Chapter 81: The Train Crossing The Battlefield
“There’s a small-scale zombie horde gathering ahead, numbering around five hundred, with three Butchers, six Goblins, and one Night Demon.”
The captain leading the five-man squad reported in a low voice.
The other three squads also turned their gazes toward him.
He Jie had deep eyes, thinking of the matter Director Wang had instructed before leaving.
The changes in the apocalypse exceeded expectations, and all plans were launched ahead of schedule.
His task was to open this armory, and this mission also related to whether he could secure his position as captain of the twenty-man tactical squad.
The opportunity was only once; if this unit suffered losses here, both he and the director behind him would be eliminated in the early stages of the apocalypse.
The result of being eliminated early in the apocalypse was only one.
He Jie tightened his grip on the gun grip and said in a deep voice, “Concentrate all heavy firepower on me, take them out at the fastest speed, then advance to the goal location!”
“Yes!”
After the order was given, the tactical squad split into four basic squads under He Jie’s command.
One squad responsible for surveillance and support of the battlefield, two squads for encirclement, one squad for assault.
Specific commands were carried out by each five-man captain.
Because of general energy, all old communication equipment was scrapped, and new ones hadn’t been researched yet, so large-scale combat reverted to the most primitive command methods.
A Butcher carrying an electric pole was opening an iron box in the middle of the road.
It forcefully smashed every car it passed.
A row of flattened cars along the road behind proved it wasn’t the first time it had done this.
Whether empty or containing zombies, all were smashed flat.
Shifting its steps, it targeted a brand-new red sedan nearby, then raised the electric pole in its hand forcefully, a weird smile appearing on its fat and ugly face.
Suddenly, it seemed to smell a scent even more exciting to it, faint and indistinct, masked by the acid rain.
Puzzled, it turned its head to look, only to see a little thing flying straight at it.
“Boom—”
The sound wave of the explosion mixed with the Butcher’s pained howl suddenly erupted.
Countless rain threads flew backward, flowing upward like a dragon sucking water.
The glass of buildings on both sides was also shattered by this sound.
Battle erupted abruptly.
Yellow fat mixed with gray skin fragments dyed everything around into a hellish appearance; two snipers’ armor-piercing rounds followed closely, blasting the Butcher’s damaged head into a shattered watermelon.
The massive body fell to the ground, and the zombie horde began charging at this pitifully small group of humans.
Wanting to tear apart their flesh and blood.
But the soldiers showed no fear; the firepower specialist hugged the light machine gun and began suppressing the large-scale zombie horde.
The demolition man detonated cars to create a trench, delaying the zombies’ pace.
“Boom boom boom…”
“Snipers, take out the Night Demon on the left first!”
“Assault troopers, suppress the Butcher in front.”
“…”
Orders issued methodically from the various captains’ mouths.
The zombies’ tough bodies and bloodthirsty madness had nothing commendable in the face of organized armed forces.
“Grenade numbers are running low; should we conserve them?”
“No! Fire them all; zombies from the surroundings will soon gather.”
He Jie hugged the assault rifle, standing at the very front; bullets seemed to have eyes, tearing through the rain curtain each time, precisely entering zombie skulls.
The firearm’s recoil seemed nonexistent to him.
However, under the zombies’ vast numerical advantage, they still gradually closed in on the group.
But He Jie acted as if he didn’t see it, charging forward with his gun; passing by a zombie, his combat boot stomped down, shattering the zombie’s hard skull like a tomato.
Under the acid rain’s cover, metal and gunpowder once again ruled this land.
In a lull in the battle, He Jie suddenly glimpsed an assault trooper from the surveillance squad running over, a bad feeling rising in his heart.
But seeing the zombies about to be wiped out before his eyes, he calmed down again.
The slaughter efficiency wasn’t affected in the slightest.
“There’s a train passing outside!”
He Jie froze for a moment, turning to look at him. “What?”
“Train! A train with over forty carriages is passing through here!”
The assault trooper repeated once more.
The ground vibrated slightly; that familiar sound and rhythm caused the gunfire on the battlefield to pause, falling into a brief stagnation.
He Jie ran a couple steps quickly, stepped on an abandoned car by the road with one foot, leaped over three meters in one step, grabbed the edge of the wall with one hand, and climbed upward like a gecko; in just a few breaths, he rushed to the rooftop of a small building and looked into the distance.
He saw a menacing front of an armored train rumbling from afar.
Carrying an arrogant and domineering aura, it tore through the blocking zombies, charging toward here.
More zombies were drawn out from buildings on both sides, chasing the train.
However, most were too slow and lost direction in the chaotic pursuit, but the overall trend was gathering toward this side.
The direction of the train’s advance was exactly the destination of his mission this time!
Who exactly?
Director Wang or Director Li?
Staring at the armored train, He Jie’s gaze was sinister, his brain racing, reaching a conclusion.
No matter who was behind the train, they couldn’t be allowed to lead the zombies to the armory!
He couldn’t bear the consequences of mission failure!
The battle below continued, but all Tier 1 zombies had been taken out; the rest were no longer a threat.
He Jie turned and jumped down directly, his raincoat billowing in the airflow.
“Bang!”
The small car was directly flattened by him.
“Everyone, get in the cars! The goal is to intercept that train! Snipers find attack opportunities on your own; demolition man, get ready—find a chance to blow it over for me!”
Thirty seconds later, four modified off-road vehicles crashed through the ground full of wreckage, roaring as they chased toward the train.
…
Armored train, Carriage 17.
Though the battle sounds were somewhat muffled by the acid rain, they still clearly reached inside the train.
Lu Xiao looked toward the battle location, his face showing contemplation.
‘This equipment is so mixed; firepower is fierce, but the numbers don’t match… Which unit has this configuration?’
The young man who had just been promoted to Defender last night crowded to his side, his complexion excited. “Boss, is it the regular army reclaiming the city?”
Lu Xiao slowly shook his head. “Something’s off; trouble might happen soon—be careful.”
The young man said confidently, “We’re all evolvers now; even if they all die, we two won’t.”
Lu Xiao snorted coldly. “What use is being an evolver? Can you block 5.56 or 7.62? You’re just a bit faster and stronger; you think you’re Superman?”
The young man scratched his head.
“Listen to my command later…” While speaking, Lu Xiao’s pupils suddenly contracted, looking toward the modified off-road vehicle hundreds of meters away.
Even though the off-road vehicle jolted like a trampoline, the figure hugging the sniper rifle lying on top didn’t move an inch!
“Damn! Hit the deck!”
