Chapter 90: He Luan’er Comes Up With Another Foolish Idea
That night, Lin Nan stayed at his medical hall with Cui Shi.
The rest returned together to Meng Yichen’s house in town. Meng Yixuan happened to be awake too, so everyone chattered on about building the house and preparing to move, telling him everything.
Mo Ziyuan also brought the Imperial Grandson over for him to see, but unfortunately the Imperial Grandson was fast asleep at the time, so they couldn’t interact.
After seeing off Mo Ziyuan, Gao Yong, and the others, Meng Yichen sat at his big brother’s bedside. He dismissed the serving servants and leisurely took a handkerchief to wipe his big brother’s hands and face.
“Yi Chen, did something happen?” Meng Yixuan knew his younger brother well. Seeing him like this, he knew he had something on his mind.
“Nothing.” Meng Yichen paused in his movements, then continued wiping.
“What can’t you tell big brother!” Meng Yixuan looked at his outstanding younger brother and felt very proud, but thinking of his body, he couldn’t help feeling a bit worried.
“I······” Meng Yichen pursed his lips and said in an extremely low voice, “I seem to have fallen for someone I shouldn’t like.”
“Oh? What kind of young lady is she? Why shouldn’t you like her? You know our Meng Family doesn’t need to consolidate status through marriage, so no one will oppose it as long as you like her.” Meng Yixuan was really curious about what kind of young lady his younger brother had his eye on. After all, he hadn’t taken a liking to any of the noble ladies in the capital city.
“She······ she’s an orphan girl from the village.” Perhaps because these words had been buried in his heart for too long, or maybe because his big brother could clearly listen to him ramble today, Meng Yichen told Meng Yixuan everything about Lin Xin in one go.
“So this young lady is my savior too! You’re not planning to repay her by marrying her, are you?”
“How could that be! I like her not because of that, but because of who she is. I like her as a person!” Meng Yichen emphasized repeatedly.
“If that’s the case, then why do you say you shouldn’t like her?”
“Zi Yuan seems to like her too, and she’s different with him than with me.” Meng Yichen tossed the handkerchief into the water basin, covered his eyes with both hands, and leaned back against the chair.
“That’s indeed tricky.” Meng Yixuan thought for a moment and asked, “Then how did you determine that her feelings for Zi Yuan are romantic?”
“Because she treats me the same as she treats Qing Bro and the others.” Meng Yichen still covered his face as he answered, his voice muffled through his palms, sounding somewhat distorted.
“Fate is a strange thing. It might descend on you at any time.” Meng Yixuan knew his words were superficial, but he really didn’t know how to comfort his younger brother.
“Don’t worry, bro. I know what I should do! With my broken body, any young lady who follows me would just suffer hardships. It’s good like this.” Meng Yichen lowered his hands, smiled at his brother, and said.
“How could that be! Heaven must have arranged your fate, and someday it will appear before you.” Meng Yixuan was good at leading troops in battle, not at comforting a younger brother who hadn’t even started dating yet and was already heartbroken.
“Alright, I get it. Bro, you always lecture me. How are things with Sister Ming Sha? Have you told her you’re awake?”
This time, it was Meng Yixuan’s turn to have a bitter face. He shook his head gently. “I won’t drag her down. Besides, I heard her family has already started marriage proposals for her—with the legitimate eldest son of Minister of Justice Yun’s family. They’ve probably even set the wedding date by now!”
“Sigh!” The brothers sighed at the same time.
They sat dazedly for a while longer, then Meng Yixuan slowly fell asleep again. Looking at his still somewhat pale face, Meng Yichen gave a bitter smile and sighed softly, “We really are blood brothers!”
Lin Xin stayed in the space for two days. She thoroughly organized the entire space. The things she had gotten from the Grand Tutor’s Mansion were sorted and stored categorically. The supplies collected during the apocalypse were placed in a separate area. Fortunately, she had collected quite a few shelves back then, which allowed those supplies to be neatly arranged in order.
Next, she spent a day cooking inside. Various fish, meat, seafood, vegetables, and seasonings collected during the apocalypse—she made whatever she saw. After cooking, she packed them into basins, bowls, and plates of various sizes and placed them on the shelves, so she could just take them out when eating.
She also steamed several large pots of rice, steamed buns, bean buns, meat buns, dumplings, and wontons. She used the noodle machine to make several dozen pounds of noodles, all placed on the shelves.
Looking at the now tidy space, she frowned. It seemed like something was still missing.
“Ah! I know.” She patted her head and set up a family travel tent in the empty space. She laid thick bedding inside, added a sleeping bag, and it was done!
She took a bath in the only RV, changed into cotton pajamas with little bear prints, then Lin Xin dove into the tent, opened her tablet, and started watching a movie.
She had been living very fulfillingly these past few days and didn’t yet know that the village had exploded—more precisely, the He family had exploded.
Lin Xin had already confirmed with the foreman building the house what kind of house to build and how big, then handed everything over to Mo Ziyuan and the others, becoming a hands-off boss.
But she didn’t know that He Luan’er still hadn’t given up on the box of gold, silver, and jewels buried underground in her courtyard. He Luan’er had originally planned to wait a few days and go dig when Lin Xin’s home was empty, but she hadn’t expected Lin Xin to act so fast and start building a house. If the buried things in the ground were dug up, what business would she have left!
So, He Luan’er came up with another terrible idea.
She knew the people building Lin Xin’s house were resting in a shed at Lin Xin’s home at night. She actually sneaked into Lin Xin’s home in the dark and slipped into the foreman’s bedding.
But her luck seemed bad. One worker got up at night and happened to see her slender figure coming from outside and slipped into the shed.
In an instant, all the ghost stories this worker had heard from childhood flooded his mind. He screamed in fright, collapsed to the ground, and yellow liquid flowed down his pants.
The village at night had fallen into deep sleep but was awakened by that terrifying howl. Lights came on one after another in household windows, and the men, throwing on clothes, went together with their neighbors toward the source of the sound.
When they discovered it was Lin Xin’s home again, everyone’s first reaction was: Could it be that these workers did something to anger Lin Lao Er, and he manifested again?
In the end, they only saw a worker slumped in the courtyard, scared out of his wits, tremblingly pointing at the shed and saying “there’s a ghost.”
“What ghost? Did you see it?” A bold young man walked over and asked.
“Fe-female ghost, went, went in······” The worker’s lips trembled badly, his words unclear. Everyone only heard “female ghost.”
