Chapter 282: “getting Cocky”
Sister Xia was taken away, and before leaving, she stared at Lin Zhao with a sinister look in her eyes, thinking of a thousand ways to make her regret it.
No sooner had she thought that than her internal organs started hurting intensely for no reason, as if her body was being corroded by some liquid. It hurt so much she couldn’t stand up.
She hunched over, trying to relieve the pain, but it was in vain.
“It hurts! Doctor, take me to see a doctor!”
In just a few seconds, Sister Xia was drenched in sweat from the pain, her eyes bloodshot, lips pale, and her whole body shaking uncontrollably.
She thought she was speaking loudly, but her voice was as faint as a mosquito’s buzz. The train police didn’t hear her at all. As for her weakness… he just thought it was the criminal pretending.
“Don’t even think about running; you can’t escape. Hurry up and go!” The train police impatiently pushed the human trafficker whom everyone wanted to hit.
He worked on the train and had seen too many families ruined by human traffickers; he despised such people. He hadn’t beaten her because of his duty, because she was a woman, and because she was bruised and swollen, barely able to stand—he was afraid of legal consequences.
Sister Xia couldn’t hear the train police’s words, nor the clanging of the train moving forward. She couldn’t muster any strength and could only feel the pain of her displaced internal organs.
She couldn’t straighten up and knelt down weakly. Her handcuffed hands patted her stomach again and again.
She looked like she was going mad.
The train police was puzzled, grabbed the criminal’s arm to pull her up, and said impatiently, “Stop pretending! You people are full of tricks; I’ve seen too many.”
The person on the ground didn’t get up.
The train police frowned, squatted down to check, and saw the criminal’s face as white as paper, sweat pouring out, teeth clenched tightly making a clattering sound, and blood trickling from the corner of her mouth.
“This…”
He was startled, thinking the human trafficker had some illness, and quickly called the conductor to take her to the resting room and find a doctor to treat her.
The doctor on the train was bandaging Lin Zhao and had no time for the heinous human trafficker.
She glanced faintly at the conductor. “About to die? If there’s no life-threatening danger, let her wait; I haven’t finished here.”
After saying that, she turned her gaze back to Lin Zhao’s arm. The wound was being treated; the fair, delicate skin was split open with a deep gash, flesh turned out, quite a bit of blood had flowed, and even after applying hemostatic medicine, blood was still seeping out. It looked painful just to see.
The female hero hadn’t made a sound; she was truly a heroine among women.
“What does a criminal matter? Comrade Lin’s injury is what matters.” The doctor said expressionlessly.
She had no compassion for such great villains.
Not to mention she lacked a doctor’s benevolence; some people didn’t deserve it. They didn’t even deserve to be called human.
The conductor also saw the wound on the female hero’s arm—it was so deep that she, who was faint-hearted about blood, nearly fainted.
She quickly looked away.
“You treat Comrade Lin first; I’m not in a hurry, not at all.”
As for the criminal, wasn’t she just enduring pain? She wouldn’t die in a moment.
Did the person who abducted her children and broke up families feel pain?
It was just retribution; she deserved it!
The female doctor looked at Lin Zhao with admiration and gentleness. “Before the wound heals, don’t use this arm, keep it dry, change the medicine frequently, and be careful of infection.”
Lin Zhao nodded. “Thank you, comrade.”
“It’s what I should do.” The female doctor packed up the bloodied gauze and medicine powder.
After finishing, she said to the conductor, “Let’s go.”
The conductor took two steps, turned back, and asked Lin Zhao, “Do you need me to take you back to the carriage?”
Lin Zhao shook her head. “No need. I can manage.”
“Then be careful, watch your arm, and call me if anything happens.” The female conductor’s tone was concerned.
“Okay, thank you.”
Lin Zhao navigated through the crowded passengers and returned to the carriage.
She knocked on the sliding door.
A vigilant voice came from inside.
“Who is it?” Sister-in-law Tong held the hoe.
“It’s me.”
Oh, it was Lin Meizi.
She put away the hoe and hurriedly opened the door.
“Lin Meizi, you’re finally back! If you didn’t come back soon, I wouldn’t be able to hold back your two boys anymore!”
Seeing Lin Zhao return safely, Sister-in-law Tong let out a long sigh of relief.
Lin Zhao stepped sideways into the carriage and said thanks.
Yu Baoheng Bao were very obedient to their mother and lay side by side on the upper bunk, their identical smiling faces full of worry.
Hearing the familiar voice, they jumped up and climbed down nimbly.
Yu Bao in front, Heng Bao behind.
The two little boys stood in front of Lin Zhao almost simultaneously.
“Lin Meizi, nothing happened outside, right? I heard people arguing; what were they saying?” Sister-in-law Tong asked.
Lin Zhao was about to speak when Yu Bao exclaimed in shock, “Mom, what happened to your arm?”
