Chapter 224: I Will Forge A Path Even If The Sky Crumbles
Liancheng involuntarily stood up, countless nerves constricting, her limbs spasming uncontrollably.
She suddenly realized that the Mo family had brought all their known and unknown secrets into the open, ripping them apart so abruptly that Liang Chaosu had no time to react or make any moves.
This, instead, was the best juncture.
Liang Chaosu also perceived this; under everyone’s gaze, he wrapped his arm around Liancheng’s waist, his chest pressing tightly against her back, his form completely overlapping with hers.
Possessiveness, control, not allowing any intrusion.
“Since Manager Lin has requested police involvement and the identification can no longer proceed, may we leave?”
Liancheng remained stiff and unresponsive. Her back was to Liang Chaosu; she didn’t struggle or speak out in opposition.
Liang Chaosu tightened his arm, knowing full well she was staring at Lin Xianzi, waiting for her reaction.
His gaze shifted from Liancheng, and without changing his expression, he narrowed his eyes and looked back at Lin Xianzi.
Lin Xianzi’s face was extremely grim. The longer she remained silent, the more pronounced Mo Shicheng’s smile became.
The air in the VIP lounge was almost deathly silent, filled with the scent of gunpowder, so thick and oppressive that it seemed the slightest disturbance would ignite sparks and cause an explosion.
Lin Lan suddenly stepped forward a few paces and placed her hands on Lin Xianzi’s shoulders. “What he said makes sense. The arrest warrant has been issued, and the police will be here soon. Let’s handle this matter first. Regarding the authenticity of the remains, I will send someone to investigate immediately. If there are issues, Lian Yingying and Liang Liancheng have appeared, and another identification can be done at any time.”
Liancheng’s legs felt weak for an instant; her heart, which had been pounding, plummeted back to solid ground.
She was surprised, yet not entirely surprised.
Liang Chaosu’s perception was sharp, and he had never been wrong; he had foreseen that Lin Xianzi would weigh the pros and cons.
Liancheng also understood that Lin Xianzi had clearly been planning for many years and had finally made significant progress. The delicate balance of various forces involved was such that any move could have widespread repercussions, and it couldn’t withstand even the slightest change.
Mo Shifu tapped the armrest of his wheelchair. The private doctor quickly leaned in to whisper his instructions. “Old Mr. Mo disagrees. The identification must yield a result today.”
Mo Shicheng let out a laugh and swiped his phone screen. “Dad, I’ll have the doctor come back to collect new samples.”
Liancheng felt the arm around her waist suddenly tighten, her fingers almost digging into his skin, the pressure so intense it caused a slight tremor. The man’s voice was hoarsely indistinct.
“Manager Lin’s return to Hong Kong was to retaliate against Mo Shicheng on familiar ground. Then why did Mo Shicheng bring out Lian Yingying for family recognition? Liancheng, the Mo family is not that simple. Your desperate desire to leave me will only lead you into another inferno.”
Liancheng tilted her head up. Outside, dark clouds obscured the sun, and the light had lost its warmth, leaving only the stark, blinding whiteness of the artificial lighting. He lowered his head; from his thick, dark eyelashes to his obsidian pupils, so close they seemed to crackle with destructive waves, incredibly profound.
“To me, you are the biggest inferno.”
Liang Chaosu stared at her, unblinking. With every rise and fall of his breath, his chest pressed firmly against her, his heartbeat vibrating like a drum.
Instead, he began to smile.
His eyebrows and the corners of his lips clearly formed a smile, yet it was like the edge of a knife, an arrow – the signal of acceptance of defeat and preparation for the next counterattack.
“Liancheng, if I could gather strength for four years, I can strive for another ten. Even if the heavens crumble, I will carve out a path and find you.”
Liancheng trembled involuntarily, her pores tightening, raising goosebumps all over her body.
Liang Chaosu no longer held back and kissed her eyes.
“Don’t be afraid. At least you don’t have to be afraid now.”
