Chapter 144: Launch Announcement
Thanks to the reader classmates who have always supported this book, thanks to Qidian, thanks to the cute editor Little Round. That’s right, this book is finally on shelves. The official shelving time is tomorrow noon, so the next chapter will update tomorrow afternoon.
I heard that shelving testimonials are mainly used to sell misery… Unfortunately, this book is a comedy, selling too miserably wouldn’t be quite appropriate, so I’ll hold back a bit and just share some feelings.
Before coming to Qidian, my pen name was ‘Bei Gui’, which is why some old readers call me ‘Bei Ji’ or ‘Er Tu’. Of course, my gender is male, calling me ‘Bei Ji’ is just everyone’s mischievous fun wanting to see cross-dressing.
On another obscure small website, I wrote the site’s number one subscription book. Unfortunately, that small website’s rule was to open subscriptions only after completion, so even as site-wide number one, the subscription income was just negligible odd change. And later, for certain reasons, the entire book was banned, and the IP adaptation that was halfway done fell through.
After writing books for several years, I’ve had plenty of similar setbacks, like being toyed with by another website that claimed to have “big moves” and such, too many to count. If I had to say what I learned from it, it’s to never have unrealistic expectations for the future. Setting expectations a bit lower is always harmless, and it’s also better for mental health.
In short, before coming to Qidian, most of the manuscript fees I got were buyout fees. So I didn’t dare come to Qidian before, because it relies on readers’ genuine subscriptions… Just thinking about it makes me uneasy.
Is it really written well enough? Can it make people willingly pay?
This book《everyone wants to slaughter me》, at the beginning of writing, I had no expectations at all, not even submitting to an editor’s email like with the previous flop book, but directly posting it. At the start of posting, I even prepared for not signing and getting zero money. Being able to sign and get recommendations, I must thank the Qidian platform and editor Little Round’s favor.
“First cast aside all unnecessary distractions, then you can create more interesting things.” — That was my initial thought, perhaps with a bit of self-abandonment?
Now it seems, although this novel has just begun and the asura field hasn’t fully unfolded, personally I think it’s barely interesting enough. Of course, it has many flaws, but given web novel creation modes and update requirements, perfection is unrealistic anyway; the author can only guarantee to do his best.
Then to explain a bit, this book’s positioning is light comedy.
If we draw a target, defining the bullseye ten-ring as reality, then almost all fictional works will deviate to some extent, just in different directions.
For example, same opening a door: in horror movies, the character opens the door and bumps into a ghost right away; in kung fu films, the protagonist kicks the door open with one foot and fights the enemy; comedy characters might trip right after opening the door, and when getting up, their belt falls off, revealing the blue-and-white striped triangle undies inside despite being a tough guy.
In short, different types of works have different character behavior logic, and web novels are the same. The protagonist of “Don’t Bully the Young Poor” and the protagonist of silly funny writing are completely different styles; same deviation from reality, but different directions.
And even for the same comedy, same funny works, the degree of deviation differs.
For example《Friends》,《Home with Kids》, they might be at the eight-ring to nine-ring position, where characters’ words and actions don’t deviate much from reality, meaning you can encounter similar real people and events in reality. While《Tom and Jerry》 runs to two-ring to three rings, where audiences see Jerry unable to die no matter what, Tom splitting a big tree with his crotch. By reality standards, these are obviously unreasonable, but very interesting.
For comedy, interesting is the most important.
My original intent was to write a daily comedy at the six-ring to seven-ring position, which is also where many light novels are. Deviating too much from reality is hard to control and lacks immersion; too close to reality is tiring to write, and jokes easily fall flat. But after starting to write, past creation habits kept pulling me, and the work’s landing point sometimes involuntarily neared the bullseye, sometimes slightly deviated under my deliberate correction…
But in the end, in my view, as long as it’s self-consistent within a certain range, the work’s structure stands.
This book won’t have deus ex machina either. In other words, the so-called time-space management bureau, hamster(administrator)’s essence, these foreshadowings will all get a complete explanation before the ending. Of course before that, Wang Heng’s “miserable” life is the book’s main line; hope everyone can read happily, that’s enough.
Speaking of which, let me talk about this book’s extra chapter rules. Since I’m not a full-time writer, plus this book has no brainless strategies to copy, writing speed definitely won’t be too fast.
But the shelving explosion update is definitely happening, five chapters.
Then, this book now has over forty thousand collections; assuming one in ten subscribes, that’s three thousand average subscription. At three thousand average subscription, extra chapter; every additional five hundred, one extra chapter; for rewards, every additional sect leader or grandmaster one extra, alliance leader two extras.
This rule is long-term effective; if can’t finish short-term, owe it and make up on weekends or holidays when free.
Originally, I wanted to set the extra chapter rules even lower, but thinking about the company’s tasks, um… better be a bit cautious, lest I can’t pay back the debt and end up cross-dressing to repay like back then, that would be too terrifying.
Anyway, that’s it; hope readers who made it here and can keep reading will subscribe to the genuine version as much as possible if they can, please.
Oh right, one more thing.
