Chapter 31: That Veil
Chapter Thirty-One: That Veil
Qing Tian and Xia Yang were chatting idly in the hospital room. Then the doctor came to examine him. After receiving the injection, Xia Yang became drowsy.
As Xia Yang fell asleep again, Qing Tian tidied up her things and prepared to leave. However, when she reached the hospital room doorway, she saw a bag left on the floor by its owner.
She wondered, why didn’t Ji Xiangyu come in? Why did he leave without a word?
She picked up the contents of the bag and placed them on the table. Looking at the bag, she felt an indescribable sadness. Did he think it was too much trouble?
She adjusted Xia Yang’s blanket and carefully closed the door. After leaving the hospital, she walked along the sidewalk towards the bus stop. Her steps were slow, and each step felt like a sigh, a lingering breath surrounding her.
Standing at the bus stop, she took out her mobile phone and found a familiar name in her contacts. She hesitated whether to call. Looking at that familiar string of numbers, she lost the courage to say anything. She wanted to ask him why he left without a word.
After much internal struggle, she dialed Ji Xiangyu’s mobile phone number. It rang for ten seconds before being answered.
The moment he answered the telephone call, she felt the surrounding air instantly freeze.
Through the mobile phone, Qing Tian heard his gentle voice say, “Qing Tian, are you okay?”
He asked if she was okay. Why did he leave first and not accompany her home?
Qing Tian originally wanted to ask him why he left first, but when he answered the telephone call and asked if she was okay, she suddenly felt how childish she was for wanting to ask a pointless answer.
She smiled slightly, the corners of her lips turning up, but then remembered that he couldn’t see her on the other end of the telephone call, so she said, “Mhm, I’m very good… and you….”
Ji Xiangyu waited for a long time but didn’t hear Qing Tian continue, so he sighed and said, “It’s good that you’re good!”
Such a conversation immediately stiffened the atmosphere. Unbeknownst to them, music was playing somewhere by the roadside:
Remember when the cherry blossoms were in bloom,
Before I knew how to confess my love to you,
When early spring arrived, we both closed our eyes, longing for the future.
We are in this great era,
Engaged in several competitions,
We were separated, we loved,
Waiting for the love we haven’t yet loved with you.
You said, isn’t it sad.
She heard this song from his earpiece. She thought perhaps he was playing it at home.
The lyrics of this song were so moving. Qing Tian quietly held her mobile phone and listened. A bus slowly approached in the distance. She said, “My bus is here, ….. bye-bye!”
From the other end, he softly said, “Qing Tian, actually I…..”
Qing Tian followed the crowd onto the bus. She heard Ji Xiangyu say something but didn’t hear clearly, so she asked, “What is it?”
Then, the people behind her started pushing, and she was forced to move forward. Her hand slipped, and her mobile phone fell. The person who bumped into her said, “Sorry.”
Qing Tian looked coldly at that person, then bent over to pick up her mobile phone. She saw that the call had already been hung up.
She sat in the back seat by the window, clutching her mobile phone tightly, her eyes fixed on the rapidly passing scenery outside the window. Why did their interactions always end like this?
She opened Weibo, logged in, and typed a string of words: The person you like is like a shooting star; you can see them, but you don’t have time to make a wish!
After finishing, she exited and turned off her mobile phone, swaying with the rhythm of the bus as she headed home.
She leaned her head against the car window, closed her eyes, and thought about all her future interactions with Ji Xiangyu. She remembered the invitation from that morning. She opened her bag, took out the invitation, and carefully read every word on it.
She slowly traced each word with her fingertip. She was still struggling with whether she should go. Ji Weiwei disliked her so much; what right did she have to go?
Qing Tian gave a helpless, bitter smile.
