Chapter 273: Teammates’ Assists
Xiao Fei left without waiting for Chang Ning’s response.
Only the faint fragrance in the elevator and the dazed Chang Ning could prove that something unspeakable to outsiders had happened here.
From that day on, whenever Chang Ning had free time, he would involuntarily zone out, mumbling words no one could understand.
“What did she mean by that sentence?”
“I know she’s single, so what?”
……
Since the conversation in the elevator yesterday, Chang Ning hadn’t seen Xiao Fei again.
Even dinner last night and breakfast today were gotten by Chang Ning himself from the restaurant.
Eating the last apple, Chang Ning was still thinking about the meaning of what Xiao Fei said yesterday.
Right, the apples he was eating now were also brought by Xiao Fei when she came to visit him that day.
“What are you thinking about, so absorbed?”
Hearing someone speak, Chang Ning looked up.
“Yo, isn’t this Xiao Geng?”
“And us too.”
Ostrich poked his head out from behind Geng Jihui, looking at Chang Ning.
“How did you guys get here?”
Chang Ning said something pointless.
“Isn’t that obvious? Of course to visit you and Xiao Zhuang.”
Qiang Zi plopped down on the edge of Chang Ning’s hospital bed, sizing up the hospital room.
“Not bad, you’re in a single room, buddy.”
“Jealous? I can switch with you.”
Chang Ning wasn’t about to indulge Qiang Zi; this guy was just teasing him.
“We asked Gao Zhong Dui for leave before coming, but he only told us your location. We’ll need you to guide us to Xiao Zhuang later.”
Geng Jihui explained the reason and assigned the mission to Chang Ning.
He was always so straightforward.
“No problem, let’s go now.”
With that, Chang Ning led the group out of the hospital room to Xiao Zhuang’s place.
Of course, when passing the nurse station, they had to report to them; we can’t cause trouble for people.
As soon as the group entered the lobby, everyone except Chang Ning looked grim and turned toward the inpatient department entrance.
What was going on?
A captain company commander was approaching them carrying a bag of fruit.
Seeing this, Chang Ning suddenly understood.
Although he hadn’t met this new company commander in person during the exercise, he had heard about him early on, and plus he remembered the related plot; they were old acquaintances without meeting.
“That’s the new company commander of Night Tiger Reconnaissance Company, right?”
Chang Ning lightly nudged Lao Pao beside him.
“Yeah, he’s the one who nearly annihilated us in the exercise.”
“Everyone, even a defeated general has the demeanor of one; don’t embarrass us.”
Geng Jihui knew his buddies; if he didn’t warn them ahead, who knows what trouble they might cause.
Then, he flashed a smile and shook hands with Captain Lin.
“Hello, I’m Geng Jihui of Wolf Fang Special Forces Detachment.”
“Oh, hello.
We’re acquainted through battle now. In the exercise, you guys left us covered in dirt; worthy of being our military region’s sharp blade.”
Here, Captain Lin was sincerely praising these few from Lone Wolf B Squad; it was all true, and he truly valued this group from the bottom of his heart.
At the same time, after the exercise ended, he hadn’t skimped on studying them, aiming to annihilate Wolf Fang in the next exercise.
“Let’s learn from each other.”
Geng Jihui said with a smile.
“I have a comrade hospitalized here, so I’ll head out first.”
After chatting briefly with Lone Wolf and the others, Captain Lin suggested parting; he didn’t ask why this group was at the hospital.
Curiosity shouldn’t be too strong, especially in the military unit.
“This new company commander has quite the personality; I like it.”
In the short few minutes of contact, the temperament and mindset Captain Lin showed made him impossible to dislike.
This guy had just been assigned to Night Tiger Reconnaissance Company and nearly annihilated them; that strength was impressive.
Maybe Night Tiger Reconnaissance Company could reach a higher level under him.
“What do you like?”
A crisp female voice came from behind Chang Ning. Hearing this voice, Chang Ning clearly felt his heartbeat slow by half a beat, and he inexplicably felt nervous.
“Nothing, a familiar acquaintance just passed by; I like his style.”
Chang Ning hurriedly explained, but he noticed Xiao Fei’s expression growing darker the more he explained.
In his panic, he quickly came up with: “He’s the new company commander from my and Xiao Zhuang’s old unit; he performed brilliantly in the exercise.”
At these words, Xiao Fei’s complexion visibly returned to rosy.
But the way she looked at Chang Ning was odd, like she was trying hard not to laugh.
“So you actually like a man?”
“That’s not what I meant!”
Oh no! If he couldn’t explain clearly today, his lifetime reputation would be ruined.
Watching Chang Ning flailing around trying to explain something, but failing to make it clear.
The more flustered he got, the less clear his explanations; it felt like Chang Ning was about to shatter.
“I’m joking, silly!”
At this moment, Xiao Fei found Chang Ning adorably foolish.
With that, Xiao Fei turned her gaze to the group of soldiers watching the fun behind Chang Ning.
Seeing this, how could Chang Ning not know she was giving him a way out, so he quickly introduced everyone.
Who knew Ostrich would start acting up again: “Hello, I’m Deng Zhenhua, Chang Ning’s comrade. May I ask if you have a partner?”
Everyone was speechless at Ostrich; he was too socially bold— who asks about someone’s private life right after meeting?
“Hello, I’m single.”
While speaking, Xiao Fei deliberately glanced at Chang Ning; the hint was quite obvious.
“Cough, single is good, single is free.”
Those present might not be masterminds, but they could read the room.
Seeing this, Ostrich knew he had no chance and didn’t say the rest.
Actually, Xiao Fei didn’t know why she was so bold; she had spotted Chang Ning in the inpatient department lobby early on and couldn’t resist approaching him.
“Let’s go, I’ll take you to visit Xiao Zhuang.
Strictly speaking, he’s not supposed to receive outside visitors right now, but who can resist his good brothers.”
Who this “he” specifically referred to, only Xiao Fei knew in her heart.
It was that familiar elevator again, and the girl by his side hadn’t changed.
With more people, their distance was even closer than last time.
Chang Ning felt like he could hear her breathing.
In places the two couldn’t see, the others from Lone Wolf B Squad were frequently exchanging glances.
It was their high tacit understanding; to outsiders, it would just cause eye strain with no info gained.
After a bit, they finished passing info and showed sly grins; clearly, these people besides Chang Ning and Xiao Fei had reached some agreement.
Then everyone let out an “ouch” and toppled backward in unison, as if the elevator had shaken violently.
With the space compressed, Chang Ning instinctively pulled Xiao Fei into his arms, his arms braced against the elevator wall forming a small space enclosing her.
Their eyes met, and time seemed to stop flowing in that moment.
The rest of B Squad had already stood up and moved as far as possible from the two immersed in their own world.
Their faces were full of knowing smiles, quietly watching Chang Ning and Xiao Fei.
