Yuzhou’s temple twitched, “Don’t push your luck.”
Meng Shuyou turned her head in a temper, “Then don’t mind me.”
Pei Yuzhou laughed in exasperation.
Clearly, threats didn’t work on her.
“I heard boa constrictors come out at night; you stay here alone, just in time to fill its belly.”
After saying that, he turned and walked away.
Meng Shuyou glanced outside the window; it was pitch black in the distance, as if something could emerge from the water at any moment.
Bloody scenes from horror movies flashed through her mind.
Just then, a gust of wind blew, and the water surface rippled.
Meng Shuyou was scared sober a bit and ran off, dropping the wine bottle.
In her haste, her leg bumped into a chair, and she stumbled to the ground, “It hurts…”
Pei Yuzhou stopped and turned back.
After a standoff of ten seconds or so, he finally compromised.
Meng Shuyou’s leg hurt numbly; before she could react, her body suddenly lifted into the air, held in someone’s arms.
A fresh cedar scent after snow entered her nose, warm and pleasant.
She instinctively nuzzled into the man’s embrace.
Pei Yuzhou warned her, “Keep still, or I’ll drop you in the water.”
“Don’t.” Meng Shuyou tightly grabbed his shirt and instantly behaved.
Through the thin fabric, their body heat pressed together.
His embrace was broad and solid, full of sense of security.
Sleepiness overtook Meng Shuyou, and her eyelids drooped.
The rustling of leaves brushed past her ear.
Half-drunk and half-awake, she murmured, “Pei Yuzhou…”
“Your name sounds so nice.”
“Your voice sounds nice too.”
“You’re good-looking too.”
“Everything about you is good.”
“The only flaw is…”
“You don’t like me.”
“Why are you so hard to pursue…”
Pei Yuzhou ignored her mumbling.
Her soft cheek pressed against his chest, her warm breath seeping through the shirt onto his skin, stirring a faint itch.
His adam’s apple rolled slowly, and his pace quickened.
Back at the villa, he set her down, “We’re here; go in by yourself.”
Meng Shuyou was dazed, supporting herself on his arm to barely stand steady.
Pei Yuzhou waited for her to recover, “Let go.”
“I won’t.” Meng Shuyou hugged his arm even tighter, “If I let go, you’ll leave.”