Sister-in-law Tong looked over and saw the gauze wrapped around Lin Meizi’s arm. She cried out, fussing loudly, “Lin Meizi, you’re injured? What happened? Did you confront the human trafficker?! Weren’t there train police? How did they let a girl like you charge ahead? Are you okay?”
Country women rarely had soft voices; Sister-in-law Tong’s voice was particularly loud, which sounded a bit noisy, but Lin Zhao could hear the concern in it.
“It’s nothing, just a cut; it’ll heal in a few days.” Lin Zhao said nonchalantly.
Tears welled up in Yu Bao and Heng Bao’s eyes.
“Mom, who hurt you? Did the public security uncle catch her?” Yu Bao clenched his little fist in anger, wanting to fight the person who hurt his mom, but not knowing who, he stomped his foot hard.
“Yes, yes, yes.” Lin Zhao saw Da Zai was furious. “The human trafficker has been caught and won’t harm anyone anymore.”
Yu Bao stared at his mom’s injured arm, tears falling pat pat, then wiped them away fiercely. “Mom, rest well; I’ll feed you rice and water.”
His mind was blank with anger and could only think of that.
“I can too!” Heng Bao felt for the first time that he was growing too slowly and decided to eat an extra bowl of rice from now on to grow as tall as dad soon and be mom’s support.
“Mom, does it hurt?” The little friend didn’t dare touch Lin Zhao’s arm; his small body stiffened as he bent down and blew on the gauze.
“Stupid!” Yu Bao was emotionally unstable and very angry. He said, “Mom’s arm was slashed; how could it not hurt? It must hurt a lot.”
“Yu Bao, you can’t call your younger brother stupid.” Lin Zhao pinched her son’s fair little face with her good hand, her voice gentle. “I know you care about me, but my arm injury has nothing to do with your younger brother. You can’t take out your temper on him, okay?”
Yu Bao regretted his outburst after losing his temper and apologized to his younger brother upon hearing mom’s guidance.
Heng Bao waved his hand carelessly. “It’s fine; I know big brother is worried about mom.”
His younger brother’s generosity made Yu Bao feel a bit guilty.
“Heng Bao, tomorrow big brother will give you a piece of milk candy.”
Heng Bao was a glutton and didn’t dwell on it, just happy. “Okay, big brother is the best.”
Lin Zhao’s lips curved slightly.
Sister-in-law Tong watched with envy. She had been married for years and only had a sickly son with a shy temperament like a little girl; if ignored, he could go a day without speaking. There was really no way around it.
Looking at the lively scene opposite, she was incredibly envious!
Sister-in-law Tong’s sister-in-law noticed her thoughts and smiled. “Sister-in-law, don’t envy; you still have a chance.”
What chance? The chance to have a second, third, or fourth child.
Sister-in-law Tong’s face flushed, and she lightly pinched her sister-in-law’s face.
“What are you saying? You’re just an unmarried girl yourself, and you’re not embarrassed.”
Her sister-in-law didn’t mind and said straightforwardly, “It’s human nature; what’s there to be embarrassed about? Sister-in-law, when you have another child, I’ll help take care of it.”
Sister-in-law Tong whispered, “Don’t talk about that; your marriage is the top priority.”
Yes, her sister-in-law was accompanying the army with her, at the parents-in-law’s suggestion, to find a good match for her in the troops.
Sister-in-law Tong had no objection; her sister-in-law had a good temperament, they got along well, and she hoped her sister-in-law would marry into a good family.
The Tong family sister-in-law and sister-in-law spoke softly.
Over there, Yu Bao touched the lunchbox; the food inside was still warm. He opened it, scooped a big spoonful of rice and vegetables, and fed it to Lin Zhao’s mouth. “Mom, your arm hurts; I’ll feed you.”
Facing her son’s face full of persistence, Lin Zhao didn’t refuse and opened her mouth obediently.
“My son has grown up and can take care of mom now.” She looked at the twins tenderly, full of relief.
The praise made the two little boys’ faces flush red; they were very happy.
“Have you two eaten enough? I see there’s still a lot of food left; did you barely eat? Want to eat more?” Lin Zhao asked her two boys.
Heng Bao had been influenced by his brother earlier and had no appetite, but now seeing his mom eat enjoyably, he said greedily, “I want a few bites of potato.”
He wanted meat more, but felt mom needed it more since she lost blood; he wouldn’t compete.
“Not craving meat anymore?” Lin Zhao asked curiously.
Not like her gluttonous Er Zai.
“Mom eat.” Heng Bao said, “I’ll eat anything; mom needs to eat more meat to replenish the blood she lost.”
Lin Zhao swallowed the rice in her mouth and hugged her son with her good arm.
“Truly mom’s filial son!”
She said, “There’s so much; I can’t finish it. You two need to eat too, or it’ll spoil.”
