Chapter 36: Analysis
“This is the Missile Unit.”
The Brigade Commander of the Missile Unit, who was formulating the combat plan, received a phone call from the Operations Department.
“According to the Operations Department’s judgment, your side is eliminated from the exercise.”
The tone on the other end of the phone was flat and devoid of any emotion.
After receiving the phone call and being inexplicably told that his unit was eliminated from the exercise, the Brigade Commander of the Missile Unit couldn’t process it for a moment.
His unit hadn’t even fired a single missile, and they were already eliminated from the exercise. Who knows what happened!
“Leader, we were attacked, all missile vehicles are scrapped.”
Alright, the crux of the issue was found.
“Which Red Team unit did it?”
“Leader, it was the Great Merit Regiment’s Night Tiger Reconnaissance Company from the Red Team,” the Staff Officer said.
“Reconnaissance Company?”
This answer was unacceptable to the Brigade Commander; he had thought it was the enemy’s air force.
“What were our scouts and special forces doing, to let a company’s reconnaissance soldiers sneak in here.”
Seeing his combat Staff Officer looking a bit strange, the Brigade Commander asked: “What’s wrong? Speak your mind.”
The combat Staff Officer’s next words made the Brigade Commander widen his eyes, while he felt deep disappointment in his heart toward his own reconnaissance unit and his Guard Company.
The combat Staff Officer smiled wryly: “Leader, only two scouts came.”
“What! Just two people eliminated us?”
The Brigade Commander was a bit curious about these two Red Team scouts: “Come on, let’s go take a look outside.”
At this moment, the camp was in chaos like a pot of porridge, with the Missile Unit’s soldiers riled up, chasing after the disheveled-looking Xiao Zhuang and Chen Guotao.
They hadn’t even shown their faces yet, and as a result, they were eliminated from the exercise in such a disgraceful manner—who could accept that? The two Red Team scouts wanted to leave, so they had to give them some compensation.
For example, perform a show?
They couldn’t really beat them up, that would seriously violate discipline, and who would take the blame for the disciplinary action?
“What are you all doing!”
When the soldiers saw the Leader arrive, they all stood obediently in place.
The Missile Unit’s Brigade Commander walked up to Xiao Zhuang and Chen Guotao.
“You two are something else.”
“Leader, sorry, the exercise is actual combat!”
At the same time, Chen Guotao saluted the Leader.
The unexpected happened: right after Chen Guotao lowered his arm, blue smoke rose from the Brigade Commander’s head—he was eliminated.
Good grief, they even “whipped the corpse.”
In fact, Chang Ning had discussed it with Chen Guotao in advance. If they encountered the Commander, he would signal Chang Ning by saluting the Commander. Once Chang Ning locked onto the Commander, he could take the shot. The kills were secondary; Chang Ning mainly wanted to see if he could max out the sniper experience bar.
Looking at the experience bar with no movement at all, Chang Ning smiled wryly—the system’s loophole couldn’t be exploited; already eliminated Commanders couldn’t be double-killed.
The Brigade Commander’s face grew even darker; he tore off his armband: “So there were more than just you two.”
“Leader, we have to keep some backup, right?”
Chen Guotao smiled cautiously; whether they could pass smoothly depended on the man’s mood.
The Brigade Commander looked at the two Red Team scouts in front of him, fuming: “Do you know how much my brigade is worth? Ruined by you two scouts. Oh right, there are still some of your people outside.
We didn’t even fire a single missile!”
Chen Pai and Xiao Zhuang stood to the side without speaking.
Once the Brigade Commander vented his anger by shouting, he felt better. He couldn’t really take it out on two scouts; he had that much magnanimity.
“Guard Company Commander, major disciplinary action!”
Since Xiao Zhuang and they could sneak in silently, his Guard Company indeed had to take the blame.
“Alright, you guys hurry up and leave.”
The Brigade Commander waved his hand like shooing flies, telling Xiao Zhuang and Chen Guotao to get lost; seeing these two made his blood pressure rise subtly.
On another mountain road, the Blue Team Search Team’s off-road vehicle was searching everywhere for Red Team scouts. The Communicator in the back seat looked up: “Captain! Something happened!”
Gao Zhong Dui had a bad premonition; he took the headphones: “Speak! …What?”
Gao Zhong Dui put down the headphones and shouted: “Damn it! Turn around! Those two bastards hit our missile base!”
Gao Zhong Dui, who was combing the mountains for Red Team scouts, knew immediately upon receiving the news who did it—other than those two scouts who slipped through his fingers, probably no one dared to do that.
“Goodbye, Leader!”
Seeing that the Brigade Commander didn’t plan to make things difficult for them, Chen Guotao quickly took Xiao Zhuang and slipped away. Chang Ning had shot the Brigade Commander and already retreated to their pre-arranged rendezvous point; leaving a big question mark behind didn’t matter.
Not long after the three slipped away, Gao Zhong Dui led the Blue Team Search Team charging in like a whirlwind in mountain off-road vehicles.
Gao Zhong Dui and the special forces soldiers jumped off the vehicle, but it was all too late. Looking at the chaotic camp, he felt extremely depressed inside—why was he always one step slow.
“Gao Zhong Dui, your efficiency is lacking; the Red Team scouts just left.
If you chase now, maybe you can still catch up.”
Seeing Gao Zhong Dui arrive late like a post-mortem Zhuge Liang, the Missile Unit’s Brigade Commander mocked him. Now he looked at Gao Zhong Dui with disdain, extremely unhappy inside.
“Leader, can you tell me the direction they left in?”
The Leader mocked him, and Gao Zhong Dui had nothing to say; he really wasn’t in the right on this matter.
If wrong, admit it; if beaten, stand at attention. No one knew what he was thinking inside, but at least his attitude had to be correct.
The Brigade Commander had no mood to guess Gao Zhong Dui’s thoughts now. Seeing the man’s attitude, he didn’t harp on it, pointed out the direction Chen Guotao and they left in, then returned to his tent. Next, he still had to clean up his own mess and had no time for Gao Zhong Dui.
“Everyone, get in the vehicles, pursue those two Red Team scouts!”
Gao Zhong Dui led the search team and vanished in a puff of smoke. Next, he would keep staring at those two until he caught them or he himself was eliminated.
Whether the Missile Unit’s Brigade Commander forgot or did it on purpose, he didn’t tell Gao Zhong Dui that the ones who attacked them were more than two.
But this time, Gao Zhong Dui was more inclined to catch those two Red Team scouts who kept making him eat defeats.
In a dirt pit covered by weeds somewhere, Chang Ning and the other two gathered together to discuss the next action plan.
“Chang Ning, next do we try to cross the blockade back to our Red Team’s territory, or continue staying in the Blue Team’s heartland?”
Chen Guotao looked at Chang Ning sitting opposite; everyone knew the results of sabotaging the Blue Team’s Missile Unit just now, so he was willing to hear Chang Ning’s opinion.
“Even if we three successfully cross the Blue Team’s blockade and return to the Red Team frontline command post, what use would that be?
Don’t forget, the Night Tiger Reconnaissance Company now has only us three still active; what can so few people do when we go back?
We might even be made to stay put obediently.
If we continue operating in the Blue Team’s heartland, the difficulties ahead will be immense, because we’ve repeatedly provoked the Blue Team search team’s nerves, and they will keep a tight watch on us.
But this will draw most of their attention, providing cover for other reconnaissance units.”
Chang Ning didn’t rush to express his choice; instead, he analyzed for Chen Guotao and Xiao Zhuang the situations they would face with the two options.
