Chapter 141: Dazzling
Su Yaoguang walked into the room, covering her mouth and nose: “What’s going on?”
Xiao Yanci saw her and instinctively showed a grievance, his eyes red as he displayed the posture of a seductive fox.
In his previous life, every time he showed such an expression, Su Yaoguang wished she could pluck the stars from the sky for him. He was good-looking, and whenever he showed such an expression, it was especially heartbreaking.
“Young lady Su, you’ve come at the right time…” Xiao Yanci said weakly, “I want to change rooms. This room is not good for my recuperation.”
“Okay…” Su Yaoguang agreed immediately.
Zhou Wangshu next to her glanced at her, snorted, and turned to leave.
“Trouble the young master to help him change places.” Su Yaoguang said to the young monk.
“But Benefactor Su, we have no empty rooms left!” The young monk frowned and said awkwardly.
Su Yaoguang leaned close to the young monk’s ear and whispered something in a low voice.
“Thank you for your hard work.”
“No trouble, this is what we should do.” The young monk’s attitude toward Su Yaoguang improved a lot.
Su Yaoguang’s kind deed had already spread, and everyone knew that these patients had a place to recuperate because she had suggested it to the County Magistrate, so they weren’t locked up to await death like in the neighboring city.
Many patients had fled from the neighboring city, saying that the County Magistrate there didn’t care about their lives. Once patients were found, they were all locked up; the dead were thrown out and burned, and the living continued to await death.
When Su Yaoguang found Zhou Wangshu, the younger brother was helping in the kitchen. He stirred the rice porridge in the pot vigorously, as if the porridge had offended him.
“Angry?” Su Yaoguang picked up a cucumber nearby and held it to his mouth, “Open your mouth, eat something.”
Zhou Wangshu snorted coldly and continued stirring the rice porridge.
“Fine, don’t eat it then.” Su Yaoguang was about to take it back, but saw Zhou Wangshu bite down hard, chewing it crunchily, glaring at her fiercely with those peach blossom eyes, then continuing to stir the rice porridge.
Su Yaoguang leaned over and said, “Don’t you want to watch the show?”
Zhou Wangshu ignored her.
That Xiao Ci was just like one from a brothel, his sly eyes darting everywhere, and yet she fell for it, actually agreeing to change his room.
Su Yaoguang snatched the spatula from his hand, put it down, and pulled him outside.
At this time, the young monk had already arranged a room for Xiao Yanci.
Xiao Yanci looked at the huge Buddha statue in front of him, then at the patients lying everywhere around; some patients had red rashes all over their faces, some were vomiting and having diarrhea, and some were crying out in pain, their voices miserable.
“Master, is this the room you’ve arranged for me?” Xiao Yanci called out to the young monk who was about to leave.
“I told you early on there are no single rooms. The temple is full of people now, and more patients keep being brought in; there wasn’t even space to lie down. You’re kind-hearted and gave up your single room.”
“Young lady Su clearly promised to change my room.” Xiao Yanci was unwilling, “I want to see Young lady Su.”
“This is the Female Benefactor’s instruction. Isn’t this a room? Everyone else can recuperate here, why can’t you?” The young monk said, then to the monk nearby, “Senior brother, this is his illness record; his spot is… number ten. When Doctor Jiang comes to see patients later, remember to tell her that the original number ten’s symptoms have eased, and he’s been moved to another Buddhist hall for recuperation.”
Su Yaoguang pulled Zhou Wangshu to watch the commotion inside from the doorway. When she saw Xiao Yanci’s face turn ashen with anger, coughing nonstop from rage, even coughing up blood, she immediately felt relieved.
“Haha… funny, right?” Su Yaoguang tugged at Zhou Wangshu’s sleeve.
Zhou Wangshu softened his expression: “What’s so funny about this?”
Su Yaoguang pinched his cheek: “Your eyes have curved into crescents from laughing, yet you’re still stubborn.”
“Yaoguang sister.” A sweet and delicate little boy handed her a persimmon cake. “This is from Granny Wang; she said it’s from her own trees, especially sweet and fragrant, try it.”
Su Yaoguang looked at the little boy in front of her, nearly melted by his eyes. After taking the persimmon cake, she touched his hair and said gently, “Thank you, little Yuanxing.”
Zhen Yuanxing, Zhen Yuanfang’s younger brother, the unlucky child from his previous life who was forcibly taken as a catamite by the powerful. Even after fleeing all this way, his skin was still so fair and smooth, his lips redder than a young lady’s, his eyes full of stars, especially lively. When he smiled, he showed dimples, enough to disarm even the most wicked villain.
Zhou Wangshu listened to Su Yaoguang’s voice, which was at least several degrees sweeter, rolled his eyes, and turned to leave.
“Young lady Su, bad news, that Mr. Xiao the scholar has a high fever that won’t go down, keeps calling your name.” The young monk ran over to notify her.
Zhang Zhaodi happened to pass by and said to Su Yaoguang, “I’ll go see. You do your thing, no need to worry about that thing.”
She had been listening nearby for a while and knew Zhou Wangshu really disliked Su Yaoguang associating with Xiao Yanci, so she naturally took on this matter to prevent her son-in-law from quarreling with her daughter over an outsider.
Su Yaoguang couldn’t bear for Zhang Zhaodi to go take care of Xiao Yanci again. In his previous life because of her, her mother had suffered so much grievance. In this life they had no relationship, and she had no obligation to care for him.
“What does Doctor Jiang say?” Su Yaoguang always called Jiang Jing Doctor Jiang outside.
“Doctor Jiang said it’s the epidemic plus poisoning, the toxins haven’t been expelled yet causing it; as long as the poison is expelled, he’ll be fine.”
“Then let him expel the poison.” Su Yaoguang said, “We have so many patients here, how can we only care for him? As long as there’s no life danger, just follow Doctor Jiang’s advice.”
After a busy day, Su Yaoguang and the others finally stopped to rest.
The entire temple was full of people, not even space to step. They could only find a spot on the back mountain, set up a pot directly there, and cook a big stew to eat.
Supplies were tight now; the daily rice and flour and ingredients delivered had to feed several hundred people. They set up big pots for a stew of various vegetables, baked some flatbreads on the side, and added rabbit meat inside.
The Buddhist hall was a place for pure cultivation, of course no meat allowed, but they were so busy every day, without eating something nutritious, they really couldn’t hold up. This was one reason they ate in the backyard.
From opening their eyes in the morning to laboring until late at night before resting. If they encountered particularly tricky patients, Jiang Jing and Su Yaoguang would be called up, so they needed to stay in good spirits.
Zhang Zhaodi picked lots of rabbit meat for Zhen Yuanxing: “You’re too skinny, child, eat more.”
Zhen Yuanxing was cute, sweet-mouthed, and helped them bustle about every day; the women doted on him endlessly.
With his arrival, Zhou Wangshu had lost favor.
Su Yaoguang picked a piece of meat for Zhang Zhaodi, then separately for second aunt, third aunt, and maternal uncle, finally picking a rabbit leg for Zhou Wangshu.
