Chapter 1: Human Face Outside The Window
Dachang City,
Third High School.
“Hey, have you guys heard? The high school next door is haunted!”
“Ah, really? Don’t scare me like that.”
During the break in evening self-study, Jiang Shan, who was lying on the table sleeping, was startled awake by the scream of a female classmate.
“It’s true! My aunt said dozens of people have already died! That school has been under blockade for two days!”
“Ah, don’t say anymore, I’m scared.”
“Scared? Then tonight I’ll walk you home. Our homes are on the way anyway.”
Jiang Shan, who had been curious at first, instantly lost interest upon hearing the last sentence.
Telling ghost stories to walk a girl home—this routine he hadn’t used in five years.
“What way are you on, Li Nan? Your home is North of the City, Wang Yuanyuan’s home is South City. Is it fun to make up a story to scare her?”
“Lu Tao, if you don’t speak, no one will take you for a mute. Are you showing off?”
The small group that had been chatting amiably together instantly started arguing.
Jiang Shan had no interest in watching them argue. He was more concerned about when class would end, so he lowered his head and glanced at his watch:
“20:50”
“Sigh, this school really doesn’t treat students like people. All classes have intermittent makeup lessons, and they go until ten o’clock.”
“Back then, the black buddies in America slept better than me.”
After venting, the bored Jiang Shan looked out the window.
The gray misty fog blocked his view. The lights on the school road vaguely appeared in the fog. The gray-black mist seemed to devour everything outside the window, making it indistinct.
“PM2.5 off the charts?”
The scene outside the window made Jiang Shan’s mood somewhat oppressive, plus the “ghost” that Li Nan had mentioned earlier.
Jiang Shan couldn’t help but recall what a strange person had said during a “safety education class” in the classroom the evening before last:
1. Ghosts cannot be killed
2. Only ghosts can deal with ghosts
3. Discern the pattern of ghosts.
He also said a bunch of weird things about ghosts.
Even if what that person said was true, in this day and age, no one would believe in the existence of ghosts.
Although Jiang Shan always had a sense of familiarity in his mind, he only thought he had seen similar rule-based horror stories in some novel before.
So not only did the classmates in the class continue doing what they were doing, treating it as a ghost story, he was no exception:
“Nonsense, where do ghosts come from in this world?”
“Even if there really are ghosts, all fear comes from insufficient firepower.”
That said, thinking of the strange person’s eerie gaze, Jiang Shan still felt a chill in his heart.
He shook his head, wanting to put those words about ghosts behind him.
It was the 21st century; this kind of rule-based horror story might scare elementary school kids, but he wouldn’t believe it.
“Zzz.”
Suddenly, the lights in the classroom dimmed, then became bright again in an instant.
“!”
In that moment when the lights dimmed.
Unintentionally, Jiang Shan saw a human face dark shadow outside the front desk’s window. His eyes widened instantly, and his whole body tensed up.
Looking closely, an extremely rotten, pale, blood-seeping human face was stuck tightly to the glass. The deathly still, cold gaze without a trace of human emotion was staring fixedly at his front desk!
Jiang Shan suddenly felt his scalp go numb, and with a glance from the corner of his eye.
He discovered that outside the window beside him, there was also a human face looking at him!
A chill surged from the soles of his feet through his whole body. Extreme fear made Jiang Shan’s heart race uncontrollably. He clenched his teeth to keep from crying out.
“What the hell is this thing!”
Jiang Shan cursed inwardly. Scared to the point his nails dug into his flesh, his face deathly pale, he suddenly stood up. Due to his body stiffening from fear, he overturned the table and chair to the ground.
“Clang!”
The sudden noise instantly quieted the noisy classroom. All the classmates turned to look at him in unison.
“Jiang Shan, what’s wrong with you? Sit down quick, the homeroom teacher will be back soon.” His female deskmate Chen Yue kindly reminded him.
But Jiang Shan acted as if he hadn’t heard. His terrified gaze was fixed on the window outside.
