Chapter 16: Trading Meat
She found it amusing deep down, but she also had no intention of preparing such roast meat pairings for the werewolf anymore.
However, she felt that the werewolf probably just simply disliked eating kelp, rather than disliking salty flavors. After all, it had eaten those two pieces of beef jerky quite happily that morning.
The leg of lamb in the werewolf’s hand was almost finished, so Su Ran cut half of the several rib cuts from the sheep’s body, bones and all, and placed them in front of the two.
After that, she stopped paying attention to the werewolf and began filling her own belly.
However, just as she was eating happily, the werewolf sitting beside her suddenly tore fiercely at the roast meat in its hand while letting out a loud, angry wu wu from its throat!
Su Ran was startled by its sudden noise!
At this moment, the pair of ears on top of its head were rigidly straight, constantly swiveling back and forth. The big tail behind its butt impatiently smacked the ground hard, making “pa pa” sounds!
It growled lowly while eating, its sharp teeth flashing intermittently at the corners of its mouth.
Just as Su Ran was tense all over from the werewolf’s inexplicable emotion, she suddenly heard a rustling sound and low beast language from behind.
She quickly turned her head to look, and upon seeing it, she immediately understood why the werewolf was like this.
From her morning observation, Su Ran knew that the beastmen here usually processed ingredients at the place by the riverside after coming out of the small path.
But the place where she and the werewolf had made fire twice was about two hundred meters downstream from the river water.
The distance here was a bit far, but it still didn’t prevent those beastmen with keen senses of smell from detecting the faint aroma of roast meat wafting through the air.
Moreover, the beastmen’s hearing was equally sharp; with a little searching, they could hear the noises she and the werewolf were making here.
Thus, now she and the werewolf were eating happily up front, while unbeknownst to them, a large crowd of beastmen had gathered behind, drooling, stretching their necks, and peering over.
In the beastmen crowd, Su Ran also saw that white fox female from that day, and Xiao Ju perched on a tree, staring eagerly this way.
In the instant their eyes met Xiao Ju’s, she saw the little one immediately prop up its upper body, tuck in its slender long legs, and turn into a squatting position on the branch.
It seemed as if as long as Su Ran beckoned to her, she would jump over immediately.
However, Su Ran still controlled her stirring impulse and ruthlessly turned her head back.
The werewolf could share food equally with her, but that didn’t mean she could casually divide the food with others.
Especially now, the other beastmen’s coveting of the roast meat had already made the werewolf feel offended.
After eating seven or eight kelp-wrapped meats, Su Ran was already a bit full.
The werewolf beside her had just picked up a new piece of roast meat with bone, clearly only half full.
Su Ran stood up, went to the riverside to wash her hands, then tried her best to ignore the group of beastmen still not dispersed not far away, and quickly returned to sit beside the werewolf.
If she had just found the actions of the beastmen behind her eyeing the food amusing, now some beastmen were clearly about to lose control.
To the point that the actions of some beastmen quickly leaving and disappearing into the depths of the forest made Su Ran unable to help but feel nervous and let her imagination run wild.
Beastmen beastmen…
Always carrying the word “beast.”
Su Ran was very afraid that this group of beastmen might lose control and suddenly rush up together to clash with the werewolf, turning her into an innocent fish caught in the crossfire…
There was still one-third of the roasted white-headed sheep mutton left. Noticing that Su Ran had stopped eating, the werewolf seemed to let loose its appetite even more.
At this moment, it directly tore off the remaining whole leg of lamb and gnawed on it, seemingly forgetting the burning gazes from behind.
And just then, a faint “mew~” suddenly came from behind the two.
Su Ran was stunned. Turning her head, she saw Xiao Ju standing less than ten meters behind her and the werewolf, holding a yellowish-brown animal whose appearance she couldn’t make out.
The animal’s body was softly limp, blood dripping continuously from its belly, and its powerless little legs twitching occasionally, clearly not yet dead.
And just as Su Ran had turned her head to look at Xiao Ju and hadn’t reacted yet, the werewolf beside her suddenly sprang up!
He threw down the leg of lamb in his hand, turned to face Xiao Ju, arched his tall body, half-spread the wings behind him, tail tight against his thighs, and barked “wu wang wu wang” twice at Xiao Ju!
While roaring, his throat also intermittently emitted rough “wu wu” sounds.
Su Ran was so scared by the werewolf’s sudden action that all her body hair stood on end!
Without exaggeration, in just a few short seconds, she had already calculated where to run if the werewolf and Xiao Ju started fighting!
However, to her surprise, this time Xiao Ju didn’t confront the werewolf like she had in the bird’s nest.
Facing the werewolf’s angry roar, she still mewed softly “mew~” twice at the werewolf, then lifted the prey in her hand toward him.
“Mew~”
“Wu~ mew~”
Xiao Ju’s voice was faint from start to finish, showing no anger at the werewolf’s attitude; Su Ran even detected a hint of pleading in it.
By now, she had somewhat guessed Xiao Ju’s intention.
She wanted to exchange for roast meat, using the prey she had hunted.
It seemed that even arrogant beastmen couldn’t resist the temptation of gourmet food.
They were even willing to lower their stance for a taste of deliciousness.
Facing the posture-lowered Xiao Ju, the werewolf slightly relaxed its tense body, but its throat still intermittently emitted a string of displeased low growls.
“Meow ao~”
Xiao Ju persisted relentlessly, ignoring the werewolf’s very unfriendly attitude, determined not to give up until she got some roast meat.
Su Ran watched the two at a standoff, along with the beastmen behind them observing either “secretly” or “openly”; some small ideas she’d had since arriving at this settlement and seeing other beastmen gradually took root in her mind.
She crouched down, cut a palm-sized piece of meat from the mutton placed on the sweet leaf vein tree leaves, then walked to the werewolf’s side and poked its arm.
When the werewolf looked over, she held up the roast meat in her hand and gestured toward Xiao Ju.
She clearly saw that little cat person’s eyes “biu——” light up!
Then, in the instant the werewolf frowned, she pointed at the prey in the little cat person’s hand and said: “Let’s exchange with her, we’ll roast that animal for you!”
The werewolf couldn’t understand her words, but it could understand her body language.
It looked at the roast meat in Su Ran’s hand, frowned at her, and the low growl in its throat turned into a soft wu wu.
It sounded a bit aggrieved.
He had probably only understood the meaning of exchanging with Xiao Ju, but not her saying to roast that animal for him.
So he thought Su Ran wanted him to eat raw meat.
Su Ran guessed this.
Then, the werewolf turned to look at the prey in Xiao Ju’s hand, hesitated for a moment, took the roast meat from Su Ran’s hand, and barked toward Xiao Ju:
“Ao wu~”
