Chapter 33: Does Nan Nan Think He’s A Good Person?
“What? Mark?” Lin Shu exclaimed in surprise. He never expected Lin Xin to have such leisure time to make marks on the branches in the trap.
“Yeah, otherwise if I run into a shameless person like you, I wouldn’t be able to explain clearly!”
Actually, there was indeed no mark on that branch before, but just now Lin Xin had already manipulated water blades to scratch three horizontal and one vertical lines on every branch, and then used wood element ability to age those scratches.
Lin Zhou saw that after Lin Xin said this, Lin Shu’s face clearly became ugly, and he couldn’t help but believe a few points of Lin Xin’s words. He turned around and walked towards the trap.
“Lin Zhou!” Lin Shu subconsciously called out to him. Seeing his inquiring gaze, he swallowed and said in a low voice, “Be careful.”
Lin Zhou nodded, walked to the edge of the trap, found a place with not too many branches, and slowly slid down.
Seeing someone come down, the little deer was extremely frightened, dragging its broken leg backward, making whimpering sounds like “yoyo wuwu” from its mouth, with a pair of wet big eyes full of condensed tears.
Lin Zhou didn’t touch it, but walked to the side of the branches, bent down to look carefully, and sure enough saw an obvious man-made mark of three horizontal and one vertical lines on it. He checked several more branches and found the same mark on them, so he knew Lin Xin’s words were indeed true, and this trap was very likely dug by her.
“Xin Yatou, what do you plan to do with this little deer?” Lin Zhou looked at the terrified little deer and raised his head to ask Lin Xin.
“No problem, as long as it’s confirmed that this trap is indeed mine, I can handle the rest myself. It’s more important for you all to quickly send Brother Lin Shu down the mountain.” Lin Xin replied.
Lin Zhou thought it made sense upon hearing this, so with the help of others, he climbed up using hands and feet, nodded to everyone and said, “There are indeed marks on the branches.”
Lin Shu’s face became even uglier, with fine beads of sweat seeping from his forehead, not knowing if it was from pain or guilty conscience.
Everyone could see something was off with him, especially the old doctor, who showed visible disdain. Lin Zhou felt a bit reluctant and tried to smooth things over, “Brother Shu’s arm can’t be delayed any longer. Let’s hurry down the mountain first!”
The old doctor glanced at him, “Has it been made clear whose trap this is? If we just go down unclear like this, and then his mother makes a scene at Xin Yatou’s home, who will handle it?”
“This······” Lin Zhou choked, looked at Lin Shu beside him, “Brother Shu, speak up quickly! What mark is in this trap? If you say it right, it proves it’s yours. I saw that little deer inside just now, it’s still alive and definitely valuable. You can sell it for money to treat your injury.”
At this moment, Lin Shu not only hated Lin Xin for causing him to be bitten by a snake first and then break his bone, but also hated the old doctor for meddling. His plan just now was to take advantage of the chaos to go down the mountain first, then have his mother make a scene at Lin Xin’s home. Even if he couldn’t get the deer, he could at least extort some silver. But now it was all ruined.
He also hated Lin Zhou. If he had given him some hint secretly, he could have guessed the mark, and even with eight mouths, Lin Xin definitely couldn’t explain clearly.
“It’s not mine, this trap is not mine. Are you satisfied now? My arm hurts like hell right now, why not hurry and take me down the mountain.” After saying that, he turned to look at Lin Xin, “Since this trap is yours, then my arm was broken in your trap. You’ll have to pay for my treatment later.”
“Hehe,” Lin Xin sneered coldly, “You’re still thinking of extorting me? Then do you dare to say how exactly your arm was injured?”
“I······ Anyway, it was injured in your trap. If you don’t give money, I’ll go to your home and make a scene.” Lin Shu was completely shameless and unreasonable. He thought that at the time, besides him and Lin Xin’s siblings, there was no fourth person here. As long as he persisted that his injury happened in the trap, no one could do anything to him.
“Fine! Make a scene if you want, as long as you can bear the consequences.” After Lin Xin finished speaking, she ignored him, walked to the edge of the trap and jumped down, used vines to tie the little deer securely, then lightly leaped back up. With one hand she yanked hard, and the little deer was pulled up by her. Moreover, she did all this in front of everyone while holding Nan Nan.
The little deer’s front leg was broken. Lin Xin put it into the back basket, turned to Lin Shu and said, “I’m waiting for you to make a scene at my home.”
After saying that, she walked briskly to the old doctor, casually handed him a worn small bundle, “Thank you, Third Grandfather, for speaking up for us. This is a thank-you gift from Nan Nan and me to Third Grandfather.”
“Oh? A thank-you gift?” The old doctor was delighted, his beard twitching. He casually opened the bundle and looked down, then immediately wrapped it back up. Looking at Lin Xin, his gaze carried a bit of disapproval, “Xin Yatou, listen to Third Grandfather’s advice. This thing is too precious. You should take it back. If you don’t plan to sell it for money, keep it well. It might come in handy someday. Be good.”
Lin Xin smiled, “Third Grandfather, I found this in the mountain. It’s not precious. Besides, if I keep it here, I won’t preserve it properly, wouldn’t that be a waste? Third Grandfather will definitely make good use of it, right?”
After a while, the old doctor smiled and shook his head, “You this girl! With this temperament, you’ll suffer losses. Third Grandfather will accept it. No more giving next time, got it?”
“Got it, Third Grandfather. Take care going down the mountain slowly. Nan Nan and I will head off first!”
“Go, go!”
After Lin Xin left, a young man who came up the mountain together leaned close to the old doctor: “Grandfather, what did Lin Xin give you? Let me see!”
“Go away, go away.” The old doctor waved his hand and patted his forehead, “Wanting to see everything. Hurry and carry me down the mountain.”
“Okay, okay, down the mountain. But when we get home, you have to show me!”
“We’ll talk when we get back. If you drop the old man halfway again, I’ll never show you.”
The old doctor climbed onto his grandson’s back, turned his head and tossed out a sentence: “When we get back, bring him to my home, and I’ll set his bones and bandage him. Hurry up!” After saying that, he urged his grandson to go quickly.
In no time, this clearing was empty, with only that deep trap like a big open mouth waiting for new prey to enter.
“Sis, that grandfather is a good person.” On the way down the mountain, Nan Nan hugged Lin Xin’s neck and said softly.
“Is that so? Nan Nan thinks Third Grandfather is a good person?”
“Yeah, he helped us just now.”
“But, just because he helped us, does that make him a good person?” Lin Xin teased him on purpose.
“Not exactly,” Nan Nan frowned in distress, trying hard to express what he meant clearly. But he thought for a long time without figuring it out, so he simply said, “Nan Nan can’t say it well, just feels he’s a good person.”
“Then, what about that brother who jumped into the trap to check the mark for us? Does Nan Nan think he’s a good person?” Lin Xin asked again.
“Him!” Nan Nan’s little brows furrowed even tighter, “Nan Nan doesn’t know. He seems like a good person one moment, bad the next. It confuses Nan Nan.”
Lin Xin surprisingly raised her eyebrows. Nan Nan’s perception was surprisingly sharp.
Lin Zhou was indeed not a bad person, especially with very upright values on major issues of right and wrong. But he lacked principles, was too soft-hearted, and easily swayed by family affection and friendship in small matters, eventually leading to big trouble.
“Nan Nan is pretty amazing, can even distinguish good people from bad!” Lin Xin was best at praising.
“Hehe!” Nan Nan hugged his sister’s neck and smiled quietly.