“Hahaha, Jiang Shan, did you see a ghost? Look how scared you are.”
“There’s nothing outside the window, right?”
Lu Tao, startled, looked in the direction of Jiang Shan’s gaze with an unhappy face. Besides the gray misty fog, he saw nothing.
“How could it be…”
Before Jiang Shan could finish his words, an angry voice came from the doorway:
“I could hear our class being the loudest from the office in the corridor!”
“Jiang Shan! What are you standing up for? Can’t you see the whole class is studying? If you don’t want to study, don’t disturb the classmates who do!”
At this moment, the homeroom teacher walked in from the front door. From his expression, it was clear he was very angry.
Seeing the homeroom teacher about to explode, Chen Yue tugged at Jiang Shan’s clothes and pulled him to sit down.
Sitting in the chair, Jiang Shan said nothing. His whole body was soaked in cold sweat, and his legs wouldn’t obey him.
He was sure he hadn’t seen wrong. Outside the window was definitely a dead person’s face!
But why did that human face suddenly disappear?
Could he really have seen wrong?
Jiang Shan’s face was ashen. He kept taking deep breaths to stay as calm as possible.
“Bang!”
“Li Nan, take a look at yourself. What the hell did you write? Ghost characters?!”
The sound of a book slamming on the podium startled Jiang Shan. He looked up toward the podium following the sound.
The homeroom teacher continued angrily:
“With this grade, if you can read it, read it. If not, get the hell home.”
The whiteboard with the screen on displayed Li Nan’s homework:
Twisted black lines and blood-like red lines formed bizarre characters,
The blood-red and pitch-black colors on the white draft paper looked as terrifying as brain matter.
An 800-word essay had been turned into a horror-style art piece.
Many classmates held back laughter, glancing sideways at Li Nan with his head down.
Jiang Shan also didn’t understand. Although Li Nan was poor at studies, he wasn’t stupid enough to slack off so blatantly.
Mixing in is the key to slacking off.
What Li Nan did was like lighting a lamp in the toilet—asking for death.
Jiang Shan glanced over, his brows furrowed tightly.
For some reason, the first time he saw those “ghost characters,” he felt a strong discomfort in his heart, and an uncontrollable chill from deep inside.
Seeing Li Nan silent, the homeroom teacher’s anger grew:
“Get out and stand until school is over. Have the essay ready by six tomorrow morning, or go home to your mom!”
Hearing the homeroom teacher’s words, Li Nan’s face darkened. Without a word, he hugged his books and walked out of the classroom.
……
21:30
“Scratch… scratch…”
A piercing sound suddenly came from outside the quiet classroom.
Like dry chalk scraping on a rough blackboard, it made people feel disgusted and irritated from the heart.
A classmate couldn’t help muttering softly: “So annoying.”
Jiang Shan also heard the disgusting sound and couldn’t help frowning.
“What is Li Nan doing this time?”
The homeroom teacher on the podium said angrily: “I think he doesn’t want to continue this semester!”
The sound came from outside the classroom, and there was only Li Nan outside the classroom.
Without thinking, the homeroom teacher immediately stood up, opened the front door, and walked out with an annoyed face.
His aggressive demeanor meant Li Nan was in for it.
Shortly after the homeroom teacher went out, the scratching sound stopped.
“Why is it so quiet?”
Jiang Shan perked up his ears but heard no sound from outside the classroom.
Eerily calm…
Even if the homeroom teacher didn’t hit him, he’d at least say something. How could he be silent?
Jiang Shan sensed something wrong. He had just stood up when he froze in place because that piercing sound rang out again!
“Scratch… scratch…”
“Scratch… scratch.”
The oppressive, noisy writing sound continued at its original rhythm, seemingly unaffected.
!
The sudden sound filled Jiang Shan with chill instantly. Some in the class also realized something was wrong.
A girl sitting in the front row near the door said tremblingly:
“Didn’t the homeroom teacher go out? Why is this sound still going…”
