Chapter 202: Not Impressed
Wan Jing followed Li Xiaonan out and got into the cart, which slowly began to move.
Wan Jing bowed and stretched her head out, almost pressing it against Li Xiaonan’s face, looking her over.
“What are you looking at!” Li Xiaonan leaned back, annoyed by her stare.
“Can I ask?” Wan Jing pulled back a little.
“You want to ask what the Eldest Madam told me, right.” Li Xiaonan stretched her neck to look at where the pastries were.
“From when you got off the cart to getting back on, less than half an hour, and you can still eat?” Wan Jing leaned over to pick up a pastry.
“The Eldest Madam is gone, and the Young Lord is gone. Who knows when I’ll get to eat again.” Li Xiaonan took the pastry dish from Wan Jing’s hand and ate a mochi first.
“If you want to eat, you could have just said you wanted to come read. Our Young Lord instructed me and the library before he left.” Wan Jing said irritably.
“I have business, I’m very busy, I don’t have time to read.” Li Xiaonan swallowed the mochi in her mouth and sighed.
“What did she say to you?” Wan Jing poured a cup of tea and pushed it in front of Li Xiaonan.
“If you knew, and your Young Lord asked, wouldn’t you have to answer?” Li Xiaonan asked first.
“If I had been serving by your side at the time and heard it, and the Young Lord asked, I would have had to answer. But I didn’t hear it, did I!
“What we’re saying between us~” Wan Jing drew out her words, chuckling, “Shi Gun even told me he was acting crazy. What’s said in private doesn’t count as a task.”
“That’s good. The Eldest Madam said she wanted to write to me, so I told her to mail the letter to you, and you’d forward it to me.” Li Xiaonan lowered her voice. “The Eldest Madam also asked if I was planning to marry your Young Lord.”
Wan Jing choked, “She really dares to think that!”
“Exactly, I’m not interested in your Young Lord at all.” Li Xiaonan took a sip of tea.
Wan Jing was stunned by Li Xiaonan’s words. After a moment, she reacted and exclaimed, “You really dare to think that! I meant, our Young Lord isn’t interested in you!”
“Isn’t it the same? I’m not interested in him, and he’s not interested in me.”
“How can that be the same! Never mind, I won’t argue with you. Continue!” Wan Jing’s eyes sparkled with gossip.
“I just said that, I’m not interested in the Young Lord, and the Eldest Madam said she’d write to me. That’s it.” Li Xiaonan said with a smile.
Wan Jing was bewildered, “That’s it? That’s all? Someone like the Eldest Madam, called you over just to ask that?”
“Isn’t this a big deal?” Li Xiaonan asked with a serious expression.
“Yes! It’s quite a big deal.” Wan Jing nodded. “Didn’t you say she gave up? Why did she specifically call you over to ask this? Hearing you say you weren’t interested in the Young Lord, she wanted to write to you. Is it because she doesn’t trust you, or because she knows you could never marry our Young Lord, that she’s writing to you?”
“I think she trusts me quite a bit, she wants to write to me~” Li Xiaonan drew out her words and chuckled, “If I were to marry your Young Lord, she’d definitely write. If I can’t marry him, we’re still friends, right? Anyway, it’s better to write than not to write.”
Wan Jing listened, frowning, even more confused, “I don’t understand. What exactly does she mean? I’m telling you, that Eldest Madam, every sentence she says has seven or eight meanings. She’s not like you; she never says useless words or does useless things!”
“Does that mean everything I say is useless and everything I do is useless?” Li Xiaonan glared at Wan Jing.
“Sigh, what you say isn’t useless, you just say things that cause trouble!” Wan Jing sighed deeply.
Li Xiaonan choked, glared at Wan Jing again, and picked up the dish to continue eating mochi.
This mochi is really delicious!
“Why aren’t you interested in our Young Lord? Our Young Lord is so handsome! Both majestic and handsome.” Wan Jing rested her chin on her hand, looking puzzled.
