Chapter 39: Ex-lover Rises From The Grave
Li Nan Yue gripped the door handle and pressed down, only to discover the door was locked from the inside.
He let out a deep, sinister chuckle and turned to go into the study to get the key.
Zhou Shuyu, watching him take out the key from the surveillance feed, felt her legs turn to jelly with fear.
Li Nan Yue inserted the key into the lock. The very next second, the smoke alarm in the entire villa blared to life.
He looked up sharply, a flicker of panic crossing his face.
Damn it!
Li Nan Yue was extremely annoyed, regretting not taking action sooner!
Unwilling to accept defeat, he turned and left.
Upon reaching the villa entrance, Li Nan Yue saw two police cars driving towards them.
His expression changed slightly, and a sense of unease welled up inside him.
Did Zhou Shuyu call the police?
Li Nan Yue quickly got into his car. Just as he started the engine, a gunshot suddenly rang out.
Zhang Dong Ye fired a shot into the air, then pointed the gun at him and warned, “Li Nan Yue, get out of the car!”
Li Nan Yue glanced at his rearview mirror and, ignoring the warning, maneuvered the car.
“Bang—”
Zhang Dong Ye shot out his car’s front tire and shouted angrily, “Get out of the car!”
Li Nan Yue violently slammed the steering wheel, his face contorted in a ferocious grimace.
Zhou Shuyu switched the surveillance feed to the villa entrance. Seeing Li Nan Yue being apprehended, her rigid body suddenly went limp, and she collapsed powerlessly onto the floor.
She felt a sense of having survived a great disaster.
Her voice, trembling with a crying tone, said, “Miss Jiang, I’m safe now, thank you…”
Fu Jinxing heard Zhou Shuyu was safe through the phone and her tense nerves instantly relaxed. “It’s good that you’re okay. I’ll hang up now.”
The little bird also felt nervous along with her. Seeing that she had hung up the phone, it lowered its head and continued eating its late-night snack.
Having saved a life, Jiang Yuan inexplicably felt a sense of accomplishment.

Jiang Yuan raised her eyebrows slightly, slipped her phone into her pocket, grabbed a handful of grains, and scattered them, chuckling, “You guys are great, and so am I.”
She reached out and gently touched the little sparrow’s head.
Not far away, a pair of eyes filled with resentment stared at her from the darkness.
His rough fingers caressed the dagger in his pocket as he approached step by step.
“Be careful, be careful!”
“Yuan Yuan, be careful!”
The sound of a mouse suddenly came.
Jiang Yuan turned her head and saw the strange figure walking towards her, her heart suddenly sinking.
Seeing this, the other party stopped in his tracks.
Jiang Yuan stood up, her gaze falling on his hand hidden in his pocket.
Her intuition told her he had a sharp weapon in his hand.
With this thought, Jiang Yuan turned and ran.
The little birds, forgetting their snacks, flew behind her, thinking they might be able to help.
“Yuan Yuan! The bad guy is catching up!” the little bird cried out in alarm.
Jiang Yuan frowned, trying hard to increase her running speed.
“Yuan Yuan, the bad guy left!” the little bird reported in real-time.
“Left?” Jiang Yuan didn’t stop, asking as she ran, “Are you sure?”
“Yes, I can’t see him anymore.”
Jiang Yuan ran a bit further and stayed at a nearby convenience store for a while before leaving.
Who was that person?
Why was he fixated on her?
As she reached the downstairs of her residential community, just as Jiang Yuan was contemplating whether to call the police, a voice suddenly called out to her, “Jiang Yuan.”
She looked over suspiciously.
Under the dim yellow streetlight, a man dressed in a black coat stood quietly by a car, tall with deep facial features.
Fu Jinxing.
What was he doing here?
Jiang Yuan frowned, walked up to the man, and said unhurriedly, “Mr. Fu, a qualified ex should be like dead. You’re not supposed to ‘resurrect’ like this.”
Fu Jinxing: “…”
The man’s dark eyebrows slowly furrowed, and he said solemnly, “I have something to ask you.”
“What?” Jiang Yuan felt a surge of wariness.
