Chapter 37:
Meng Shuyou’s heart skipped a beat, and she looked into the private room following the voice, suddenly meeting that gloomy and heavy gaze.
Her heartbeat paused in that instant, her mind going blank.
“Mister Pei…”
She didn’t know there were people in the private room, let alone that Pei Yuzhou was there.
Glass shattered all over the floor, splashing everywhere.
Under the dim lighting, red liquid trickled from his palm, dripping onto the floor, starkly red.
Ellen turned back, asking with concern, “Mister Kerwin, are you alright?”
The man took a tissue to wipe his hand, his voice betraying no emotion, “It seems I’ve interrupted your marriage talks.”
Ellen quickly denied it, “No, we’ve disturbed you. Sorry.”
“You two.” Pei Yuzhou’s lip twitched, his voice devoid of warmth, “Quite intimate.”
Meng Shuyou lost her reaction, standing there woodenly.
Ellen noticed something off, “Do you know Mister Kerwin?”
Meng Shuyou parted her lips, “I…”
Before the words could come out, the man interrupted in a deep voice, “We don’t know each other.”
Pei Yuzhou wiped his hand clean, veins bulging on the back of his hand, tossed the tissue ball aside casually, and got up to walk out.
Meng Shuyou’s eyes were dazed, and in her view, his figure drew closer and closer.
As he passed by her side, Pei Yuzhou paused slightly, his tone laced with sarcasm, “What, willing to sell yourself out for your goal, hooking up with anyone will do?”
Meng Shuyou’s eyelashes trembled, murmuring lowly, “It’s not like that…”
She had no choice.
Pei Yuzhou didn’t spare her a glance and walked straight past her to leave.
The footsteps faded into the distance.
Meng Shuyou’s eyes stung, the corners reddening faintly.
Ellen was puzzled, “What’s going on here?”
He didn’t understand Chinese and had no idea what Kerwin said at the end.
Meng Shuyou felt muddled, her heart gripped tightly as if by a hand.
Her mobile phone rang at that moment.
She slowly lowered her head to look—it was an unfamiliar number.
“Sorry, I need to take this call.” She stepped aside and pressed the answer button.
It was Aunt Xue’s voice, “Yaoyao, Xiao Man has woken up. Don’t worry, she’s fine. I’ll take better care of her from now on.”
Meng Shuyou let out a long breath, “Good.”
As long as she’s fine.
Aunt Xue cautioned, “Don’t come back home. I heard the Meng Family wants you back for the engagement. They’ve arranged it with the Xu Family.”
Meng Shuyou knew, but she also feared Meng Yan might find ways to harm Older Sister again.
“Meng Yan took my mobile phone. I might not be able to contact you often for a while.” Aunt Xue was risking her job now, using someone else’s phone to call Meng Shuyou.
Though the Meng Family employed her, it was Meng Shuyou who had sold her own jewelry back then to help pay off part of her debt, allowing her and her daughter to live peacefully these years.
“Good, I understand. If anything happens to Older Sister, please make sure to tell me.” Meng Shuyou’s voice was hoarse.
Aunt Xue agreed, “Mm, definitely. That’s it then, I’m hanging up.”
After the call, Meng Shuyou calmed down.
Marriage was no trifling matter and couldn’t be treated as a transaction; one misstep, and there’d be no regrets to swallow.
Ellen was still waiting for her, “Miss Elara, shouldn’t you give me an explanation?”
Meng Shuyou apologized to him, “Sorry, Mister Ellen. I was too impulsive today. I came to you without thinking it through. I’m very sorry.”
“Is this your answer to me?” Ellen frowned displeasedly, “What’s your relationship with Mister Kerwin?”
Meng Shuyou said lowly, “We really have no relationship.”
They didn’t before, and there won’t be any in the future.
Mister Pei probably despised her completely by now.
‘What, willing to sell yourself out for your goal, hooking up with anyone will do?’ The cold, heavy voice still echoed in her ears.
