Chapter 41: Until He Comes To See Me
Miss Meng called the police on her mobile phone and explained the situation.
She waited roadside for twenty minutes before police arrived at the scene to make a record, while reminding her, “This road hasn’t been safe lately. It’s best not to go out alone at night.”
“Mm.” Miss Meng rarely came to the west side and didn’t know the security here was so poor.
After registering the information, the police said: “We’ll contact you if there’s any news.”
Miss Meng nodded, “Okay, thank you.”
She knew in her heart that she didn’t know when it would come, and she definitely had to reapply for documents.
The police asked if she needed any other help when Mister Zhao’s car arrived just in time.
“My friend is here, I’ll head back first.” With that, Miss Meng walked toward the Porsche roadside.
She pulled open the rear car door, and Mister Zhao was lazily leaning back in the seat.
Miss Meng greeted him and got in the car, “Mister Zhao, sorry to trouble you to make this trip.”
Mister Zhao smiled faintly, “No problem, I happened to be nearby.”
The car door closed, the driver released the brake and stepped on the accelerator to speed up.
“Are you injured?” he asked.
Miss Meng glanced at her arm, “Just a little abrasion.”
“There are plenty of robbery cases in Chicago; they used to be concentrated in the south side, but unexpectedly they’ve spread to the west side.” Mister Zhao said: “You’re a girl, and so pretty too—it’s not safe for you to be out alone anywhere.”
Miss Meng had learned her lesson; today’s incident was an accident, and she rarely went out at night usually, or only with friends.
“Why didn’t you call Brother Zhou?” Mister Zhao couldn’t hold back his gossiping heart, “Did you two have a conflict?”
Was it a conflict? Miss Meng wasn’t sure either.
What qualification did she have to have a conflict with him.
“I… it doesn’t seem quite appropriate to call him.”
Mister Zhao was puzzled, “What’s inappropriate about it?”
Miss Meng fiddled with her phone case, “Doesn’t he have a marriage alliance partner now? Of course it’s not appropriate.”
“Because of that?” Mister Zhao couldn’t help but chuckle softly, “Didn’t you know he refused? No one can force him to do something he doesn’t want to.”
Miss Meng’s fingertip paused.
So he had refused.
“Anyway, we’ve known each other for so many years, and you’re the first to get special treatment from him.” Mister Zhao told her the truth, “If it were anyone else, they couldn’t even get close to him.”
Miss Meng’s heart was in a mess.
That time she accidentally kissed him, and he clearly felt disgust.
But before that, he had helped her time and again, so it shouldn’t be dislike.
“Is Mister Pei still in Chicago?”
Mister Zhao looked down at his mobile phone, “Yeah, he should be back in Manhattan in a couple days.”
Miss Meng’s lips pressed into a tight line, and she was silent for a moment, “Can you tell me where he lives?”
Mister Zhao glanced sideways at her, “Why don’t you ask him yourself?”
“There’s a little misunderstanding between us.”
No matter what, she wanted to explain clearly what happened last time.
Mister Zhao hesitated for a moment, “Don’t say it was me who told you.”
What if he made Mister Pei angry—he didn’t want to take responsibility for that.
“Mm, I won’t.”
They arrived at the school, and the car pulled to a stop.
Miss Meng thanked him again, “Thank you, Mister Zhao, for sending me back.”
Mister Zhao didn’t take it to heart, “No big deal.”
Miss Meng got out of the car, went to the dormitory, and got a new key from the dorm aunt.
Back in the dormitory, she simply cleaned the wound, took a shower, and went to bed.
Exhausted from all the fuss, she fell asleep soon after.
The next day she got up very early.
She had to go out to the embassy to replace her relevant documents.
Lately, due to some policy influence, the document process was very strict; all submitted materials underwent layer upon layer of review. It took half a day just to complete the procedures, and it would take seven to fifteen working days for the documents to be ready.
She could only explain the situation to the professor and personally apologize to Madam Kasa when the time came.
It was already four in the afternoon when she came out of the embassy.
She walked aimlessly along the street.
The bustle of the crowd around her mingled with the sound of traffic, all a fast-paced melody.
Passing a small park, she found a bench to sit down and rest for a bit, then opened her mobile phone and instinctively tapped into the chat with Mister Pei.
The last message was from May 16th—over half a month without contact.
She stared at the screen in a daze.
Recalling how angry he had been that day, she began to shrink back again.
His icy gaze sent chills down her spine.
A news push appeared at the top of her mobile phone: “Hels Group subsidiary medical company hits new market value high; core business covers high-end medical medicine and equipment for heart, nerves, etc. Current executive president Kerwin Hers is committed to promoting medical technology innovation and market expansion…”
Miss Meng then realized that America’s largest medical company was also his.
She turned off her mobile phone and ran off in the opposite direction.
If she didn’t go find Mister Pei today, there would be no opportunity.
–
Around six in the evening, the sky was overcast, the clouds thick and heavy, with a chill in the air.
In the study room, Mister Pei had just ended an online senior management meeting and was leaning on the sofa flipping through documents.
The mobile phone on the desk kept vibrating.
Mark picked it up for him, “Sir, it’s Miss Meng’s call.”
Mister Pei didn’t look up, his voice low and cold, “Hang up.”
Mark didn’t know what had happened between them and could only do as told.
It wasn’t long after hanging up that she called again.
“Maybe it’s something urgent.”
Mister Pei lifted his eyelids and glanced at him, “What, are you concerned about her?”
Mark didn’t dare, “That was a slip of the tongue.”
Several muffled claps of thunder sounded outside the window, and the light gradually dimmed.
After being hung up twice, the phone didn’t ring again.
Mark received a message, “Sir, the airplane has been arranged. It might rain heavily later—should we head to the airport early?”
Mister Pei lightly acknowledged with a faint “mm.”
“Then I’ll have the driver prepare the car.” Mark went to the balcony to make the call.
As soon as he dialed the number, he unexpectedly spotted the girl downstairs.
Miss Meng stood alone outside the iron gate railing, head down staring at her mobile phone, her expression somewhat forlorn, her figure slight.
Mark turned back to the study room and cautiously spoke up: “Sir, Miss Meng is at the doorway.”
Mister Pei’s gaze stalled for an instant, his expression unchanged, “Tell her to go back.”
Outside, the wind blew fiercely, branches and leaves swaying violently, tree shadows dancing.
Miss Meng looked up at the darkening sky; nightfall was pressing down, brewing a heavy rain.
It seemed like it always rained whenever she was in a bad mood.
She had waited here for almost an hour, called him but he didn’t answer.
There were lights on upstairs, so he should be home.
After a moment, the villa door opened, and someone came out.
Miss Meng looked up at the sound and quickly said: “Mark, Mister Pei is home, right?”
Mark walked toward the iron gate, “Miss Meng, you should go back. Sir won’t see you.”
Miss Meng gripped the railing, “I really have something to say to him. It’s very important.”
She was so anxious she was a bit incoherent.
Mark knew Mister Pei too well, “Sir’s decisions are hard to change.”
Miss Meng refused to leave, “Then I’ll wait here until he sees me.”
Mark couldn’t persuade her and had no choice but to turn back to the villa.
Ten minutes later, raindrops fell, pouring down densely on her.
The Cullinan slowly drove up and stopped at the main gate.
Mister Pei’s car—he was going out?
After a moment, a familiar figure emerged from inside, as poised and upright as ever.
He stood under the eaves.
Through the rain curtain, their gazes met.
