Chapter 109: Aunt Wang Is Beaten By Liang Wenfei
After breakfast, Liancheng hurried to the restroom.
All along, she had a superpower: everything that happened ultimately exceeded her capabilities.
When she was given progesterone injections for a threatened miscarriage, Bai Ying instructed her to pay close attention to her own reactions. At that time, she was eager to go abroad and couldn’t spare the attention.
But as the days wore on, it was like a stretched string, coiling and tangling, accumulating more and more. The clues were now impossible to ignore.
She had genuinely lost her desire to eat.
Without a sense of taste, without feeling hungry, the food, once swallowed, felt like a ton of iron in her stomach. It was bloating and heavy, making her restless.
However, Liancheng dared not vomit, nor did she dare not eat.
It wasn’t just to hide it from Liang Chaosu, but also for her daughter; the fetus needed nourishment to develop.
Liancheng turned on the faucet, leaning on the sink with one hand while the other scooped up water to splash on her face.
The door behind her opened.
The restroom air was stuffy, devoid of the sour smell of vomit. She turned the faucet to the cold water setting, her fingertips tapping against the stream. Most of the water, collected at her fingertips, changed direction, while a small portion splashed out, dampening the clothes on her lower abdomen.
Liang Chaosu frowned and strode over. He gripped her with his right arm and, with slight force, lifted Liancheng off the ground, repositioning her.
In her peripheral vision, she saw his other hand violently turn off the faucet.
“I remember warning you countless times not to touch cold water.”
Liancheng looked up at him from his embrace, “I’m infertile; touching cold water has no effect.”
Liang Chaosu’s gaze lingered on her face. His eyes, which she could never see through, remained dark and deep. Liancheng saw only her own small reflection within them, with no other ripple.
In the past, Liancheng always thought he was neurotic, his temper worse than a ghost. If something was wrong, he would leave with a scowl in the morning and, if he wasn’t scowling upon his return, he would certainly vent his frustrations in bed.
Unstable emotions, petty and narrow-minded, such an annoying man.
Now, Liancheng actually began to miss that neurotic man from before. At least then, she was experienced and always knew how to deal with him.
Unlike now, he had become unpredictable, shrouded in mist, silently infiltrating beneath her skin, probing her heart.
A strong woman knows when to yield and when to stand firm; in dangerous situations, one must bow their head.
Liancheng softened, “I saw a jewelry store in town earlier. Do you still want to buy the ring?”
A subtle smile flickered at the corner of Liang Chaosu’s eyes, spreading to his gaze. “You want to go out?”
“You’ve been busy with work these past few years and rarely relax. Iceland has the aurora, you can go whale watching, ice cave trekking, and see blue ice caves.” Her expression was slow and earnest. “If… you’re not planning to go back for a while.”
The beginning was just a prelude; the last sentence was her true objective.
Liang Chaosu gazed at her.
Liancheng thought she wouldn’t get an answer this time either, but the man’s lips suddenly curved into a smile, slowly spreading across his entire face. “Didn’t you and Shen Lichuan have an agreement that you’d only watch the aurora with him in this lifetime?”
Liancheng was slightly stunned. She had many agreements with Shen Lichuan, to go to the heavens and seas, to travel to Mars. When she was spirited and ambitious, she even said she would take Shen Lichuan back to ancient times to conquer the world, making him prime minister by day and having him crawl on the dragon bed at night.
But the past could not be pursued.
Fortunately, the annoying man from before had returned.
Liancheng asked, “Then will you watch it?”
She was getting impatient, the upward curve of her eyes bending, like a little fox that had just reached its nose and immediately darted onto its face.
Liang Chaosu’s voice held a hint of laughter. “I won’t watch.”
Liancheng paused for a second, pushed him away, and left.
Liang Chaosu spread his arms to pull her back, enclosing her between his arms and chest, tightly wrapping her as he walked out. “I won’t watch today; today we’re buying rings.”
……………………
After New Year’s Day, Nan Province had clear skies.
Shen Lichuan arrived at the Shen family home at nine in the morning to pick up Liang Wenfei for her NT scan at the hospital.
Actually, it was supposed to be her twelve-week check-up a week ago, but Liancheng was preparing to leave then, and he didn’t have the mental capacity to deal with Liang Wenfei. Mother Shen, worried about Liang Chaosu’s blind dates, also couldn’t spare the time.