Liancheng tried to pry his arm away, but the man didn’t budge. His attention seemed entirely focused on her, or perhaps he simply didn’t care. Lian Yingying’s shocked gasp, Mo Shicheng’s scrutiny, Lin Xianzi’s look of disgust – he moved closer. Liancheng was trapped in his embrace, her blood almost frozen.
He laughed out loud. “They investigated us long ago and know more or less what’s going on.”
Liancheng felt an overwhelming suffocation, her limbs trembling uncontrollably. She struggled with all her might, her fingernails digging deeply into his hand, drawing bright red blood streaks.
The VIP lounge door was suddenly pushed open. Doctors and police arrived simultaneously, two clearly defined teams – black and white. The police went to Lin Xianzi’s side, while the doctors found Mo Shicheng.
Afterward, the doctors drew blood again, and the police took Mo Shicheng away.
The room quickly became crowded then swiftly deserted. This identification was conducted in this laboratory, with Mo Shifu’s private doctor present throughout. Three hours later, the private doctor returned to the VIP lounge.
“Based on the existing data and DNA analysis results, it supports the identification of Lian Yingying as the biological daughter of the person being identified, Lin Xianzi.”
A moment of dead silence.
Liancheng instinctively looked at Liang Chaosu. A flicker of obvious surprise crossed his eyes – a physiological reaction to the sudden revelation, which vanished instantly as he lowered his eyelids, concealing his expression.
Lin Xianzi was also stunned. “Who?”
Mo Shifu raised his hand. The private doctor handed him the identification results and helped him sit up.
Lian Yingying was almost at a loss. The initial shock subsided, replaced by a surge of hidden excitement. She desperately tried to control her expression but couldn’t, her mouth twitching as she stared intently at Mo Shifu.
Mo Shifu finished reading the report. His voice was weak, but his words were firm: “We will discuss Ah Cheng’s matter later. You acknowledge Yingying, and with Jianhong having an heir, the Mo clan will have a legitimate successor.”
Lin Xianzi could not agree. Mo Shicheng bringing in Lian Yingying was clearly his backup plan. “One identification doesn’t prove anything. Based on appearance alone, Liancheng is more like me.”
The private doctor suddenly interjected, “Are you suspecting I tampered with it?”
The private doctor was loyal to Mo Shifu and only acted on his instructions.
Suspecting the private doctor was equivalent to suspecting Mo Shifu.
Lin Xianzi didn’t take the bait, preparing to change her argument, when her phone suddenly rang.
Liancheng stood far away, but the room was too quiet. After Lin Xianzi answered, a faint male voice could be heard from the earpiece, mentioning a pharmaceutical company… medicine… widespread adverse reactions…
The more the male voice reported, the tighter Lin Xianzi gripped her phone, her knuckles turning pale from the force, veins bulging on the back of her hand.
The next second, her stern gaze swept over.
Liancheng didn’t know how to describe the complex and somber look in her eyes. She watched as she hung up the phone, and when she spoke again, she was completely calm.
“Since Dr. Liu personally supervised, the identification is undoubtedly valid.”
The verdict was sealed.
The light outside grew dimmer, and the wind picked up. Lian Yingying’s eyes lit up with eagerness as she rushed towards Lin Xianzi, stopping before her and forming the word “Mom” with her lips, her voice hesitant as she said, “Ms. Lin—”
Lin Xianzi reached out and took her hand, her other hand covering Lian Yingying’s. “Why do you still call me Ms. Lin? I’m your mom.”
I’m your mom.
Liancheng’s eyes welled up uncontrollably, a piece of her heart suddenly ripped away, bleeding profusely, causing her a bewildered pain.
For the past four years, she had clearly grown accustomed to this feeling. She had also spared no effort in trying to mend it, but it seemed all her efforts were in vain.
Her heartbeat grew more active, but why did the emptiness feel so desolate?
“Mom.” Lian Yingying could no longer hold back and threw herself into Lin Xianzi’s arms, hugging her waist tightly. From sobs, she broke into painful cries.
“I thought… I thought I had no destiny for family. After having a mom, I became an aunt again. It was like having a home, yet not having one. Mom—”
Liancheng’s pupils constricted.
Having a mom, and then not having a mom.
Having a home, and then not having a home.