Fu Jinxing stared at her clean and pure face, his deep eyes scrutinizing her. “Are you sure the woman from five years ago was you?”
Jiang Yuan’s heart skipped a beat, and a guilty conscience quietly surged within her.
She lowered her gaze, her tone no longer as self-righteous. “It’s possible it wasn’t me. After all, Heavens love to play tricks on people…”
“Jiang Yuan,” the man’s voice took on a hint of anger. “Did you know from the beginning?”
Jiang Yuan: “…”
She asked, mustering her courage, “Why do you say that?”
Fu Jinxing gave her a look of unknown meaning. “You just need to answer yes or no.”
Jiang Yuan took a deep breath and decided to confess. “No, I knew from the beginning that I wasn’t the person you were looking for.”
“Why?”
“Because you’re rich, and I like money.”
Fu Jinxing fell silent.
After revealing the truth, Jiang Yuan felt a sense of relief.
“I know what I did was excessive. If you want revenge, come after me alone. Don’t harm my family and friends.”
She pressed her lips together and added, “As for the money I took from you, I’ll find a way to repay it.”
Fu Jinxing remained silent, carefully recalling his interactions with Jiang Yuan during that time.
She had always found various ways to get him to transfer money.
And because he had no feelings for her, he always chose the latter, between meeting her and transferring money.
Now, upon learning that the woman in his memory was not Jiang Yuan, Fu Jinxing actually felt a sense of relief.
He even felt fortunate.
Fu Jinxing stared at Jiang Yuan, his voice cold and sharp. “Do you know who the woman from five years ago was?”
“I don’t know,” Jiang Yuan shook her head. “I just happened to overhear you asking Assistant Qiao to look for someone.”
Fu Jinxing frowned, his handsome face displaying suspicion and scrutiny.
Jiang Yuan blinked her eyes, putting on an expression of “I’m an honest person, I wouldn’t lie to you.”
Fu Jinxing retracted his gaze, a hint of contemplation appearing between his brows.
Before leaving, Jiang Yuan asked again, “By the way, how did you find out I wasn’t the person you were looking for?”
Fu Jinxing looked at her again, a flicker of sarcasm in his eyes. “That person surnamed Xie sent me a message, saying you have terrible taste and that after taking so much money from me, you kept a pretty boy who stabbed you in the back.”
Jiang Yuan: “…”
Someone surnamed Xie?
Xie Yuchen, that damned scoundrel!
Fu Jinxing had already driven away, leaving Jiang Yuan grinding her teeth on the spot.
As the Spring Festival approached, Jiang Yuan went out with Deng Rui to buy New Year’s goods.
The mall was decorated with banners and lanterns, creating a festive atmosphere.
The mother and daughter returned home with bags full of purchases. As soon as Jiang Yuan entered her room, her phone rang.
It was Fu Xiaoxiao calling.
“Baby, want to come out and play? I’ll introduce you to your future sister-in-law!”
“Future sister-in-law?” Jiang Yuan held her phone, raising an eyebrow slightly. “Xiao Hang found a girlfriend?”
“Mmmhmm~” Fu Xiaoxiao laughed happily. “Your future sister-in-law is very beautiful.”
“Then I must go meet her.” Jiang Yuan agreed on a time with her. “See you tonight.”
At nine o’clock in the evening, a singer on stage sang a soothing and pleasant song. The guests below were tipsy, drinking and chatting freely.
When Jiang Yuan arrived, she saw Fu Xiaoxiao drinking a cocktail, with a blonde girl sitting beside her, holding a Ragdoll Cat in her arms.
“Yuan Yuan!” Fu Xiaoxiao stood up and took her arm, introducing her to the blonde girl. “Lilian, this is Yuan Yuan, my good sister!”
Then, she said to Jiang Yuan, “This is Lilian, Xiao Hang’s girlfriend.”
Jiang Yuan and Lilian greeted each other.
After sitting down, Jiang Yuan suddenly heard a soft, adorable voice.
“What girlfriend? I’m more like the boyfriend.” This came from the Ragdoll Cat in Lilian’s arms.
