Chapter 298: You Are The Murderer?
The moment the suitcase was opened, gasps of surprise erupted from all around.
A pungent, unpleasant odor emanated from the suitcase, a difficult-to-describe rotten sour smell filling the air.
“So smelly!”
“Oh my god, that’s horrifying…”
“Ugh—”
The surrounding crowd continuously made sounds of vomiting.
Jiang Yuan pursed her lips, mentally preparing herself repeatedly, then slowly opened her eyes to look at the suitcase in front of Si Heng.
The corpse, having been submerged in water, appeared pale and swollen. Its skin, which should have been smooth and firm, was covered in wrinkles. Its wet hair clung to its skin, looking horrifying and bizarre.
But the most frightening thing was not the waterlogged corpse, but… it wasn’t a complete corpse!
Her hands and feet had been dismembered.
Jiang Yuan’s eyelashes fluttered slightly, goosebumps appearing on her arms. A wave of nausea surged in her stomach, and she quickly looked away.
Xiao Xu looked at her, asking with concern, “Are you okay?”
Jiang Yuan nodded, “I’m fine.”
“Good,” Xiao Xu said. “If you need anything, just say so. Don’t pretend to be strong.”
Amidst the crowd outside the cordon, Minmin watched the scene in shock.
A female corpse…
There really was a corpse?
Did this have anything to do with He Linwen?
She frowned, a strong sense of unease surging in her heart.
At this moment, the police began to disperse the onlookers and transport the corpse to the forensic identification center.
The police station.
After Si Heng and his group returned, Chen Ziqi immediately stepped forward to report, “Boss, He Linwen is being uncooperative. He won’t say anything, no matter what we ask.”
“I understand,” Si Heng said solemnly, his gaze dark. “Leave him for now. We’ll interrogate him after confirming the victim’s identity.”
Chen Ziqi: “Understood.”
Half an hour later, Jiang Yuan and Xiao Xu also returned to the police station.
The two of them had taken Fu Xiaoxiao home.
After an unknown amount of time, Si Heng received notification that the victim’s identity had been confirmed.
The deceased was named Fang Mengyun, 26 years old, unmarried, and currently unemployed.
Si Hengmo’s brows furrowed, “Contact Fang Mengyun’s family and have them identify the body as soon as possible.”
“Received,” Meng Xiaokai immediately agreed.
Si Heng’s gaze fell on the interrogation room, his thin lips moving, “Xiao Xu, go to the interrogation room.”
“Received,” Xiao Xu hurriedly grabbed her laptop and quickly followed.
He Linwen clasped his handcuffed hands together, resting his forehead on them, his expression as gloomy as water.
He thought he had been completely foolproof, but he never expected to be discovered so quickly…
The interrogation room door was pushed open from the outside.
He Linwen looked up once, then lowered his head again.
“What is your name?” Si Heng asked calmly.
“He Linwen.”
“What is your relationship with Fang Mengyun?”
A flicker of surprise flashed in He Linwen’s eyes as he marveled at the police’s speed.
They had already identified Fang Mengyun?
He frowned, then slowly looked up at Si Heng, “Fang Mengyun is my ex-girlfriend.”
“Ex-girlfriend?” Si Heng’s eyes narrowed slightly, “When did you break up?”
He Linwen: “Two months ago.”
“What was the reason for the breakup?”
“The relationship broke down.”
“Why?”
“What reason could there be?” He Linwen raised his hand to adjust his glasses and sneered, “If you don’t love each other anymore, you separate. It’s that simple.”
Si Heng’s gaze coldly examined him, then he asked, “When was the last time you contacted Fang Mengyun?”
He Linwen: “When we broke up.”
“So you two haven’t contacted each other since the breakup?”
“I haven’t contacted her, anyway,” He Linwen said. “She used to send me WeChat messages frequently, but I didn’t reply.”
Si Heng asked, “Didn’t your relationship break down? Why would she still send you WeChat messages after the breakup?”
“I don’t know,” He Linwen shrugged. “You’d have to ask her. How would I know?”
After saying that, he sighed regretfully, “But she’s dead now, so I can’t ask. What a shame.”
Jiang Yuan stood by the one-way mirror, watching the interrogation room. From He Linwen’s words, she detected no hint of regret, but rather a trace of sarcasm and teasing.
“How do you know she’s dead?” Si Heng said gravely. “I don’t recall telling you whether Fang Mengyun was alive or dead.”
He Linwen’s expression froze, and he tugged at his lips to explain, “Of course, I deduced it. You inexplicably said I dumped the body in the lake, and now you’re asking about my relationship with Fang Mengyun. If she’s not dead, then who could it be?”
“Dumping the body in the lake?” Si Heng’s gaze was piercing, his tone serious. “When did I ever mention to you that the body was in the lake? When the police retrieved the body, you had already been taken away from the scene. How did you know the murderer dumped the body in the lake? Or perhaps, you are the murderer?”
He Linwen nervously pursed his lips. His hands, resting on the table, clenched forcefully, then loosened a few seconds later as he adjusted his glasses.
He took a deep breath and said with a smile, “I saw it on my phone. The WeChat groups were all discussing it.”
“Is that so?” Si Heng said with a half-smile, “Open the WeChat group where you saw the report about dumping the body in the lake.”
He Linwen met his gaze through his glasses and slowly nodded, “Alright.”
He picked up his phone, pressed the lock button to turn it off, and said with an expression of regret, “Sorry, officer, my phone is dead.”
“Dead?” Si Heng stood up and walked over to him, beckoning with his hand, “Give me the phone.”
He Linwen tapped the screen, trying to prove, “It’s really dead.”
Si Heng reached out, took his phone, and long-pressed the power button. The screen quickly lit up, showing 55% battery remaining.
“This still has power? Why did you lie?”
He Linwen’s back stiffened, his face pale, and he remained silent.
Si Heng tossed the phone back in front of him. “Open that WeChat message about dumping the body in the lake and show it to me.”
He Linwen remained silent and didn’t move.
After about thirty seconds, he reached for the phone, tapped the screen a few times, and said with an apologetic expression, “Sorry, officer. I accidentally deleted the group chat history.”
Si Heng rested his hands on the table, leaning in to stare at him. His deep dark eyes were sharp as a falcon’s, exuding immense pressure. “He Linwen, confessing the truth is your only way out now.”
“What?” He Linwen looked confused. “Officer, I really don’t understand what you’re saying. I was eating barbecue, and suddenly you’re accusing me of dumping a body and bringing me here to ask questions. My head is spinning.”
“Think carefully,” Si Heng straightened up, gave him a indifferent glance, and turned to leave the interrogation room.
Xiao Xu also left, carrying her laptop.
They encountered Jiang Yuan coming out of another door. She said softly, “This guy is too difficult to handle.”
“Yes,” Jiang Yuan frowned. “I’ve been observing his expression the whole time, and I didn’t see even a hint of fear on his face.”
“Exactly,” Xiao Xu nodded. “That’s the scary part.”
The group returned to the conference room to discuss the case when they suddenly heard a sharp scream, followed by a cry of pain.
“What happened?” Jiang Yuan was startled, a flicker of confusion in her eyes.
Xiao Xu, sitting beside her, explained softly, “It might be the victim’s family who arrived.”
