Chapter 64:
“It was all an accident. We drank too much that night, and the atmosphere got to that point.” Winnie didn’t take it seriously. “Adults, something happening isn’t very normal?”
Meng Shuyou asked: “So what is your relationship now?”
“A you-willing-I-willing relationship, I guess.” Winnie said clearly: “Dating is out of the question. A Young Master Zhao like that, I can’t climb that high. What if one day he wants a marriage alliance? I don’t want to wait around to be dumped, it’d be so embarrassing.”
She liked him, but that didn’t mean they had to be together.
Meng Shuyou respected her.
Only she herself could make decisions about feelings.
It was already two in the morning domestic time. Winnie couldn’t stay up anymore and yawned repeatedly. “I’m not chatting anymore, I’m going to sleep. So sleepy.”
“Mm, go ahead.”
The video call ended. Meng Shuyou put away her mobile phone, hugged the little goat, and walked back. After a few steps, she suddenly stepped on something slippery.
Looking down, a green-brown long snake was raising its head and flicking its tongue at her.
Meng Shuyou immediately turned pale with fright and let out a scream. “Ah—”
A stinging pain came from her calf. Her legs went weak, and she retreated two steps before falling to the ground.
Several servants hurried over upon hearing the sound. “Miss Elara, are you okay?”
Meng Shuyou’s mind went blank, her whole body overtaken by fear, temporary loss of speech.
The servants saw the snake on the ground and jumped in fright too. “How could there be a snake?”
Another male servant quickly used the shovel in his hand to get rid of the snake.
“Don’t touch my baby!” A voice came out to stop them.
The boy ran over and coiled the snake around his arm, stroking its head to soothe it.
The servants all knew him. “Young Master Lucas, is this your snake?”
The boy nodded. “Yeah, this is my new pet reptile. Very expensive.”
Everyone knew he was the notorious playboy young master in their circle, who liked to prank people. His family spoiled him rotten, fueling his mischievous nature.
The female servant squatted beside Meng Shuyou to check her condition. “Miss Elara, you were bitten. I’ll go call a doctor to treat the wound.”
Lucas smiled. “Relax, no poison. No need for a doctor.”
His attitude was casual, without the slightest apology.
Meng Shuyou came back to herself somewhat and stood up with the servants’ help, questioning him. “Why don’t you watch your pet properly?”
“You must have stepped on it, that’s why it attacked. It’s usually very docile. Can only say you were unlucky.” Lucas walked forward two steps and reached out to scare her. “What, do you want it to bite you again?”
The snake writhed on his arm, its pupils pitch black, staring in a way that sent chills down the spine.
Meng Shuyou had a stress reaction from fright. “Get away from me!”
Lucas sneered. “Girls are just such cowards. I already said no poison.”
–
On the back mountain golf course, several gentlemen were chatting idly on the putting green.
The man in the black-and-white striped polo shirt spoke up. “Mister Kerwin, as long as you’re willing to cooperate with me, I’m confident we can take 50% of the European medical equipment market in the near future.”
Pei Yuzhou tugged at his lips. “That’s a pretty big pie. Why don’t you first tell me what chips you have that are worth me investing billions of US dollars.”
“My team has recently developed cardiovascular equipment and robotic surgery control systems, waiting for clinical trials to pass…”
Before he finished speaking, a servant hurried over. “Mister Kerwin, Miss Elara was bitten by a snake.”
Pei Yuzhou frowned. “Where did the snake come from?”
The servant answered truthfully. “Young Master Lucas’s pet reptile, non-venomous, but Miss Elara was frightened.”
Pei Yuzhou took off his gloves. “Where is she?”
“In the lounge by the farm.”
“Lead the way.”
“Okay.”
The gentlemen behind exchanged glances. What person was worth Mister Kerwin dropping everything to rush over?
Here, the family doctor had just finished treating Meng Shuyou’s wound. The snake was non-venomous, but the wound still needed disinfection and cleaning to avoid infection.
The doctor instructed. “Observe it for the next two days. If nausea, rash, or difficulty breathing occurs, it might be an allergic reaction. Need to go to the hospital promptly.”
Lucas scoffed. “So delicate. My family’s servants have been bitten too, nothing happened.”
Footsteps sounded from the doorway.
A noble figure strode in.
Lucas turned his head, somewhat surprised. “Cousin, why are you here?”
Pei Yuzhou’s gaze skipped over him and went straight to Meng Shuyou’s side. “Where were you bitten?”
“Calf.” She pulled up her half-length skirt a bit.
Pei Yuzhou half-squatted down and gripped her ankle to check.
Two obvious red dots at the wound.
Lucas was dumbfounded, opening his mouth in surprise.
This girl was cousin’s person?
Pei Yuzhou stood up, his cold gaze landing on him, voice low. “You brought the snake here?”
A chill rose on Lucas’s back. “Cousin, I didn’t do it on purpose…”
Meng Shuyou interrupted him. “Mister Pei, he did it on purpose.”
His intentions exposed, Lucas glared at her. “Hey, don’t talk nonsense!”
With Pei Yuzhou there, Meng Shuyou wasn’t afraid of him at all. “You still want to threaten me.”
“I didn’t.” Lucas defended himself. “Cousin, how could I control whether the snake bites or not? She stepped on my snake, that’s why she got bitten.”
Meng Shuyou shot back. “Then why did you let the snake out? Didn’t you know snakes bite people?”
Lucas argued righteously. “There’s no one at the farm. Can’t I let it out for some air? Who knew you’d step on it.”
“Done arguing?” Pei Yuzhou’s tone was cold.
Lucas immediately shut up.
Pei Yuzhou eyed him. “Can’t handle your pet, then don’t keep it. Will you throw it away yourself, or should I get someone to do it for you?”
“No, cousin.” Lucas softened. “I was wrong. I’ll watch it properly from now on.”
He’d gone to great lengths to get this pet reptile and wanted to carry it with him every day. How could he throw it away?
Pei Yuzhou’s gaze was indifferent. “I don’t say things twice.”
“But I…”
“Lucas, what’s going on?” An elegantly dressed noblewoman hurried in, her high heels clicking on the wooden floor.
Lucas saw his savior. “Mommy, Little Black accidentally bit someone. Cousin wants me to throw it away. Save my Little Black quick.”
The noblewoman’s head ached at the sight. “You got me in trouble again.”
But he was her son, spoiled since childhood. She couldn’t ignore him.
She spoke up to plead. “Kerwin, for my sake, don’t hold it against your cousin. He’s just playful as usual, still young and immature. Please be tolerant.”
She’d used this line for over a decade. Relying on being from the Herschel Family and married to an Italian tycoon, everyone had to give her some face.
Pei Yuzhou gave a low chuckle. “Not sure if he’ll still be a child at thirty-eight.”
The noblewoman’s expression stiffened slightly.
He changed tack. “But since you’ve spoken up, I won’t hold it against him today.”
Lucas’s suspended heart settled.
Pei Yuzhou bent down, picked up Meng Shuyou, and carried her out.
Once they were far away, Lucas patted his chest. “Scared me to death.”
The noblewoman swatted his arm. “Told you to restrain yourself a bit. Next time I can’t save you either.”
Lucas was annoyed. “How was I supposed to know that girl was cousin’s person.”
The noblewoman murmured softly: “Looks like your cousin really cares about her.”