“Then are you interested in your Young Lord?” Li Xiaonan retorted.
“How could I be interested in him!” Wan Jing blurted out.
“Then why aren’t you interested in your Young Lord? Your Young Lord is so handsome!” Li Xiaonan slanted a look at Wan Jing.
“If I were interested in our Young Lord, I could only be a concubine, and I don’t want to be a concubine.” Wan Jing explained seriously.
“So you are interested in your Young Lord, but because you don’t want to be a concubine, you’re giving him up reluctantly?” Li Xiaonan leaned forward to look at Wan Jing.
“I’m not interested at all! Right, I’m not interested either.” Wan Jing frowned, puzzled again, “It’s strange, why are neither of us interested in the Young Lord? Our Young Lord is famously good in every way, so handsome!”
“I also find it strange, but it’s best not to be interested. If one were, it would be too painful.” Li Xiaonan looked at the empty mochi dish.
Sigh, after eating such delicious mochi, other mochi taste like wax, and it’s the same with people.
………………………………
Seizing an opportunity when Matchmaker Miao was going to the Cao family to arrange a marriage, the Wu family’s second and third daughters invited their Mother out to enjoy the autumn scenery and have tea and pastries.
Aunt Wu, as usual, brought along the current Foreman’s daughter, Wu Family Fourth Sister.
This was something the two Wu sisters had long anticipated, as they had both been Foreman’s daughters before.
The lakeside Tea House chosen by Wu Third Sister was half a storytelling venue. Wu Fourth Sister loved listening to storytelling, so Wu Third Sister ordered a pot of tea and a dish of pastries for her sister, arranging for her to listen to stories.
Wu Second Sister and Wu Third Sister accompanied their Mother, sitting at a tea table by the lake, enjoying the autumn lake view and chatting over tea.
“Fourth Sister is getting more and more beautiful. I think she’s much prettier than me and Second Sister, almost as pretty as Eldest Sister.” Wu Third Sister started the conversation.
“Indeed. Has Fourth Sister found a suitable match?” Wu Second Sister asked with a smile, cracking melon seeds.
“Your Matchmaker Miao has found two families. I’ll discuss them with you.” Aunt Wu said with a happy smile. “One is the Zhao family near the Prefectural School. The Zhao family Master is a Steward at the Prefectural School, and all matters concerning the Prefectural School’s procurement are in his hands.”
Aunt Wu lowered her voice and added.
“Your Matchmaker Miao said that although the Zhao family doesn’t show off, they have a deep family fortune. The Zhao family Young Master has been studying at the attached school of the Prefectural School. He’s smart, but still a bit short of becoming a Xiucai Scholar, according to Headmaster Dong of the Prefectural School.”
“The Zhao family Master is a sensible man, so he had his Young Master apprentice under Doctor Qi. He became his apprentice two years ago, and now he can prescribe simple remedies. The Zhao family Young Master is handsome and refined, very pleasing to the eye. I like this family the most!”
Aunt Wu said, smiling.
Wu Second Sister and Wu Third Sister exchanged glances.
“What about the second family? Mother, please tell us about the second family.” Wu Third Sister said with a knowing smile.
“The second family is the eldest son of the Wu family’s lantern shop. Their eldest son has studied for a few years, and his skill in making lanterns has already surpassed his father’s.”
“Your Matchmaker Miao said that Wu Da Lang not only has good craftsmanship, but in terms of doing business, he’s probably much better than Yu Da Lang.”
“The Wu family has a lantern shop in Linhai Town and another one in Hangcheng. Your Matchmaker Miao said that in terms of family fortune, the Wu family is much stronger than the Zhao family, but the Wu family lacks scholarly refinement, which is a disadvantage compared to the Zhao family. Your Matchmaker Miao said that in another generation, the Zhao family will definitely produce a Xiucai Scholar.”
“I think the Zhao family is good. What do you think?” Aunt Wu looked at her two daughters.