Since returning to the Liang family, Liang Wenfei had always been pampered and cherished. Suddenly, for an important prenatal check-up, no one was with her, and she threw a tantrum, delaying it until now.
Upon entering the living room, Liang Wenfei was making a huge scene on the second floor, with servants crowding the corridor. In the center of the crowd, Wang Yi’s voice could vaguely be heard, trembling and small, unintelligible.
Shen Lichuan frowned and rushed upstairs.
“You old hag, the Liang family gave you a job and paid you a salary. Your entire family is essentially supported by the Liang family’s money. You don’t have loyalty to the Liang family and still steal my things for that bitch Liancheng.”
Shen Lichuan pushed aside the servants.
Wang Yi was slumped on the ground, and Liang Wenfei, grabbing her hair, looked down at her. “I know a theft charge won’t put you in prison for long, but if I call the police now, your children will never be able to join the civil service. They will hate you to death. This is the consequence of helping that bitch; you’ll be old and alone, wandering the streets.”
Wang Yi trembled all over. “I didn’t steal it. Liancheng isn’t pregnant either, and that medicine has nothing to do with me.”
Sister Liu stood beside Liang Wenfei and immediately spoke up, “I’ve been cleaning the young lady’s room. Normally, the servants aren’t allowed in. Recently, only you brought soup and water in that night, and the place where the bowl was put happened to be where the young lady’s medicine was. And you’re still trying to argue.”
Shen Lichuan understood and stepped forward to separate Wang Yi. “I took it.”
Liang Wenfei was stunned.
Shen Lichuan glanced at Sister Liu. “I remember telling you to inform Fei Fei that my mother was overly concerned about Fei Fei and her grandson, so I took the medicine to reassure my mother.”
His gaze shifted to Liang Wenfei, and he held her hand. “Mother met a doctor abroad. I gave her the medicine so she could ask him personally and set her mind at ease.”
On other matters, Liang Wenfei would believe whatever Shen Lichuan said, but whenever it involved Liancheng, that vixen-like woman who could even win over her brother, she became extremely uneasy.
“Does Mother care about me that much?”
Shen Lichuan looked around. Servants were crowded, making a lot of noise. Father and Mother Liang were at home and couldn’t possibly not hear, yet they hadn’t appeared.
His heart sank.
He took out his phone decisively and dialed Mother Shen. “Regarding the medicine for Fei Fei’s pregnancy preservation you wanted tested last time, is there a result now? Can you be at ease?”
Mother Shen paused for a barely perceptible second. “I can be at ease. The Belidyn medicine is good, with few side effects and it doesn’t affect the fetus.”
Belidyn was the name of the pregnancy preservation medicine. Liang Wenfei was certain Father and Mother Shen had never asked about it, but it wasn’t impossible that Shen Lichuan had privately informed them.
Shen Lichuan saw her lingering doubt. “Your daughter-in-law doesn’t believe you care about her. She—”
Liang Wenfei’s expression changed drastically. She quickly lunged forward and snatched the phone. “Auntie, I don’t not believe you. Lichuan was just joking.”
Mother Shen’s voice, steady and smiling, said, “Still calling me Auntie? It seems I’ll need to prepare a very generous ‘change of address’ gift.”
Liang Wenfei’s voice became sweet as she continued chatting with Mother Shen.
Shen Lichuan had the servants retreat and helped Wang Yi up. “It’s my fault for coming late and startling you.”
Wang Yi was stiff and pale. Her face, under the lighting, seemed coated in wax. Her lips trembled, and she looked at him for a long time, unable to form coherent words, “Liancheng… Liancheng, that child, she’s good… she’s not pregnant.”
Shen Lichuan gritted his teeth and whispered, “I understand.”
He didn’t personally escort Wang Yi, watching her hobble down the stairs step by step.
Turning back, Liang Wenfei happened to hand him the phone. “Auntie, there’s something I need to tell you.”
Shen Lichuan took it. Mother Shen’s voice was angry. “Come back tonight and explain yourself.”
He grunted and hung up.
After entering the room, Liang Wenfei looked for the items needed for the prenatal check-up, while Shen Lichuan packed her bag item by item.
His drooping eyelashes were long and straight, casting dense shadows that obscured the chill in his eyes. “Don’t get so angry next time. Liancheng’s infertility is a fact. Every time you overthink things, the outcome is just you getting angry at yourself.”
