Chapter 65: Wang Family Funeral Home
After entering the elevator, both of them were somewhat silent.
Lu Jinzhao had nothing to say, while Xiao Ping was purely nervous.
He looked up at the light for a moment, then nervously stared at the elevator indicator light, then lowered his head to look at the trolley beside him, afraid that something unusual would appear anywhere.
Fortunately, perhaps because the mission had just begun, or they hadn’t violated any taboos yet, at least the elevator hadn’t had any problems so far.
They smoothly arrived at the basement, where the temperature was really quite low, but still within the range acceptable to the human body.
Connected to the elevator entrance was a long corridor, with the elevator at the far left of the corridor, and the morgue requiring them to walk straight down this long corridor.
“Who designed this?” Xiao Ping couldn’t help but complain.
If they encountered something in the morgue and wanted to escape, there was only this one straight corridor, without even a single obstructing object, and no place to hide.
Too unfriendly!
Moreover, this kind of place always made people feel a bit of discomfort involuntarily. The not-so-spacious corridor, limited height, white walls, plus being in the basement, just standing here gave an indescribable sense of oppression.
Xiao Ping just wanted to quickly deliver the corpse inside and leave this place.
When he turned his head to look at his teammate, under this pale light, as soon as he turned, his gaze fell on Lu Jinzhao’s pale skin and dark eyes, and an inexplicable chill rushed straight to the top of his head, almost making him think he had seen a ghost.
His brain processed for a second before he remembered, no, this is my teammate, not a ghost.
He hesitated for a moment, but still didn’t say out loud something like, “Little Lu, next time just put on some simple makeup to add some color to your face before getting on the train.”
Too rude.
Pushing the trolley, he began to worry again: how to handle the night shift?
If there was a power outage during a moment of high mental tension, and Lu Jinzhao was still quietly following behind like this, if he wasn’t careful and turned around to see her, it would really be no different from seeing a ghost.
The wheels of the trolley made sounds on the ground, and the sound of the wheels rolling accompanied their footsteps echoing in the quiet underground corridor. The only thing Xiao Ping was grateful for was that the lights overhead weren’t flickering.
After pushing the cart for about two minutes, they arrived at the morgue entrance.
Mainly because pushing the trolley was too slow. He calculated that running from the morgue entrance to the elevator and stairs would take only about 15 seconds.
Thinking about it, Xiao Ping couldn’t help but turn his head to look behind him again, then at his teammate.
It was really too quiet.
Xiao Ping really hoped Lu Jinzhao would speak up and make some sound, anything would do. At least with another person’s voice, the atmosphere wouldn’t be so tense and oppressive.
But Lu Jinzhao clearly hadn’t received his brain waves.
She was completely unaware of how nervous her teammate was at this moment.
After all, in Lu Jinzhao’s eyes, the journey so far had been fairly calm, with no ominous changes around, and the corpse on the trolley lying obediently without any sign of resurrection.
Although the environment made her vigilant, it was far from the point of tense random thoughts.
She had experienced three platform missions, and maintaining calmness and reason in this situation was already very simple.
In the quiet atmosphere, the trolley arrived at the morgue entrance.
“We’re here.” Xiao Ping couldn’t help but speak up.
There were no security guards stationed at the morgue; opening the door required a key, and both of them had one.
Insert the key, turn it, then twist the door handle.
The heavy metal door was slowly pushed open, and cold air spread out from the door crack, quickly wrapping around both of them.
This time, Xiao Ping and Lu Jinzhao clearly felt that this temperature was absolutely not suitable for normal humans to be exposed to for long periods.
A bit of doubt arose in Lu Jinzhao’s mind. Logically, the morgue shouldn’t be this cold inside, after all, there was still a layer of refrigerators, which should be the ones at this temperature, right?
Was there a cold air leak?
For example, one of the refrigerators not closed properly?
The door was fully opened, and the layout inside the morgue came into view of both of them.
It looked quite ordinary, not much different from the morgues seen in movies.
The number of refrigerators might be a bit more, but considering this was a large-scale funeral home, that was understandable.
Xiao Ping was still looking for an empty refrigerator based on what the young man had said, but Lu Jinzhao beside him had already left the spot, her gaze shuttling between these refrigerators, seemingly looking for something else.
“What’s wrong?” Xiao Ping turned his head and saw her appearance, unable to hold back from asking.
Lu Jinzhao didn’t reply immediately, but walked deeper inside, spending some time to look around the entire morgue.
Xiao Ping was a bit nervous, slowly following behind her. Since Lu Jinzhao didn’t respond, he could only wildly guess, worrying if she had discovered something ominous.
When Lu Jinzhao walked in front of a row of refrigerators again, her footsteps suddenly stopped.
“There.” She raised her finger and pointed.
Xiao Ping’s line of sight followed her finger, and the next second, he felt his body stiffen somewhat.
That one—a refrigerator was open, the body drawer pulled out, but the corpse lying on it was nowhere to be seen.
Xiao Ping only felt a chill on his back, not knowing if it was because it was too cold here or a physiological reaction to seeing this scene.
“Maybe the previous staff forgot to close it?”
Is that so?
“What about these?” She looked at the ground again.
Below the body drawer, there was clearly a trail of footprints extending toward the morgue entrance!
Although not very clear, it was still discernible.
Xiao Ping’s complexion turned ashen; he knew he couldn’t deceive himself anymore.
“What to do?”
He asked Lu Jinzhao, and also himself. While speaking, Xiao Ping’s brain was rapidly turning, trying to find a feasible method.
Lu Jinzhao shook her head: “Nothing to do.”
This trail of footprints led toward outside the morgue, meaning that if it was really as she thought, there had once been a corpse that opened the refrigerator by itself, walked out from inside, and left the morgue.
So now, where would it be?
What was it going to do?
No one knew.
“Let’s finish the task at hand first.”
For their own sake, the most important thing right now was to quickly put the newly delivered corpse into a refrigerator and close it.
“What if it’s still here?”
As Xiao Ping said it out loud, his own arms broke out in goosebumps because of his words.
He didn’t understand why Lu Jinzhao could be so calm, even continuing to “work.”
He suspiciously looked around, as if that “resurrected” corpse was really hiding nearby, waiting. As long as they were slightly inattentive, even just a blink of an eye, a long-rotted corpse might appear before him.
