Chapter 8: Two Clear Streams
“Quiet! You are Class A! Staying calm is the basic quality of a trainer!”
Teacher Xi Ran picked up the white chalk again and tapped the blackboard. The “bang bang” sound of the chalk hitting the blackboard easily drew the attention of the people below the podium.
This seemed to be a habit of teachers. Every teacher had a few ways to pull the students’ attention back, the most common being slapping the desk and tapping the blackboard.
When everyone’s gaze returned to the podium, Teacher Xi Ran continued: “Personal evaluations are small settlements once a week. If your score is too low, you should think carefully about how to spend the rest of the month.
In addition to personal evaluations, there are class evaluations settled once a month, calculated based on the average of the class’s personal scores to determine the class’s score. The highest average is Class A, and the lowest is Class F.”
“After the class settlement, the class ranked A will have each member receive an extra 10,000 points reward next month, while Class B will have only 8,000 points per person.
And so on, the last-place Class F gets no points.”
“Finally, one more thing: a Pokémon’s strength accounts for the bulk, but it doesn’t mean strength is everything. Any action you take on campus could affect your personal evaluation. What behaviors deduct points and what add points—I can’t tell you. The school rules don’t have it either. You need to explore and discover it yourselves.”
“Alright, that’s all for now. Feel free to ask questions anytime.”
The people below the podium were silent for about a minute, each digesting Teacher Xi Ran’s words.
A squinting-eyed boy in the first row raised his hand. “Teacher, regarding personal evaluations, if you hold a position in the class, can that add points to your personal evaluation?”
“Yes, but the weight isn’t great. Positions can give you higher points than others during settlement, but… White Dragon High positions aren’t just for show. You must fulfill your corresponding duties, otherwise, the position is just a burden to you.”
“Can you explain the detailed point additions for various positions?” The girl beside Zuo Hang suddenly raised her hand and asked.
“I’ll send the point additions for positions to your terminals after class. Position elections will be in one week, after the first personal evaluation ends. Alright, any more questions?”
The squinting-eyed boy and the girl beside Zuo Hang returned to their seats. Teacher Xi Ran waited nearly three minutes with no one raising a hand, then she began the first day’s lesson.
“A Pokémon’s personality has a guiding influence on its stats. Adamant personality Pokémon find it easier to improve attack, while special attack improvement is relatively more difficult…
Hoshino Ryuji shook his head silently.
The homeroom teacher Xi Ran also seemed to have a strict and meticulous personality. High school life seemed a bit dimmer again.
Completely no mood to listen to the lesson, Hoshino Ryuji turned his head back, planning to see what Zuo Hang was doing.
At that moment of turning back, the dimness in Hoshino Ryuji’s eyes instantly regained its luster. It was as if a ray of light appeared in the dark high school life!
Zuo Hang—he was actually playing on his mobile phone!
Boldly placing the academy-issued terminal given to everyone on the desk, the game on the screen was Pokémon Punk 2077, just released on mobile on August 6th《!
Not a knockoff from Goose Factory, but the official version from CDPR!
In Class A where everyone was seriously listening, Zuo Hang playing on his phone during class was a true breath of fresh air in Hoshino Ryuji’s wild eyes.
“Brother, where’d you get this official version? Give me a link.”
Zuo Hang looked up and glanced at Ryuji, saying, “This terminal has no IP restrictions. Just search directly.”
“No IP restrictions? Then no need for a VPN to access YouTube?”
“Yeah, no need. Watch freely.”
Hoshino Ryuji was like discovering a new continent and immediately turned his head to operate his mobile phone.
Xi Ran quickly noticed the two whispering, but this time she completely ignored their behavior, unlike before class.
Suddenly, the back row of the classroom had two more “breaths of fresh air” wearing headphones and playing games.
Zuo Hang’s headphones were only on one ear, so he could still hear what the teacher said. Xi Ran would tap the blackboard at key points, so Zuo Hang wasn’t worried about missing anything important. Even stepping back, there was nothing in the personality topic worth his serious attention.
Hoshino Ryuji’s headphones were also only half on, probably thinking the same as Zuo Hang.
《Influence of Pokémon Personality on Stats》 was the first period in the morning and the only course in the morning that needed to be done sitting in the classroom.
The remaining three periods were consecutive combat training.
Class A gathered on the sports field.
Surprisingly, the combat teacher was also female. Xi Ran was the intellectual middle-aged female teacher type, but the combat teacher in front looked quite a bit younger than Xi Ran, though her eyes showed no passion.
“Good, everyone line up in four rows in order, ten per row.”
Zuo Hang was at the front of the first row, with Hoshino Ryuji beside him. Zuo Rou stood at the very end of the last row.
“Let me introduce myself. I’m Guan Tong, your combat teacher. If nothing unexpected happens, over the next three years, you’ll spend far more time with me than with your homeroom teacher.”
Teacher Guan Tong pulled three Poké Balls from his waist. With a flash of red light, three Pokémon appeared on the sports field.
Mudkip, Taillow, Donphan.
“Scratch, Slap, Tackle, Peck—you only need to master a few basic skills in your first week. If some of your Pokémon have high enough talent, three periods in the morning are enough to learn these skills.”
“Taillow, give a demonstration.”
The deep blue-feathered Taillow flapped its wings and took off. Flowing light bloomed on its yellow beak as it charged toward the old Wutong tree beside the crowd.
“—Whoosh!”
Some wood chips flew up from the trunk of the old Wutong tree, and a prismatic hole appeared on the trunk.
Zuo Hang looked toward the old Scholar Tree and saw quite a few pitted spots on it. The branches seemed trimmed, but unprofessionally, with chaotic branches lacking any beauty. Besides Guan Tong, this old Scholar Tree was probably a demonstration target for many teachers.
After the Taillow, Donphan and Mudkip demonstrated a few other physical attack basic skills.
Teacher Guan Tong said, “Flowing light appearing means the skill is mastered. Without it, Tackle and Peck are just simple actions with no power. There’s combat training testing every Friday. I advise you: for the first test, better all use the Pokémon from your registered trainer ID. Some people had better hide certain Pokémon and not let me see them!”
Teacher Guan Tong’s gaze lingered a long time on Zuo Hang and Hoshino Ryuji. These words were clearly pointed at them. Everyone else’s Pokémon were in Poké Balls, but these two guys had theirs standing on their shoulders, impossible not to notice.
Xingye nudged Zuo Hang with his elbow and whispered, “Brother, black household?”
Zuo Hang said, “What, you too?”
“What a coincidence, I really am.”
Xingye asked again, “Strong?”
“Average. You strong?”
“Mine’s average too.”
