“No,” Xue Shufan said. “That girl’s suffering was all brought on by her husband. Even if her husband was more devoted than a dog, it wouldn’t change the fact that he’s trash.”
Lian Li pondered.
Was her suffering brought on by Ji Tan?
Strictly speaking, it wasn’t.
What she cared about wasn’t suffering, but that Ji Tan knew her but didn’t acknowledge her.
“She’s very good,” Lian Li said softly. “It’s just… we don’t have fate.”
Xue Shufan understood.
Lian Li meant that Ji Tan and she didn’t have a mother-daughter bond.
“You’re also very good,” Xue Shufan said after finishing her coffee, standing up. “Cheer up, Junior Sister. Senior Sister has fate with you, let’s go out and have fun tonight.”
“Go out where?” Lian Li asked.
“A bar.”
Lian Li thought Xue Shufan meant one of those lively, famous establishments.
The car stopped at the entrance. The two walked through a densely vegetated garden and arrived at a place not marked on any map. Only then did she realize it was a private bar.
Several small Western-style houses stood in front, with a hidden, opulent world of fame and fortune behind them.
“Have you and the Second Young Master been here before?” Xue Shufan asked as she led Lian Li upstairs to the second floor.
“No,” Lian Li replied. Besides their busy schedules, she and Jin Shi Yue spent most of their time at the villa. In the quiet, spacious environment, they would kiss and hug, feed fish, and admire flowers. With no one else around, she felt at ease and happy, and didn’t feel like going out.
“Good that you haven’t!” Xue Shufan said. “Bad Jaws is performing here tonight. Just think of it as attending a concert and relaxing.”
At first, Lian Li wondered if she might run into the Lu family here. But when the light rock music started and Duan Yu, with his dyed blue hair, and his band immersed themselves in their performance on stage, she stood by the white jade railing on the second floor, looking down at the lively scene below, and stopped thinking about the Lu family.
For a day and a half, Lian Li and Xue Shufan had a wonderful time. When Lian Li was tired from playing, Jin Shi Yue had already arranged their trip to Taipei.
Normally, after leaving a military region, especially for someone in a high-ranking position, there would be a declassification period for important secrets, during which they couldn’t leave the mainland.

As they boarded the plane to Taipei, Lian Li looked at the blue sky and white clouds outside the window and suddenly remembered Xue Shufan’s words.
She turned her head and looked at the man leaning casually against the seat beside her, blinking her eyelashes very slowly.
Perhaps he wasn’t as arbitrary as she imagined.

“Did you come to Taipei often before?”
“No,” Lian Li said after thinking. “Only four times. The first two were with my dad, and the last two were by myself. Lian Li spoke more about the past events involving Lian Jingcheng. “The first time I came to Taipei, I wanted to bring stones back to the Capital City and was almost detained… I was quite unhappy then. The plane landed safely at Songshan Airport.
The person who came to pick them up was Li Ye. Li Ye had arrived in Taipei from the Capital City the day before and had made all the arrangements.
Lian Li praised him: “So capable.”
The weather was hot. Lian Li got off the plane and immediately got into the sedan heading to the hotel, so she didn’t stay outdoors and thus didn’t realize how hot it actually was.
Although the streets of Taipei were not as wide as those in mainland cities, the main roads and streets were neat, tidy, and clean.
On the way to the hotel, Lian Li told Jin Shi Yue that the two places she always visited when she came to Taiwan were Hualien Qixingtan and New Taipei Jiufen, which was said to be the inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki’s animations. If time wasn’t tight, she would occasionally visit Kenting Park and Taroko Park.
This time, she had a longer stay, so she could visit them all.
Li Ye sat in the front passenger seat, glanced at the driver in the driver’s seat, and then looked back at the couple in love through the rearview mirror.
The Second Young Master and Miss Lian looked exactly like newlyweds on their honeymoon.