The two little friends indeed weren’t full and agreed. The mother and sons finished the meal.
That night, Yu Bao and Heng Bao didn’t fuss to sleep with Lin Zhao; the brothers obediently climbed to the upper bunk.
Yu Bao hung his head down and said worriedly, “Mom, call me if you need help; I can help you.”
Lin Zhao lay on the lower bunk, eyes slightly closed. Hearing her big son’s words, a smile appeared on her lips.
She was already asleep; what could happen?
“Got it; go to sleep.”
The train rocked along with quite a bit of noise; it was boring on board, so mostly everyone slept.
Over the next two days, the conductor delivered meals on time to Lin Zhao’s carriage. Except for using the toilet, she hardly left the carriage.
Yu Bao and Heng Bao went to the toilet with Sister-in-law Tong.
After learning of Lin Zhao’s heroic feat in subduing the human trafficker, Sister-in-law Tong admired her immensely and wished she could handle everything for her.
…
Back to the story.
The female doctor arrived unhurriedly at where Sister Xia was held.
She set down her medical kit, did a check-up, and said impatiently, “There’s nothing wrong; you called me here to waste time?”
By now, Sister Xia had recovered; that terrifying pain in her internal organs felt like a nightmare.
“Impossible!” she said. “Earlier here, here, here… it all hurt.”
She pointed all over her body and excitedly slapped the table.
“It must be that bitch who poisoned me; otherwise, I wouldn’t be like that. Bring her here, make her give me the antidote, or else…”
Sister Xia’s mind flashed with many vicious revenge methods again.
As soon as she thought that, the pain that had just subsided spread again. She bent over, her face full of bulging veins from the agony, and reached for the female doctor’s sleeve.
“It hurts…” Again, it hurt too much to speak.
The doctor saw the criminal didn’t seem to be faking and checked her again.
Still no issue found.
“What’s going on?” The young train police couldn’t hold back and asked.
The doctor shook her head. “Not sure.”
Strange.
Her pulse was strong; she didn’t seem ill, yet she looked like she was enduring immense pain.
The female doctor suspected she was faking it to escape when the train police wasn’t watching.
This person dared to jump on a train and stabbed Comrade Lin opportunistically; what wouldn’t she do?
“Faking it…”
Sister Xia was clearly curled up like a shrimp in pain, ears ringing so she couldn’t even hear the train noise, but she distinctly heard the doctor’s three words.
She nearly fainted from anger.
Faking? Try faking it yourself! It really hurts!!
Compared to the criminal, the train police trusted the doctor more and gave the person on the bed an unkind look.
He called his colleague and left, locked the door, and ignored Sister Xia.
As long as she didn’t die; anyway, the meaning of her being alive was just… to spit out her accomplices.
Lin Zhao had stuffed a retaliatory pill from the lucky draw into Sister Xia’s mouth and put her out of her mind.
As soon as that person harbored any malicious thoughts to harm others, she would suffer, and the pain would gradually intensify. She would have hard days ahead.
Wake up, eat, sleep, all the way shaking along, Lin Zhao and the others finally arrived at their destination.
The train announcement sounded.
“Yu Bao, Heng Bao, get up and pack; we’re getting off soon!”
The two boys had lain enough; their limbs were stiff. The brothers quickly got down and packed their things orderly and efficiently.
“Mom, don’t move; Heng Bao and I will pack.” Yu Bao turned to look at Lin Zhao.
Heng Bao also said, “Right, be careful with your arm.”
Thinking he would see dad soon, he was so excited his spirits soared, floating upside down. “If you’re not obedient, I’ll tell dad later and have him scold you.”
Yu Bao’s eyes flickered, adding, “…and little uncle!”
Lin Zhao: “…”
“You two are really full of yourselves!”
Heng Bao clamped his arms like butterfly wings flapping and said, “Yeah, yeah, I’m floating.”
After the antics, without waiting for his brother to urge, he hurried to help pack.
Lin Zhao’s arm wound hadn’t healed; the train staff took good care of her. Two train police helped with the luggage and escorted them off the station.
Gu Chenghuai arrived half an hour early. When the train came, he subconsciously straightened his military uniform.
Confirming he looked proper, his deep, dark eyes looked toward the train’s direction.
The train stopped, and a dense crowd surged out.
Relying on his height and long legs, he searched for his wife and children.
One minute passed; none seen.
Three minutes passed; still not found.
Gu Chenghuai frowned.
Sun Yeli was dragged along to help and, seeing the worry on his comrade’s face, said, “Sister-in-law has two kids and luggage; she definitely won’t squeeze with the crowd. She’s probably at the back; wait patiently.”
“Mm.” Gu Chenghuai responded, his gaze still fixed tightly on the crowd.
“Huh, I see identical twins!!” Sun Yeli patted his comrade’s shoulder and pointed to the left front. “Aren’t those your two treasures?”
