Chapter 66: Wang Family Funeral Home
“Not here.”
Lu Jinzhao said affirmatively.
At least, if it hadn’t crawled into another body drawer by itself, it really wasn’t here.
Otherwise, why had she just walked around here? Did she have more than normal curiosity about the morgue?
“Come help.”
She didn’t want to lift this corpse onto the body drawer by herself.
As for where that departed corpse had gone, it was probably still in the funeral home.
It was useless to start being afraid now. What needed to be done was to collect more clues, and before breaking any rules, find as many conditions as possible that were favorable for survival.
“.Okay.”
Infected by Lu Jinzhao’s calmness, Xiao Ping’s tension also eased a bit.
For some reason, the words spoken by this girl who was a bit younger than him inexplicably gave people a very reliable feeling.
The two of them worked together to put the corpse into an empty body drawer. Lu Jinzhao noticed that even when they moved the corpse, the bell tied to its ankle didn’t ring.
“It seems this bell is quite special.”
She even wondered if the bell would only ring when the corpse moved by itself?
“Alright, let’s get out of here quickly? It’s freezing.” After Xiao Ping closed the body drawer door and checked it again, he urged.
Lu Jinzhao nodded. After the two left the morgue, they specially double-checked that the metal door was securely closed.
Back in the corridor, Xiao Ping seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.
However, as the two walked toward the elevator, Lu Jinzhao seemed to hear a sound from behind.
It was a faint, muffled sound, like something hitting metal sheet.
She suddenly turned back.
The morgue door behind her stood quietly at the end of the corridor.
“What’s wrong?” Xiao Ping asked with a frown.
He hadn’t heard anything.
“.Nothing.”
Lu Jinzhao wasn’t sure if she had misheard, but she leaned toward no.
Perhaps that sound was too faint, and their footsteps had masked it, so Xiao Ping hadn’t heard it, but she was more sensitive and hadn’t missed that subtle movement.
The two tacitly chose not to take the elevator and instead took the stairs.
After leaving the morgue, the temperature warmed up, the coldness dissipated, and even the atmosphere became relaxed.
However, when Xiao Ping turned to look at his teammate, he found her expression more serious than it had been in the morgue.
“Are you really okay?” he pressed.
Lu Jinzhao just frowned slightly, as if pondering something: “The metal sheet in the morgue, isn’t it only in the cold storage?”
“.Seems like it. What’s wrong?”
“Tell the people patrolling tonight to be careful and try not to go into the morgue,” Lu Jinzhao said.
“I just seemed to hear some movement inside.”
She didn’t hide it. Hearing this, Xiao Ping only felt a chill rise again in his body that had just warmed up.
“Got it.”
It was only the first day, and supernatural events were already showing signs. Xiao Ping began to doubt whether they could really survive three days in this place.
The sky was gradually darkening.
Shift change time arrived. Meng Ning and Chen Hai carefully checked their items, confirmed no oversights, encouraged each other, and then prepared to start today’s mission.
“We need to start patrolling at 11 o’clock. The route is like this, covering pretty much the entire funeral home.”
This naturally included the underground morgue.
“For the morgue, we’ll just glance at the door and not go in.”
Though afraid, on the first day, the two planned to follow the young man’s instructions.
Although the train mission didn’t strictly require night patrols, based on the experience provided by seniors, in this kind of mission with “specific identities” assigned, if they didn’t do what that identity should do, they would absolutely be judged as “shirking duties” by the natives and fired, which meant certain death.
Work had to be done; they couldn’t avoid it.
But they could be a bit lenient within the scope.
For example, their job was to patrol, but it didn’t say they had to inspect every corner meticulously.
As long as they showed up at the place, that counted as patrolling.
“If anything seems off, we leave immediately,” Chen Hai instructed.
Meng Ning nodded. She looked a bit scared, and Chen Hai wasn’t at ease either.
The two got ready and set off on the patrol route.
The funeral home was exceptionally quiet even during the day, but at least there was the sound of the incinerator running. At night, there was not a single sound here.
Even though the lights hadn’t failed, the black-and-white buildings of the funeral home still looked eerie and terrifying under the lights.
The road that was full of private cars during the day now had only a few left, making the place seem empty and desolate.
The two walked along the road with flashlights, first circling the most familiar service hall.
It was too late, so naturally no one was here, only the lights were still on.
“Good thing the lights are on here.”
The service hall was no different from daytime, which made the two feel a bit better.
They continued patrolling.
The streetlights outside the funeral home buildings seemed old, with small and dim lighting range, surroundings pitch black, but fortunately they had flashlights.
The two came to the mourning hall along the way.
The mourning hall had no lights on, pitch black inside.
The mourning hall was large, with many chairs below and audio equipment and band seats on stage, probably for playing dirges.
Meng Ning didn’t go in, just stood at the door and swept the inside with her flashlight.
The flashlight beam swept over the seats quickly, but even so, Meng Ning didn’t miss that in an instant, the light seemed to illuminate an abrupt back shadow amidst the many empty seats.
Her complexion changed abruptly, wanting to say something but unable to make a sound.
“What’s wrong?” Chen Hai noticed something off about her.
“Inside… there seems to be something.” Hearing her teammate’s voice, Meng Ning finally spoke with a slight tremble.
Her words made Chen Hai’s complexion turn bad too.
Meng Ning’s flashlight beam was aimed at the ground, and Chen Hai, he didn’t dare to raise his hand to shine the light into the mourning hall.
He was afraid that if there really was something inside, his light shining over would reveal a face that didn’t belong to a living person.
“Let’s go, we leave now.”
He had no intention of investigating, hurriedly pulling Meng Ning back, not caring if she had seen wrong.
The mourning hall door was closed, cold sweat broke out on both their backs, no one spoke again, only rapid breathing came from beside them.
“It’s okay, it’s okay, maybe I saw wrong,” Meng Ning said softly.
“Let’s continue.” Chen Hai forced himself to perk up.
“Only the morgue and crematorium left, it’ll be over soon, just hold on a bit more.”
Meng Ning kept encouraging too.
In fear, the two could only rely on each other’s thin words for a bit of comfort.
The patrol continued.
Under highly tense spirits, even a simple patrol became extremely difficult.
Fortunately, there was nothing unusual in the crematorium.
The only thing left was the morgue.
