Chapter 147: Give The Deceased A Bit Of Respect
“We are police.”
A commotion suddenly arose downstairs.
“We received a report that an illegal underage abortion surgery is being performed here. Please cooperate with the inspection.”
The voice approached the stairs in an instant, with the sound of a nurse hastily obstructing, “Sorry, our hospital only has one abortion surgery today. The patient is a twenty-two-year-old Asian adult woman, thirteen weeks pregnant, which fully meets the standard of the law.”
“Do you have the relevant statement?”
“Yes, downstairs. Please, everyone—”
“We’ll wait here.”
The footsteps stopped at the corner of the stairs.
Liancheng’s eyes suddenly opened. Facing death, her limbs spasmed violently, and she couldn’t suppress the trembling at all.
The string in her chest cavity, tensed to the breaking point, finally relaxed.
At this time, someone reported it; the timing was too coincidental and timely. Whether it was the gang or Liang Chaosu’s bodyguards delaying, it struck the lifeline of Liang Father’s group.
She never signed any statement after arriving at the hospital, nor did she have any pre-operative checks. As long as the police inspected thoroughly, even if she wasn’t underage, the procedure would be illegal.
Just as hope began to extend, a voice came from her side.
“Anesthesia is ready.”
In Liancheng’s line of sight, a doctor appeared, wearing a blue sterile mask and hood. His expression was hidden, only his eyes, exposed, were calm and composed. In his hand was an anesthesia mask, which he then covered over her mouth and nose.
“Take a deep breath, and count with me, one, two—”
Liancheng found it unbelievable.
This group was still preparing for the surgery. Were they not afraid of the missing statement being discovered by the police, or did they want to finish the surgery before the nurse could delay them?
She wanted to struggle and shout, but as soon as she moved a fraction, something hard was pressed against her head. The man who had been standing by the bedside appeared above her silently.
Liancheng realized what the hard object was and froze instantly.
The next moment, she felt her legs being lifted and fixed in stirrups on either side. A sharp light erupted from the overhead surgical light, blinding her, and she closed her eyes.
At the same time, the footsteps on the stairs approached again, “The statement is legal and compliant, but due to our duty, we must personally inspect it.”
Liancheng was suddenly plunged into a tearing sensation of powerlessness, numbness, and hope, as if she were in an abyss.
The statement being legal and compliant meant that Liang Father had prepared thoroughly in advance, but the police still had to go upstairs to inspect, meaning she still had a chance to be saved.
But with a gun muzzle at her head and the general anesthesia mask over her mouth and nose, even if she held her breath and closed her eyes, how long could she resist?
The dose of general anesthesia was so large that she would be unaware after just a couple of breaths. Moreover, if she held her breath for too long, the doctor would eventually notice something was wrong.
A drop of ice-cold liquid slid from the corner of Liancheng’s eye into her hair.
The footsteps approached the doorway.
The anesthesiologist, with a tense face, exhaled, “She’s down. The anesthesia has taken effect.”
The gun muzzle at Liancheng’s head retracted, and the nurse pointed to the inner room, “You can hide there.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the operating room door was knocked on. Due to sterile requirements, the police could not enter the operating room and were guided by the nurse to the adjacent surgical observation area.
This room was generally used for surgical teaching, and from the window, all operations on the operating table could be clearly seen. On the wall next to it, a closed-circuit television displayed the live broadcast of the surgery.
The nurse used the wireless loudspeaker to notify the female doctor, “Dr. Jones, there’s a temporary report of a procedural violation. Would you be so kind as to show our police officer the patient’s face?”
The female doctor stopped her work, gestured for the instrument nurse to move aside, revealing Liancheng’s ghastly white face. Her eyes were tightly closed, her expression showing the relaxed state after anesthesia. Her oval face, with bright features, possessed a softness unique to Asians.
The police did not leave immediately.
After comparing it with the file in their hands and carefully examining it for another three to four minutes, they confirmed it was the correct person and then withdrew from the operating room.
After their footsteps faded away, the man reappeared near the operating table without a sound.
Liancheng was completely covered by a sterile sheet. On a trolley next to the operating table, a plate held a bloody and mutilated mass.
The man’s gaze shifted. Blood splattered on the latter half of the operating table, with a bleeding amount that was completely lethal.
He was not at ease, “Lift it, I need to check.”
The nurse lifted Liancheng’s upper body, “Her lower body is naked. Give the deceased some respect.”
The man walked forward, first checking for breath, then the carotid artery. Breath could be faked, but the carotid artery, as long as the heart was beating, could not be concealed.
After a long while.
The man’s hand moved down, about to press on her chest.
The radio on his waist vibrated.
Crackling static, “The police found us and are questioning Red K. That group the same as us didn’t get held up. They’ll be here in five minutes. If they run into the police and discover that woman is already dead, they’ll definitely retaliate and drag us down with them. We must escape immediately.”
The man withdrew his hand, “As agreed, the corpse will be stored in the hospital’s cold storage.”
The female doctor nodded dumbly.
He strode out of the operating room.
……………………
Old Ghost was rescued by a passing vehicle.
When Old Ford crossed the line earlier, the first point of impact was the front of his side of the car, affecting the driver’s seat.
The car door was deformed, and the glass shattered.
Shards of glass splashed onto Old Ghost’s profile, scratching several wounds. One of the deepest ones cut open the corner of his eye, but fortunately, it didn’t injure his eyeball.
The middle-aged couple who rescued him were shocked by the extent to which his flesh was rolled back from the wound, exclaiming “OMG, OMG” all the way.
Regardless, they had to take him to the hospital.
Old Ghost didn’t care. He worked with people and superficial injuries were minor problems. Broken ribs piercing his lungs, that would be something to exclaim “OMG” about.
He was worried about Liancheng.
His mobile phone had been thrown somewhere unknown during the car accident. He borrowed the middle-aged couple’s phone and called a friend.
“It’s me, Old Ghost. What’s going on with you guys? Didn’t you say the two groups would hold each other back, and we’d still have people watching? Who is this new group that popped out of nowhere? They almost killed me and took Liancheng away.”
“The Boss notified us. It’s your old enemy from home who temporarily reinforced their numbers.”
Old Ghost’s heart sank. “What about Liancheng?”
“…”
The friend’s breathing became heavy. “It was originally planned to deliberately expose ourselves in Reykjavik, get caught by Old’s people, arrive at the hospital in the afternoon, arrange for people to smash the place and stir up trouble, to prevent those people from entering the operating room. But the timing was brought forward, and we—”
Old Ghost roared, “You’re just abandoning her?”
“We’re not. We called to report the hospital for illegal abortion. The police in blue hats immediately responded.”
That group was quite famous internationally, so even if the police couldn’t connect them right away.
However, a dozen burly muscular men appearing in groups, in a sparsely populated place like Iceland, was bound to attract attention. The police would inevitably pay some attention.
Checking their identification documents would be enough to hold them up.
Old Ghost breathed a sigh of relief. “So, what now? Is everything going smoothly afterward? Those bastards who deal in big business like to check people’s carotid arteries. That piece of leather we prepared took a lot of effort, it will definitely fool them.”
The friend’s breathing grew heavier, rising and falling in the earpiece, making Old Ghost extremely uneasy.
“Say something, did it fool them? Even if it didn’t, we faked death, didn’t we? It shouldn’t have ended up looking like we’re really dead.”
