Chapter 66:
–
Dinner ended, and heavy rain started outside, with thunder rumbling and lightning flashing across the window.
Meng Shuyou felt a heaviness in her chest, as if something heavy was pressing down on her.
The thunderstorm sounds disturbed her mind.
Pei Yuzhou walked her to the doorway.
Meng Shuyou stopped and asked, “Has Zeus gone back?”
“In the room.”
“Then can I go to your room and play with it?”
She didn’t want to stay alone in the room.
Pei Yuzhou raised his eyebrow, “Aren’t you afraid of it?”
“I’m not afraid if you’re there.” Meng Shuyou said softly: “I won’t disturb you while handling work.”
Pei Yuzhou nodded, “Let’s go.”
His room was right next door.
Meng Shuyou followed behind him through the door.
Zeus heard the noise and trotted over happily, rubbing against Pei Yuzhou’s feet.
There wasn’t a hint of ferocity.
Pei Yuzhou bent down and touched its head, “You did well today.”
Zeus wagged its tail at him for a reward.
Pei Yuzhou walked further in, “There’s canned beef on the coffee table, feed it some.”
Meng Shuyou replied, “Okay.”
“I have a video conference to attend, you stay here by yourself.”
“Mm.”
Pei Yuzhou went into the study room to work.
Meng Shuyou walked to the sofa, picked up the canned food on the coffee table and opened it, “Zeus, come eat.”
It ran over immediately upon smelling the scent.
Meng Shuyou poured the beef into its special bowl, “Eat up.”
Zeus lay on the ground, licking it up eagerly.
Meng Shuyou gently touched its ears, feeling the fluffy fur, “You were so amazing today.”
Zeus looked up at her, tail wagging, with a somewhat proud little expression.
No wonder it was the dog raised by Mister Pei.
The rain didn’t stop, pattering against the glass window, thunder rumbling intermittently with occasional booms.
After feeding Zeus, Meng Shuyou turned on the television, leaned on the sofa, and found a movie to watch.
She planned to wait until the rain lightened before going back to her room to sleep, but the movie was boring, and she dozed off in a daze.
Her breathing gradually became even.
After finishing the meeting, Pei Yuzhou came out and saw both the person and the dog asleep.
The television volume was low, quiet and peaceful.
Meng Shuyou was sleeping soundly; she didn’t even wake when carried to the bed.
She slept especially soundly this time.
In the morning when she woke, her eyes bleary, she vaguely sensed someone beside her, her body enveloped in a heat source.
She pried open her eyelids, her gaze landing on pale white skin, the pajama collar loose and open, further up were clear collarbone lines and the prominent adam’s apple.
Was she still dreaming? Otherwise, how could she be in Pei Yuzhou’s arms?
One of his hands was pillowed under her neck, the other draped behind her waist, holding her captive.
The overly intimate sleeping position made her heartbeat echo in her ears.
Meng Shuyou woke up fully, held her breath, and carefully shifted backward a bit.
As soon as she moved, the arm across her waist suddenly tightened.
A low, husky voice came from above her head, “What are you squirming for?”
Meng Shuyou leaned against his chest, her cheeks slightly warm, “I… I want to get up…”
Pei Yuzhou held her, “Sleep a bit more.”
Warm breath enveloped her; Meng Shuyou felt uneasy and gently pushed him, “You’re holding too tight.”
Pei Yuzhou lifted his eyelids slightly, his voice lazy, “Last night you kept burrowing into my arms—why didn’t you complain about being held too tight then?”
Meng Shuyou looked bewildered; when had she burrowed into his arms?
“Afraid of thunder?” Pei Yuzhou asked.
Meng Shuyou was surprised, “How did you know?”
She had never told anyone that she disliked thunderstorm days; every time she heard thunder, her chest felt blocked, and she couldn’t sleep well.
Pei Yuzhou pinched the soft flesh at her waist, “As soon as thunder struck outside, you stuck to me—you wouldn’t let go even if I pushed.”
