Chapter 244:
“Why don’t you ask a different question? I’ll tell you everything I know! Hehehe~”
Second Squad Leader laughed, but it was an ugly laugh.
It was clearly not a genuine smile; it looked more like someone was holding a knife to his throat.
Perhaps repulsed by this ugly smile, Lao Pao’s expression became even more twisted.
Lao Pao: Very good, that laugh looks great. Don’t laugh next time!
He silently repeated to himself a few times that this was a comrade, not an enemy, and Lao Pao barely suppressed the evil urge to smash Second Squad Leader’s smiling face with one punch.
But if Second Squad Leader kept provoking him, it was hard to guarantee no accidents would happen.
“Alright then, let’s change the question.”
Lao Pao didn’t insist and smoothly switched to a different question.
Now it was Second Squad Leader’s turn to not know how to respond. He had mentally prepared himself for a beating, but Lao Pao didn’t play by the rules.
Didn’t even Zhuang Yan from the same squad get thrown off by Lao Pao’s feint? The lingering surprise on his face was the evidence.
“You ask.”
Second Squad Leader was curious what question Lao Pao would ask him. He decided in his mind that as long as it wasn’t about Blue Team matters, he could selectively reveal a bit.
Thinking of this, Second Squad Leader suddenly felt himself becoming noble. These hardships were all endured for Blue Team.
But he didn’t plan to say it out loud; that would be promoting a fine style. However, Xiao Zhang, this new recruit, could let a little slip.
Sigh, plan successful!
“Where did this rope come from?” Lao Pao asked.
Well, this question might not seem high-level, but it did have some effect.
Because the rope tied around Second Squad Leader was Wolf Fang equipment. Not that Wolf Fang equipment differed from Reconnaissance Company gear. Actually, aside from some special equipment, basic items like ropes and engineer shovels were no different between Wolf Fang and other units.
The reason Lao Pao asked was that he noticed the unusual way the rope was knotted.
There are countless ways to tie knots, and Wolf Fang, especially Lone Wolf Special Assault Team, had particularly high freedom in certain aspects, so small details were filled with strong personal styles.
For example, the knot Lao Pao saw looked like Dog Head Old Gao’s handiwork from the technique. To be safe, Lao Pao decided to ask Second Squad Leader.
If the other party had really seen Dog Head Old Gao, didn’t that mean A Group still had combat power?
Or he and Xiao Zhuang could follow Dog Head Old Gao’s trail to find A Group. They couldn’t just focus solely on breaking out, right?
Doing something within their power along the way would count as contributing to Red Team, not to mention they might run into A Group members.
He didn’t know how many people were left in A Group after the previous bombardment. Everyone belonged to Lone Wolf Special Assault Team; saving as many as possible was key.
After breaking out, there was still a long way to Red Team’s position. Relying on just him and Xiao Zhuang to infiltrate back during this critical decisive battle period would likely evade Blue Team’s intensive searches.
So encountering comrades on the road would be the best result; if not, they had to make every effort to rescue them.
The second half of the journey required everyone’s cooperation; the more people, the higher the survival probability.
Asking about the rope was just the opening; his next question would steer toward Wolf Fang.
Once he opened this door, Second Brother wouldn’t hold back.
Lao Pao’s mind was calculating loudly.
Glancing at the rope on his body that didn’t belong to Blue Team, Second Squad Leader wasn’t sure if Lao Pao had discovered something.
But he couldn’t guess Lao Pao’s purpose. News about the rope’s owner? That seemed the most valuable possibility.
Unable to guess Lao Pao’s intent, Second Squad Leader decided not to admit it first and see how Lao Pao played his hand. He would counter move by move.
“Rope? You mean this one on me?” Second Squad Leader asked.
“Don’t play dumb with me! Besides you and that private, where else are there ropes? Who else can I ask?”
Lao Pao saw that Second Squad Leader wasn’t being honest and was stalling by playing dumb, so he casually slapped Second Squad Leader’s big head twice.
These solid slaps held nothing back, making Second Squad Leader grimace in pain.
“Fuck, you really don’t care about our old friendship at all. You hit too hard!”
Suddenly attacked, Second Squad Leader yelled that he wouldn’t give Lao Pao any intelligence.
In the end, under the threat of Lao Pao’s death glare, he surrendered. Mainly because Lao Pao’s right hand had silently lifted again at some point.
As the saying goes, those who understand the times are heroes. Second Squad Leader felt he was a man who could bend and stretch; getting hung up on this minor issue would make him seem petty.
So the magnanimous Second Squad Leader decided to overlook Lao Pao’s rude behavior toward him.
“You mean this rope? Of course it’s mine. That person tied me up and left.”
After a few slaps, Second Squad Leader seemed much more honest. Of course, if Lao Pao hadn’t seen Second Brother’s shifty rolling eyes, he might have actually believed him.
Actually, Lao Pao had misunderstood Second Squad Leader this time. He was telling the truth, just fuzzing over key details.
“Which direction did he go?” Lao Pao continued asking.
“Can’t say. If I say more, I’d be a traitor.”
Second Squad Leader’s attitude was firm.
He could take a beating, but being a traitor was out of the question.
Being a traitor meant being nailed to the pillar of shame; he had a face to save.
“That’s too serious, Second Brother.
Traitor or not, we’re all Huaxia soldiers. I’m not from another country.”
Seeing Second Squad Leader struggling on the ground, Lao Pao kindly helped him up to lean against the tree trunk, even thoughtfully patting the dust off his body.
But Second Squad Leader wouldn’t buy it. He closed his eyes, clearly refusing to cooperate.
What now? He couldn’t really pin him down and beat him senseless.
They were all good comrades; actually beating him wouldn’t help unity, right?
“Don’t force me!”
Seeing he couldn’t break Second Squad Leader, Lao Pao switched strategies, pretending he would act if there was no cooperation.
“Go ahead and try!” Second Squad Leader sneered.
He had figured it out: Lao Pao wouldn’t really torture him. No fear then; it was all about being tough.
Fuck!
Lao Pao was pissed off by Second Squad Leader. This was just an exercise; he couldn’t even use half his skills.
If it were actual combat, Second Brother wouldn’t have a chance to talk. One set of moves and he’d be obedient—would he still be this tough?
“Squad Leader’s not right, be careful!”
Xiao Zhuang sensed something. He quickly shrank behind the tree trunk, exposing his gun muzzle and vigilantly watching the surroundings.
“What’s the situation?”
Hearing Xiao Zhuang’s alert, Lao Pao ignored Second Squad Leader, rolled, and vanished into the grass.
In the darkness, Lao Pao seemed to disappear suddenly. Actually, he hadn’t left the scene; he had just used superb concealment techniques to go stealth.
