Chapter 109: Digging Up Tree Seedlings
It had been a week since the last time Gray almost fulfilled the “wish.”
These past few days, the green soap fruit at the seaside had mostly been collected by Su Ran.
The open space behind the house had also been transplanted with many wild fruit seedlings by her.
Among these wild fruit, there were chili fruit and vinegar fruit, which Su Ran planted closer to the woods side.
She also propped up a few pieces of wood next to several chili fruit and vinegar fruit plants, so that the vines of these few chili fruit and vinegar fruit plants would have a place to climb up.
Besides chili fruit, she also dug up a few finger onion plants and planted them all in the open space behind the house.
These kinds of wild fruit were ones she could almost always use when cooking, so Su Ran always chose to bring them back first.
As for these dug-up wild fruit seedlings, except for the few that didn’t survive, the surviving ones were growing quite well and were also successively bearing fruit.
Today, Su Ran planned to have Gray take her to a few places inside the forest with green soap fruit, to pick the green soap fruit there as well.
She also wanted to see if she could find seedlings of green soap fruit trees and other fruit trees along the way, and dig them back together.
The breakfast before setting off was egg pancakes made from flour ground from green soap fruit, mixed with wild eggs.
Su Ran also added chopped seafood and finger onion inside.
This meal of egg pancakes used up ten wild eggs, otherwise Gray wouldn’t have enough to eat.
Of course, they couldn’t just eat egg pancakes.
Su Ran also had Gray catch two blue fish on the spot and roast them, plus a large basin of fried meatballs made last night, and a remaining leg of roasted four-eared ox.
After eating and drinking their fill, Su Ran brought tools, put on the backpack, and threw a small bag of food into the backpack, as well as two large animal hide bags for fruit, then hugged Gray’s neck with both hands, and was carried flying by Gray.
Gray took Su Ran to a woods in the north of the forest.
Su Ran felt that being carried by Gray in the air, they flew for at least an hour before slowly descending into the woods.
The appearance in this woods was similar to the river beach side, also mainly consisting of bird’s nest trees, willow trees, and sweet leaf vein trees.
Among these trees, bird’s nest trees were the most numerous.
The shrubbery on the ground, as far as the eye could see, was mostly plants familiar to Su Ran’s eyes.
The most abundant were white bean grass crawling all over the ground.
Next were round-leaf grass and mint grass, interspersed with some miscellaneous other wild grass shrubs.
As soon as Su Ran’s feet touched the ground, she locked onto a small tree seedling that was just over a meter tall.
This was a red fruit tree seedling.
Su Ran looked around and didn’t see any large red fruit tree shadows, so it must have been some small animal that brought the seed here.
This could be considered a serendipitous find.
Su Ran didn’t dig up this tree right away, but first memorized the location, to come back and dig it up when leaving later.
Then she walked together with Gray toward the direction of those few green soap fruit trees here.
There were only two green soap fruit trees here in total.
These two trees were a bit shorter than those at the seaside, and even the green soap fruit growing under the tree crowns could be reached by Su Ran just lifting her hand.
On this trip out, the tools Su Ran brought for carrying things were a backpack, plus two large animal hide bags.
The backpack would be used to carry the found fruit tree seedlings when heading back later, while the two bags were for carrying green soap fruit.
The animal hide bags were made by Su Ran just yesterday.
Because previously when going to the seaside to pick green soap fruit, the backpack was used for carrying things back and forth, which was really too troublesome.
Especially for Gray, who had to hold her while carrying the backpack with the other hand, which was not only inconvenient but also dangerous.
So this time Su Ran made many animal hide bags.
Besides animal hide bags, she also made a few animal hide water bags that could be hung on the waist. Thinking of carrying them on every outing, to avoid having to bring a thermos every time, which was inconvenient and prone to being bumped.
Su Ran handed both animal hide bags to Gray, letting Gray go to the tree top first to pick the fully ripened green soap fruit.
She then took the entrenching tool and wandered around under the tree to see if there were any green soap fruit tree seedlings nearby.
This fruit tree drops fruit on the ground every year, so there should always be some small seedlings growing from the fruit pits of rotten fruit around!
Thinking this, Su Ran had already circled around under the tree.
Unfortunately, there was no discovery.
The other green soap fruit tree was more than ten meters away from this one.
She glanced over there, then turned back to look at Gray who was casually standing on the tree top picking fruit, and called out loudly to it: “Gray, I’m going over to that green soap fruit tree to check!”
Gray heard her voice and immediately turned its head to look over.
After hearing Su Ran’s words, it wanted to come down from the tree, but was quickly stopped by Su Ran.
“Fill up the bags here first before going over!”
Although the two animal hide bags were large, they couldn’t hold many green soap fruit since they were also big; actually one bag couldn’t hold much.
Just this little bit of stuff really wasn’t worth flying back and forth carrying, and besides, she wasn’t going far, just a distance visible to the naked eye.
Su Ran carried the entrenching tool and walked toward the other green soap fruit tree.
The shrubbery around this tree was quite dense and tall.
Su Ran first glanced up at this shrubbery, wanting to see if there were any familiar plants.
And she really did spot a few chili fruit plants.
She was delighted in her heart, but didn’t rush to dig them up, instead turning her gaze to other places.
She walked a bit to the side; today’s main goal was still the green soap fruit trees.
The green soap fruit trees in the forest were really too scattered; collecting them always required running around like this.
Moreover, since these fruit trees weren’t on her own territory, they were always out of sight and out of reach, so Su Ran always felt uneasy.
However, probably due to her good luck, about five or six meters away from this green soap fruit tree, she really did find a few green soap fruit tree seedlings.
And there were four in total.
These four seedlings were growing together.
Two were a bit taller, appearing at least about two meters high, with trunks as thick as a baby’s arm.
The other two were shorter, only about half a meter, clearly having just grown this year.
Su Ran slanted the entrenching tool into the soil and first dug out the two small tree seedlings along with the soil, bit by bit.
After digging them out, she first set the two small tree seedlings aside.
Then she took a step to dig the nearest slightly taller green soap fruit seedling.
Because this fruit seedling was taller, its roots were deeper, making it harder to dig than the two smaller ones just now.
Fortunately, the soil in this forest was moist, so the shovel didn’t take too much effort once inserted.
After a few shovelfuls from Su Ran, the soil clod under the seedling showed signs of loosening.
She quickly shoved the shovel in deeply again, stepped on the shovel with her foot and exerted force, wanting to uproot the tree directly.
And just as she was using all her strength, with her mind fully focused on shoveling the soil clod under her foot.
She suddenly felt a chill all over, her whole body instantly going numb from the scalp as if her hair was standing on end, her entire body freezing stiff!
Su Ran’s heart pounded violently, then she slowly raised her head and looked toward the dense green-leaved shrubbery opposite her.
Between the green shrub branches, a pair of reddish-brown eyes revealed the bloodthirsty chill of a hunter!
