Chapter 21: A Melodious Tune
Chapter Twenty-One: A Melodious Tune
This noon, Qing Tian did not choose to go to the library. She brought the books she had bought a few days ago to the grass in the back garden, enjoying the sunshine. Although people always said that reading under the scorching sun was harmful to the eyes.
She looked up through the gaps in the leaves and saw that small patch of blue sky. The wind blew gently through the leaves, and the rustling sound was like a piano melody, clear and pleasant.
Suddenly, intermittent piano music drifted from afar. Although Qing Tian said she didn’t have a particular fondness for music, she had taken piano skills classes when she was young.
The melody was played back and forth, repeatedly, several times. Qing Tian couldn’t tell what the tune was, but from the patience of the person playing, she could tell he was practicing this piece!
Qing Tian closed her eyes, calming her mind and excluding other distractions, enjoying the intermittent piano music.
Various images flashed through her mind. The most recent was the conversation between Ji Xiangyu and Xia Yang last night. She couldn’t understand why they didn’t respect her, and what hurt her even more was Ji Xiangyu’s attitude.
What she thought was a closing distance was suddenly pushed far away again; they were destined to be unable to get close.
The piano notes, sometimes a single note, sometimes a short phrase, and later a whole piece.
Not knowing what difficulty the other person was encountering, the melody became chaotic for a while. Finally, the person seemed to lash out, their fingers sweeping across every piano key.
Qing Tian frowned, picked up her book, and curiously walked towards the music room. Through the window outside, she saw someone sitting inside. That person was the one causing her trouble—Ji Xiangyu.
He sat upright in front of the piano, extending his left index finger to slide heavily across the keys, from right to left, then from left to right. After closing his eyes and fumbling with the piano two or three times, his fingers finally softened, and his expression became gentle.
Qing Tian stood outside the window, secretly watching him practice. He sighed deeply, placed his hands flat on the keys, paused slightly, and then skillfully played a melody. The tune was exceptionally slow and soft. After several repetitions, he finally played the melody fluently!
After playing with concentration, he took a deep breath, a faint smile appearing at the corner of his lips, as if he had finally finished. He then nimbly played a cheerful melody.
Qing Tian found it a bit familiar, as if she had heard it somewhere before.
Suddenly, a gust of wind swept through the nearby leaves, causing the window to shake. The creaking sound drowned out the piano music. She held her breath, afraid of being discovered by Ji Xiangyu at any moment.
After a moment, Ji Xiangyu stopped playing and turned his head towards the window. There was nothing outside except the window still swaying in the wind. The old window creaked and groaned in the breeze.
He walked towards the windowsill with doubt, wanting to get a clear look at the situation outside. When he approached the windowsill, he found no one there. He shook his head and muttered to himself with doubt, “That’s strange…”
After speaking, he walked back to the piano and continued playing.
Qing Tian hid by the corner of the wall, her heart pounding rapidly. When Ji Xiangyu walked towards the windowsill just now, her heart almost leaped out of her chest. Thankfully, thankfully…
“Sister Qing, what are you doing?”
Qing Tian was startled by the sudden call. She nervously put her hand to her mouth and whispered, “Shh!”
Song Shishi asked with confusion, “Why are you squatting there?”
Qing Tian felt utterly embarrassed. Was this sister too insensible at such a critical moment? All she could do now was pray that Ji Xiangyu wouldn’t discover her here.
But fate had other plans. Just as she was about to stand up, Ji Xiangyu noticed the situation outside the window. He walked over. Song Shishi winked at Qing Tian and mouthed: Someone behind you!
Qing Tian immediately understood and stood there with an embarrassed expression. She felt a powerful aura behind her, and goosebumps rose all over her body. She looked at Song Shishi with a mournful expression. Song Shishi looked at Ji Xiangyu, then at Qing Tian, and then slipped away.
Qing Tian pleaded inwardly: True friendship is shown in times of trouble. Isn’t this Song Shishi too disloyal?
Ji Xiangyu’s deep voice came from behind her, “Why are you here?”
Qing Tian turned around with a helpless expression, replying with a miserable and awkward tone, “I was reading in the garden just now, and then I heard a beautiful melody, so I came over to take a look!”
Ji Xiangyu pondered, “It’s finished now!”
Qing Tian was a bit stunned. She stammered, “Well, actually…”
Ji Xiangyu couldn’t help but laugh, “No need to explain, I understand!”
“Huh?” Qing Tian didn’t quite understand his meaning!
Ji Xiangyu extended his hand and invited, “I wonder if I have the honor of inviting the most beautiful princess to dance a tune with me?”
Qing Tian was a bit taken aback. She stared blankly at the window and asked, “How, how do I get in?”
Then she saw Ji Xiangyu smile. His bright eyes sparkled and were charming in the sunshine!
