Chapter 31: You’re So Arrogant!
“Good, good!” Wei En’s old eyes were filled with tears. He had finally waited for this day after so many years. “But I haven’t packed my things yet. Can it be tomorrow?”
“No need, I’ll arrange for someone to help you pack tomorrow. By the way, is Uncle Wei still out of town? I’d like to invite him back to help me too,” Xia Chenge stopped him.
Wei En nodded vigorously. “I’ll have him come home immediately.”
The Wei En family were all honest and upright people. Because Old Master Xia had saved his son’s life, they had been loyal to the Xia family ever since. For all these years, no matter how much Xu Jingyi had tried to coerce and torment this family, they had held firm and refused to betray Old Master Xia.
Although she had now driven out the Xia Minglan family, the servants remaining in the Xia family were all people they had hired later. They were on her side now, but she couldn’t guarantee they wouldn’t turn on her one day.
Therefore, the only people she could trust at the moment were the Wei En family.
“Grandpa Wei, the Xia family owes you a great deal. I won’t let you suffer these years of injustice for nothing,” Xia Chenge promised him. “As long as I am here, you will never have to go through the same ordeal again!”
“Little Miss, as long as you are well, we ask for nothing more.”
Ling Hanmu had been watching the old man and the young woman from the side, without interrupting.
He had investigated the Xia family and knew that the current Xia family only existed in name; in reality, it had long been in Xu Jingyi’s grasp.
And yet, Xia Chenge had managed to turn the tide in just a few days. Not only had she driven out Xia Minglan and Xu Jingyun, but she had also subtly borrowed his influence, making everyone believe that Xu Jingyun couldn’t establish herself in Haicheng because she had offended him.
This way, people would think that he was standing up for Xia Chenge, while Xia Chenge herself would remain as legendary as ever.
When Xu Jingyi returned, it would be unlikely for him to believe that Xia Chenge had recovered so quickly.
What a clever girl, she had planned everything!
Wei En went inside to call his wife, while Xia Chenge stood outside the door without moving.
Ling Hanmu walked over. “Little Brother, won’t people suspect you doing this?”
“What do I have to fear?” Xia Chenge glanced at Ling Hanmu. “Let them suspect. They’ll find out sooner or later anyway. It’s better to hear some rumors early to prepare. I’m not interested in a boring war.”
“You’re quite arrogant!” Ling Hanmu said. “But I like it.”
“Don’t forget, you’re the one who came with me. If people are going to spread rumors, they’ll say you forcefully stood up for me first,” Xia Chenge said nonchalantly. “There’s always a price to pay for coming to witness my secrets!”
Ling Hanmu was stunned for a moment, then burst into laughter.
This little girl was openly using him. How interesting, how interesting! He had never met such a straightforward person who didn’t even bother to be subtle.
Xia Chenge couldn’t be bothered to deal with him. Anyway, this guy would guess about seventy to eighty percent of it whether she said it or not. Why should she pretend to be ignorant and be laughed at?
“They are very loyal to your family,” Ling Hanmu said sincerely. “You are quite lucky.”
“That’s because Old Master treated them like friends and exchanged sincerity for sincerity. Unlike some people who are two-faced. Who would trust them, right?” Xia Chenge said with a light, sarcastic tone towards Ling Hanmu.
Ling Hanmu chuckled. “Little Brother, don’t read too much into my words. In front of you, I’ve always been straightforward.”
“Cut the act,” Xia Chenge turned her eyes away and muttered softly. “You’re exactly the kind of person they mean when they say someone is full of schemes.”
“What did you say? The wind is too strong, I couldn’t hear you!”
“I’ll go check on them.”
Xia Chenge directly changed the topic and walked into the house.
Ling Hanmu shook his head helplessly. After a while, as if thinking of something, the smile on his handsome face became even brighter.
The Wei En family was destitute. To say they were packing was actually just taking out a couple of clean clothes that could still be worn outside.
Xia Chenge went to the kitchen to see their meal. When she lifted the lid of the pot, she saw that they had only steamed two buns and a small plate of stir-fried dried radishes.
Xia Chenge stared blankly at the steamed buns. People in this era had basically solved their basic needs, yet their lives were so difficult. Each person only had one steamed bun for dinner. Could they even eat their fill?
Just how excessive had Xu Jingyi been all these years?
“Little Miss, we’ve finished packing,” Xia Chenge didn’t know how long she had been standing there until Granny Wei spoke behind her, and she finally came back to her senses.
Xia Chenge immediately put the lid back on the pot and turned around, shaking her head. “It’s nothing, I was just looking around.”
Granny Wei saw this and said lightly, “We’ve gotten used to simple meals over the years. There’s nothing wrong with it.”
“I’m sorry.” Although the Wei En family hadn’t fallen to this state because of her, she was currently in the identity of the Xia family’s young lady, and she had the obligation to apologize on behalf of the original owner. “This will not happen again in the future.”
“Thank you, Little Miss.”
“Alright, let’s not talk about that anymore. Let’s go home and eat first.”
Xia Chenge put away her discomfort. Wei En had already packed his luggage and was waiting outside.
As the three of them walked to the alley entrance, they saw a taxi already parked there, with Ling Hanmu standing beside it.
As soon as he saw Xia Chenge, he waved. “Little Brother, over here.”
Xia Chenge wanted to refuse, but thinking that the two elders hadn’t eaten yet, she didn’t want to delay and let the two elders get into the car.
Wei En had noticed the imposing young man, Ling Hanmu, early in the morning. However, since Xia Chenge hadn’t introduced him, he didn’t feel comfortable asking and had been secretly observing Ling Hanmu along the way.
Perhaps because there was an unfamiliar person present, Ling Hanmu changed from his usual talkative self and rarely spoke proactively.
Xia Chenge was happy to have some peace and quiet. In fact, Ling Hanmu like this truly had the demeanor of a young master, exuding a coldness that made people hesitant to approach.
When they arrived at the Xia family, Ling Hanmu did not follow them inside after getting out of the car.
He stopped Xia Chenge, who was about to go in, and said, “Little Brother, I won’t be going in with you. I’m heading home now. Remember to call me if anything comes up.”
“Okay, goodbye!” Xia Chenge was crisp and efficient, not even bothering to pretend to politely ask him to stay.
Ling Hanmu seemed a little hurt. “Little Brother, you’re so heartless. I helped you, and you didn’t even invite me in for a glass of water.”
“You said you wanted to leave yourself. There’s no point in me forcing you to stay, is there?” Xia Chenge retorted.
Ling Hanmu smiled. “What an unworldly little girl. I’m leaving!”
After saying that, he pinched Xia Chenge’s cheek and turned to walk towards his sports car.
Before long, the sports car quickly disappeared at the end of the intersection.
Xia Chenge shook her head. This young master was truly willful.
The first thing Wei En and his wife did upon entering the Xia family was to put down their luggage and go see the old couple of the Xia family.
Xia Chenge couldn’t bear to watch such an emotional scene and didn’t follow them.
Throughout the entire day, no police officers had come to find her. She had asked the servants, and they had also not received any calls from the Public Security Bureau.
Strange, what had happened in the meantime? Why was there no reaction from the Public Security Bureau? Xia Chenge rubbed her chin, looking puzzled.
